Weir, Hesson, Sawmiller And Liams Win At Waynesfield

10 min read

Clear blue skies was a welcoming sight at Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio after mother nature toyed with the 1/3rd mile in previous weeks. Coming off the Jack Hewitt classic, non wing drivers were presented with yet another opportunity to take bragging race and show the traveling boys whose track it truly is. Jack Hewitt was once again on hand with his two-seat sprint car giving race fans the ride of their life trailing the A-main field in the opening laps. With the super moon overhead, racing under the lights seemed to be extra exciting on Richmond Gear night at the races.

The premiere event of the night featured a showdown between the local Buckeye Machine Non Wing sprints and the invading competitors of the Lane Automotive MTS sprints from Michigan. Top runners in the MTS traveling series were on hand for their chance to take the Waynesfield trophy and Richmond Gear prize pack back with them north. Thirty seven cars eventually signed in for the state rivalry with only twenty scheduled to take the green flag. The night started on a rough note when the 1H of Kevin Hawk tumbled end over end down the backstretch during warmups. Hawk was removed from the vehicle alert and talking with safety personnel. For his safety, Hawk was transported by ground to the hospital for a further evaluation. At the time of this release, no further information is known. All updates on his condition will be made available on the WRP website. Track management ask for everyone to send prayers to Hawk and his family during this difficult time.

In B-main action, Tyler Hewitt and Adam Cruea came away with transfer spots in the first B-main. Luke Hall and Mike Miller were able to do the same in the second B-main determining the starting field for the 25 lap Ohio vs Michigan feature. The 12 of Kent Wolters and the 23S of Kyle Simon led the field to the green flag with Scott Weir and Joss Moffatt looking on from row two. At the drop of the green flag, cars began to scatter all over the racing surface showing fans how exciting the race would be early on in the event. Kyle Simon led the opening lap with Wolters, Weir, and Moffatt closely behind. Those drivers got so close taking the field three wide out of turn four for the lead. The battle for the lead continued into turn one with no one letting the lead get away from them. Moffatt had his taste of the lead following the three way scuffle. Moffat lead the field until the yellow flew with just three laps in the books for the 53 of Steve Little. Little’s car came to stop on the top side of turn two prompting the caution. On the restart, the top four once again took the battle for the lead seriously and formed another cluster of cars all going for the lead. This run would not be as excited as the battle remained two wide. Cars came to a screeching halt near the halfway point with the 69R of Adam Cruea, who raced his way in through the B-main, flipped down the front stretch. Cruea climbed out from behind the wheel under his own power and walked back to the pits. During the cleanup, Tyler Hewitt elected to head to the hot pit to make repairs. He rejoined the rear of the field on the restart. With laps winding down, Scotty Weir made his run for the lead. Lap 21 was the money lap for Weir as Moffatt got caught up with lap traffic on the cushion. Weir put the 18S on the bottom sliding right by the 5J claiming the lead. Scotty Weir would go on to take the win. Moffatt finished in second with Mike Dunlap finishing third after making a late race run. The magic man Mike Miller picked up the hard charger award advancing double digits in the A-main.

The Indian Lake Outfitter Compacts hit the track for their 15 lap feature. Justin Durflinger was scheduled to start on the pole when his car was called in as a scratch to race control. With Durflinger a no-go for the start, Jeff Zwiebel moved up to start with the 518 of Jordan Iiams. As the green waved, Iiams took off like a veteran wheel man leading the opening lap. Lucas Fuller overtook Zwiebel for the second spot early on before the Yoder squad began to move in. Kolton Waughtel threw his 71 into the mix battling with almost everyone on the racing surface. Harvey Yoder began to challenge his brother David for a spot inside the top five. Yoder squared was able to pick up another position as Waughtel began to fade just a bit. Lucas Fuller was able to hold off a hard challenging Yoder with laps winding down. Jordan Iiams had a good lead over the field and took the victory. David Yoder picked up dual honors finishing in the runner up spot and the hard charger award. Lucas Fuller finished in third. The top three drivers picked up extra money from Best Performance Motorsports. Iiams also walked away with a nice prize pack courtesy of RIchmond Gear.

The Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints put on one killer show during their 20 lap feature event. Jake Hesson in the 5J and Riley VanHose in the 96 led the field to the green flag. The sprints did not even clear turn two when the red flag flew for the 42 of Ty Tilton who went over the banking in turn two. The car created a pathway in the Waynesfield corn field lining the track in turn two. Titlon climbed out of the car under his own power free of any injuries. Tow trucks had to get creative on how to remove the 42 from the corn field and bring the car back up the banking. The 39 of Cole Robertson also spun in the process exiting turn two. On the restart, Jake Hesson took the early lead shuffling VanHise back to second. It only took a few laps until lap traffic started to build creating some obstacles for Hesson. The lap traffic did not seem to faze him as Dunham and Winks could not pick up as much ground on the top spot as they wanted. As the halfway point closed in, the yellow flew for the 13 of Patrick Mead who came to a stop on the top side of turn one. The caution was just what VanHise needed as he jumped into the lead on the restart. VanHise started to pull away but was caught up to when second, third, and fourth place drivers turned some of the fastest lap times of the night. With cross flags displayed, a three wide battle developed exiting turn three returning the lead to the 5J of Hesson. VanHise began to fall like a rock as his second place spot faded further and further away. The following lap showed another yellow as VanHise stopped on the top side of turn two with a steering issue. He was not able to be pushed and required a wrecker escort off the racing surface. Second place was not the place to be as Rob Winks found himself in a similar situation as VanHise. Just after the restart, Winks pulled his number 55 into the infield giving up his second place spot. Two cautions would follow involving Brad Racer and Cole Robertson. The finals restart was unsuccessful for Chase Dunham as he made a nice move for the lead. Hesson would finish and collect his one way ticket to Best Performance Motorsports victory lane. Chase Dunham finished second with Rod Henning finishing in third. After failing post race inspection, Rod Henning was disqualified from the A-main. JR Wood advanced 14 spots to finish seventh picking up the Foz Speed Partz hard charger award.

Finally, the Block Insurance Tough Trucks took the track for 15 laps of action. Gabe Twining and Kevin Knittle led the field to the opening green flag. The field was stacked with drivers not commonly seen in the tough truck class, making the A-main extra racey. Twining took the early lead as Jerry Sawmiller and Roy Miller went door to door for second and third. Buzz Jacobs in the Hick’s number 33 looked on as the two went back and forth trading paint. Mike Sawmiller started on the outside of row three and decided to take a stab at the lead. The instinct paid off as Mike Sawmiller found himself in the top spot early on. Sawmiller would hold down the lead for the remainder of the race with help from him dad Jerry blocking the competition. Jacobs did manage to get around but did not have the power to challenge for the lead. Late in the race, Shane Jacobs went up on two wheels trying to gain a position in the middle of the pack. He commented about how much fun it was battling and hoped the fans got a kick out of the run. When the dust settled, Mike Sawmiller came away with the win. Buzz Jacobs finished in second with the second of the Sawmiller duo finishing in third. Aside from getting the win, Mike Sawmiller was also awarded the hard charger award.
