Reed Claims FAST Title With Win At Fremont
7 min readBy Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio – Byron Reed has put together THE best season of his 26+ years of 410 sprint car racing. He dominated the 30-lap feature at Fremont Speedway Friday to score his 9th win of 2016 to wrap up his fourth Kistler Racing Products FAST Championship Series presented by KS Sales and Service title.
For Monclova , Ohio ’s Reed, the victory was the 32nd of his career at Fremont Speedway and ties him with Shawn Valenti and hall of famer Wally Heminger for 13th on the track’s all-time win list. The $5,000 victory on All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads Night to kick off the 9th Annual Jim Ford Classic weekend also meant Reed would take the $10,000 FAST title.
“It wasn’t that good until we got it freed up to where I could maneuver a little bit. I was terrible in the heat race. I won nine races and this probably was my least favorite win because I started on the front…I really don’t feel like I totally earned it. Of all the different championships we have won I feel like we had a great year. Nothing was close and no one was really challenging us. It was a great win. I have to thank Crown Battery, Ken Gill Construction, Kistler Engines…this motor had All Pro heads on it…and my crew, Kurt, Kevin, Dick, my mom and dad, my wife and kids for putting up with all of this,” said Reed in the Engine Pro Victory Lane.
Fremont’s John Ivy has struggled in 2016. The former multi-time track champion got some help from a former crew chief and it paid off as he survived several restarts to claim his second win of the year in the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 sprints to the tune of $2,000. It was Ivy’s 52nd career win at Fremont as he sits sixth on the track’s all-time win list.
“We’ve had a bad string here. Joey and my brother have been busting their butts and we finally got to start up front. We had Guy Myers come back and give us a hand and keep us in line and apparently it worked out. This thing was good. I have to thank the Sipes family..they put us a good race car together,” said Ivy beside his Adkins Group; S&S Racing; OC Detailing; Gressman Power Sports; Kistler Racing Products; Sonny’s Machine & Welding; CA Kustoms; Johnson’s Hunting and Fishing; Tiffany’s Furniture; Keller Hardware; Sipes Oceola Garage; MRE; L&R Farms; Rohr Total Lawncare; Mr. Appliance backed machine.
Fremont, Ohio’s Paul Weaver finished second and earned his first JLH General Contractor FAST 305 Sprint Series presented by Engine Pro championship.
“This is pretty neat to win the FAST deal and Attica and almost got Fremont championship too. It’s been a pretty good year,” said Weaver.
Dustin Sautter won the McCullough Industries 602 Late Model feature, but when he failed to go to the scales after the event, he was disqualified and the win went to Tim Sabo. For Sabo, it was his first win of the year and the 27th of his career tying him with his brother, Steve, for 17th on the track’s all time win list. Wayne , Ohio ’s John Brooks got a last lap pass to secure his first ever Fremont Speedway track championship in the division.
“I was pretty angry after Miller dumped me over there. So I was kind of doing some things I shouldn’t have been. I have to thank Rusty Schlenk Race Cars…he helped me a lot with setting this up. Chris Watson…he works tirelessly for no pay. My friends are all here from out of town. I have to thank my wife,” said Brooks.
In the 30 lap Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 sprints, Reed and Todd Heller brought the field to green with Reed gaining the advantage. After a lap was completed Duane Zablocki flipped and on the restart Bryan Nuckles spun. When the green reappeared Reed pulled away as DJ Foos pulled into second and a lap later Carson Macedo took third. Reed steadily pulled away as Foos and Macedo battled for second with Brock Martin and Travis Philo staying close.
With nine laps in Stuart Brubaker would spin followed by Brandon Matus tangling with another machine. Each time the caution flew it wiped out an over two second lead for Reed. On lap 10 Martin drove from fourth to second. Chris Andrews took a tumble on lap 12 with Reed leading Martin, Foos, Macedo, Philo and Cole Duncan. Reed built a big lead again when the green flew and raced into lapped traffic by the 19th circuit.
Philo spun battling for fourth on lap 21, again wiping out a big lead for Reed. Reed would get a fantastic restart and drove away for the win over Martin, Macedo, who took third on the last lap, Foos and Duncan.
In the 25 lap 305 feature, Jason Keckler and Dustin Rall brought the field to green but Brandon Moore would stop before a lap could be recorded. On the restart Keckler would gain the advantage over fourth starting Ivy with Weaver, Steve Rando and Rall in tow. After Cody Bova spun on lap four, Ivy would challenge Keckler on the restart before another yellow for Dan Henning on lap five. With eight laps in Alvin Roepke and Chris Andrews would spin just after Ivy took the lead over Keckler and Weaver.
A spat of yellow flags and crashes involving Kyle Peters and Landon LaLonde and another with Seth Schneider would keep the flow of the race in check. When the green flew again on lap nine, Ivy led, Keckler, Weaver, Nate Dussel, Dan McCarron and Matt Foos. Ivy would pull away slightly as Weaver pressured Keckler for second. The leaders found lapped traffic again with three laps to go as Ivy led Keckler, Weaver, Dussel and Foos.
Weaver would finally take second on lap 24 but ran out of time to catch Ivy. Dussel scored third with Foos and Keckler rounding out the top five.
In the crash filled 15 lap 602 late model feature, Brooks jumped out to the early lead over Jamie Miller, Sautter and Dustin Keegan. Following a spat of cautions, Miller drove into the lead on lap three with Sautter, Tim Sabo and Louis Alan in tow. Tim Sabo jumped into second on lap nine. Sautter would get great restarts over the next handful of laps with Tim Sabo taking second on lap nine. As Sautter drove away, Sabo and Miller battled hard for second.
Sautter held onto the win, but failed to go to the scales after the victory lane celebration, thus handing the win to Tim Sabo. Miller, Steve Sabo, Brooks and Jay King rounding out the top five.
Fremont Speedway will wrap up the 9th Annual Jim Ford Classic on Saturday, Sept. 17 (rain date of Sunday, Sept. 18). For more information go to www.fremontohspeedway.com
