WHEELERSBURG, OH-The Southern Ohio Speedway has made several changes to it’s 2016 racing program. All of these changes go with the tracks plan to build a strong weekly racing program. After having bi-weekly racing the past couple of seasons, the track is returning to a full weekly schedule for the 2016 season.

The first changes come with the sanctioning for the Late Model and Modified classes. The track has signed with the American Motor Racing Association (AMRA) in 2016 for the Late Model and Modified classes. Being AMRA sanctioned will allow our Late Model drivers to be eligible for a $10,000 total AMRA Late Model points fund and our Modified drivers to be eligible for a $30,000 total AMRA Modified points fund. After much evaluation, the track feels like that the AMRA offers our local drivers the best opportunity to earn good points fund money at the end of the season.

The AMRA requires each driver in the Late Model and Modified class to purchase a membership. Memberships are $75 for one year, or drivers can purchase a temporary membership for $25, which is good for one night of racing. After a driver purchases three temporary memberships, they automatically become a full member. The membership is good for the entire season at all AMRA sanctioned tracks. Late Model drivers will see no change in their rules package from previous seasons and Modifieds will see minor rules changes, with the main change being allowing Hoosier M-100 and M-200 tires and spoilers are allowed. You can view the 2016 AMRA rules at www.amramodified.com.

In addition to the AMRA Late Model, AMRA Modified, Sport Mod, and Enduro classes, the weekly racing program at SOS in 2016 will see the addition of the Fastrak Crate Late Models as a weekly class. Crate Late Model racing has exploded across the country as it offers an affordable rules package. SOS started the Sport Mod class in the area and will follow the same plan for getting the Fastrak Crate Late Models built up. SOS is committed long term to building the Fastrak Crate Late Models. The track understands that it will take time to build car counts up and will stay committed to the class, the same as with the Sport Mods.

The Fastrak Crate Late Models will be running under a car count based purse until the class gets built up. In the coming week the track will be building a page on our website that will be an information hub for the Fastrak Crate Late Model class. The page will have everything somebody needs to know about getting into the Fastrak Crate Late Model class.

SOS has also made changes to the Sport Mod rules. The Sport Mods will be going back to the original rules package that was ran before the last race of 2015. The 2016 SOS Sport Mod rules package will match the Portsmouth Raceway Park Sport Mod rules package.

SOS is committed to bringing a strong weekly racing program back in 2016. The track has put together a package for our weekly racing programs that make them viable for the speedway and rewards race teams with higher purses for higher car counts. The complete payouts can be found HERE. Some highlights of the purses is Late Models will be $1,500 to win, $175 to start despite the car count. The Modified payout can range anywhere from $600-$700 to win and always $100 to start. The Sport Mod payout can range anywhere from $300-$400 to win and always $40 to start. The weekly Enduro class will pay $250 to win and the Fastrak Crate Late Model payout will be based on car count and is in the process of being constructed.

On track action will start this spring on Saturday, March 19th with Test N’ Tune #1. Opening Night is set for Friday, April 1st with AMRA Late Models, AMRA Modifieds, Fastrak Crate Late Models, Sport Mods, and Enduro. A tentative 2016 schedule is posted HERE. One note about the schedule is we do plan on adding some special events, but they are all still in the works so are not posted on the schedule yet. They will be added as the winter goes on.
