Eldora Mudsummer Classic Named Outstanding Short Track Event
3 min readROSSBURG, Ohio (Feb. 24) – Auto racing promoters from the United States and Canada voted Eldora Speedway’s inaugural 1-800 CarCash Mudsummer Classic featuring the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series – the landmark event marking the first NASCAR National Series event on dirt in nearly 43 years – the Outstanding Annual Short Track Event of the Year.
The announcement was made at the 41st annual Racing Promotion Monthly (RPM) Promoter Workshops in Daytona Beach, Fla.
“Over the last 20 years, the Outstanding Annual Short Track Event of the Year award has gone to the biggest and most well-known events in our industry,” said Stewart Doty, editor of Racing Promotion Monthly. “Many of these events had been around for 20, 30, 40 and even 50 plus years when RPM readers elected to honor them with this award.”
“Today, we recognize an event that was held for the first-time only last July. It sent waves throughout oval racing, impacting short tracks – especially dirt tracks – across the nation and was widely acclaimed for returning NASCAR back to its roots,” continued Doty, the longtime organizer of the annual RPM Workshops. “Our readers decided that this year’s award should be added to the pile of accolades already bestowed upon the historic CarCash Mudsummer Classic NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event.”
The award marks the third time one of Eldora Speedway’s major events has been honored at the RPM Workshop and continues its reign as the only Speedway to have received the award multiple times. Eldora founder, Earl Baltes, was bestowed the honor for the 1997 Kings Royal, the $50,000-to-win World of Outlaws sprint car extravaganza held annually each July. The 2007 prize was presented to Eldora’s current owner and three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion, Tony Stewart, for the Prelude to the Dream Charity Race featuring stars from non-dirt racing disciplines tackling Eldora’s tricky dirt surface.
“Obviously, being recognized by our peers for such a non-traditional and first-time event was a great surprise and a true honor for everybody on our staff at Eldora,” said Roger Slack, Promoter and General Manager of the 61 year old facility. “It was a tremendous gamble and undertaking for not just Eldora but the surrounding communities, our partners at NASCAR and the race teams. Everyone’s hard work and teamwork resulted in a memorable night that showcased dirt racing to a whole new audience and the highest-rated Camping World Truck Series broadcast of 2013.”
1-800 CarCash – the fastest way to sell your car since 1977 – was featured in the July 2013 series premiere episode of CNBC Prime’s ‘The Profit’ starring Marcus Lemonis, business turnaround king and CEO of Camping World. The second season of ‘The Profit’ premieres Tuesday, February 25 at 10 p.m. ET. An update on 1-800 CarCash since Lemonis invested and showcased the company nationally via the event entitlement will be included in an upcoming episode.
