Southern Ohio Speedway Memorial Day Championship Preview

WHEELERSBURG, OH-Memorial Day weekend has long served as the “unofficial” start of summer and with that comes a huge weekend of racing that includes many dirt track races, the Indy 500, and the Coca Cola 600. An exciting Memorial Day weekend of racing begins this Friday, May 23rd with the “Memorial Day Championships” featuring WRS Late Models, Modifieds, GCP Engines Sport Mods, Pure Stocks, and Enduros. The best part? Adult general admission will only be $10!
WRS Late Model Preview
Michael Meyers took the WRS Late Model division by storm last weekend by taking the feature win. Meyers pulled off a full sweep as he was fast qualifier, won his heat race, and led every lap of the feature. The win was far from easy however for Meyers as he held off strong challenges from Richie Edwards and Danial Kattine. Joe Whitt, Joey Back, Conard Newman, and Bill Staker were all running strong in the race before getting caught up in a big pileup. Meanwhile, David Grubb and Ronnie Whitt thrilled the crowd with an incredible battle for third.Last weekend definitely showed the parity and competitive racing that the WRS Late Model class is potential of producing.
The stars and cars of the WRS Late Model division will be back on track this weekend for their final tuneup before the June 6th “Pickett Concrete 25″ that will pay the class $1,500 to win. It is wide open who will take the feature win on Friday.
Modified Preview
The Modified division has been super competitive this season with two different feature winners in two races. Jeremy Rayburn took the checkered flag on Opening Night while Brian Skaggs took the feature win last weekend. Rayburn and Skaggs finished first and second in last year’s points respectively and early on in the season have shown themselves as the two drivers to beat. However, drivers such as Dan Ebert, Adam Colley, Mike Matney, and Todd Robinson have been right on their heels and are also knocking on the door of taking a feature win. It will be another great show on Friday in the Modified division.
GCP Engines Sport Mod Preview
The racing action in the GCP Engines Sport Mod division has also been super competitive with two different winners in two races. The young drivers have came out on top so far as Emily Jordan took the win on Opening Night while Tony Whitt Jr. took the win last weekend. Last year’s track champion Danny Hamilton has came from deep in the field the past two weeks to come up with second place finishes. 2012 track champion Eric Dennison has also been strong as he finished third last weekend. Just like in the other divisions, it is wide open who will take the win on Friday in the GCP Engines Sport Mod division.
Pure Stock Preview
Lamar Murdock has taken both feature wins thus far to start out the season in the Pure Stock division. Will Murdock be able to claim his third win in a row on Friday?
Enduro Preview
The Enduro class has been extremely competitive this season with three different winners in three races. Brad Miller took the win in the Spring Thaw while Justin Miller won on Opening Night and Phil Cox took the win last weekend. The Enduros are always a lot of fun to watch and is a great way for people to get from the stands to the track inexpensively.
Times and Admission Prices
Gates will open at 4:00 pm on Friday with hot laps starting the nights action at 7:30 pm. General admission is only $10 (ages 17 and up), $5 (ages 13-16), $2 (ages 7-12), and free (ages 6 and under).
