On a cool and cloudy Saturday night at Wayne County Speedway, Randolph’s Jim Nicely decided to try the Harriger Towing Rush Late Model class out and in his first attempt, went flag to flag to win the 20 lap feature. Standing fifth in the Lias Tire Super Late Model class, Nicely swapped out engines in his Sarchione Chevy, Tires and More and B-Nice Racing #72, and would grab the lead at the drop of the green flag from Josh Double who would challenge Nicely several times and made a couple of slide jobs that came up short to try and take the lead. Meanwhile, Jamie Wrightsman and points leader Charlie Duncan had a fender to fender battle for third going on right behind the two front runners. With two laps to go, Double would make a move on Nicely in turn one and hit a wet spot on the track and as he slowed to gather himself, Duncan powered past for second but could not chase down Nicely. Double would hang on to third in front of Wrightsman as Justin Chance filled out the top five. Heat winners were Wrightsman and Duncan.
Gary Hensel Jr. took early control of the Aamco Transmission Super Stock feature from his starting outside pole position as Wooster’s Nick Smith would claim the lead on lap three. On the next lap, the red flag would wave as Tyler Nicely and Cliff Staley with making contact going down the back stretch with Nicely barrel-rolling into the turn three guardrail. He would shakily walk away from the wreck. As the race resumed, Chase Alexander and Tyler Thompson would motor past Hensel Jr for second and third on lap seven. As heat winners Alexander and Thompson waged a heated battle for second, that would allow points leader Smith and his Hillcrest Trucking, Butcher Block & Deli and Fire & Ice Pub #11 to expand his lead and score his second win of the season. Alexander finished second with Thompson, Hensel Jr. and Staley following.
With a light mist of rain falling for most of the Super Stock feature, the rain intensified and made the racing surface to slick for the WQKT Mini Stock feature and they will run make up their feature next Saturday night. Brad and Gary Hensel Jr. won the heat races. All drivers were once again competing for Contingency Connection prizes of nearly $100,000 for the season.
Earlier in the evening, Coshocton’s Braxton Wilson swept the Mini Wedge’s as he won the heat race and led all the way in the feature driving the Coshocton Trucking #28. Points leader Billy Dawson finished second with Donnie Danley, Brooklyn Wilson and Reece Bollinger rounding out the top five.
Scott Delaney led the last 17 laps to win his second Flat Track Kart feature with Jamie Johnson coming in second. Chuck Conway finished third. Johnson and Steve Reed won the heats.
A big Fourth of July night of racing is planned at Wayne County Speedway next Saturday as the Renegade of Dirt Modifieds roll in for their Stars and Stripes 30 paying $3,000 to the winner. The Sweeney Rush Late Model Touring Series will be back for the second time this season along with the Fisher Performance Sprints, Aamco Transmission Super Stocks, WQKT Mini Stocks and thje Wedges and Flat Track Karts.
