Skyline to run Saturdays, Midway to run Fridays in 2014
7 min readRACINE, OHIO-The American Motor Racing Association, owned by the DRIVE investment group, has announced that Skyline Speedway in Stewart, Ohio and the Midway Speedway in Crooksville, Ohio have continued their ties to the organization hailed as having the World’s fastest Open Wheel Modifieds. Skyline will switch from Friday nights to Saturday nights in 2014, while Midway will become the Friday night venue for the northern-most tier of the AMRA.
Skyline and Midway join Atomic, Princeton, Ohio Valley, I-77, Legendary Hilltop, O’Brion, and Thunder Mountain on the AMRA slate. At this time plans for Beckley are uncertain.
Jerry Perine, who promoted Midway last season has secured the lease on Skyline Speedway and will operate both tracks, featuring Octane AMRA Modifieds, Kryptonite AMRA Late Models, Fastrak Crate Late Models, MOVE Modifieds, Outlaw Four Cylinders, Enduro cars, and mini-wedges. Perine takes great pride in announcing that his tracks are the first two Ohio tracks to sign with Fastrak. Just hot off the press is the announcement that Street Stocks will also be at Midway Speedway in 2014 thanks to class sponsor Licking County Auto Auction.
“I am very, very excited about this 2014 racing season,” said Perine. “There is still a lot of work to be done, but in the end it will be worth it. A lot is going on here behind the scenes.”
Perine is rebuilding the Press Box at Skyline and has ordered all new boards for the bleachers among many other smaller projects at the facility. “Racing is a family sport and one of my goals is to build a playground there for the kids. We are also going to give away a bicycle each and every week like we did at Midway last year and have both a Miss and Mr. Skyline Speedway crowned each week to involve the kids.”
The MOVE Mods–the acronym for Mid-Ohio Valley Economy Modifieds– is also the brainchild of Perine who wants to establish an affordable class for grassroots racers, while also hosting the more powerful late models who have proven to be fan favorites and mainstays for most area tracks.
“My goals is to make racing a more family oriented sport once again, like it was when I was a kid,” said Perine. “That’s why I started the MOVE class and that’s why we run the enduro’s every week. Racing has to be affordable. With just the higher classes of cars comes high expense, especially in the engines. It’s gets to the point where it takes the fun out of it when all the competition is based on who has the biggest wallet.”
Another goal of the enduro racing according to Perine is “I am trying to encourage the guys to go ahead and move up into another class if they find out they like it. They can move up to a 4-cylinder and eventally maybe even a higher class. Everyone has to start somewhere.”
Perine bills Midway as “Your Friday Night Addiction” and Skyline as “Your Saturday Night Addiction”, Because of the close proximity of the two tracks the AMRA Kryptonite Late Models and the Fastrak Late Models will have a joint point fund between the two tracks that collectively will award each champion a Kryptonite Chassis. Other classes will have combined point funds and sponsors are being sought.
Additionally, each class including both LM classes will have individual track point funds. Point funds will be announced at a later date.
Besides its regular classes, Skyline will host seven 410 sprint car races and Midway will host four events for the powerful open-wheelers.
Admission at Midway will be Pits $30, Kids 12-and-under Pit Passes $10, General Admission $12 for Adults; $6 for Sr. Citizens; and Kids 12-and-under free. Gates Open at 5:00 p.m., the driver’s meeting will be at 7:00 p.m., and hot laps are at 7:30 p.m. Fans and drivers are reminded that “Hot Laps with Transponders” are the time trials and racing will commence after all cars have qualified.
Pit Admission at Skyline is $30, 12-and-under Pit Admission is $15 (or half price!) while General Admission is $15 Adult, $12 Sr. Citizens, and 12-and-under free. Gates open at 4:30, the driver’s meeting is at 6:00 p.m., and hot laps with transponders are at 6:30 p.m. Also at Skyline Hot Laps will serve as qualifications because of the transponders.
Transponders and raceceivers are required at both tracks. They are mandatory. Drivers that do not have raceceivers can rent them or purchase them at the two tracks.
Perine has added yet another incentive to lure drivers to his venue. Drivers must have a car registered and must have the car at the track to take advantage of this discount. Until March 1, Perine is offering an annual pass of $150 that counts towards all races that have a $30 pit pass fee. If it is a special event such as the Harvest 50 or Jim Dunn Memorial where the Pit Pass is $40, those drivers taking advantage of the season pass will pay just $10. This is a great bargain for any driver planning to run either track on a regular basis. Clarification: Drivers can purchase a $150 season pass for Midway and another separate season pass for Skyline.
Perine also believes in loyalty among the ranks. Although he does have nearly a complete staff in place for both Midway and Skyline, he asks that any longtime Skyline Speedway employee that is still interested in working the 2014 race season to contact him at the following phone numbers.
Race car registration at Skyline is $25 for the year and it is advised that all drivers have the form filled out as posted on the website for the first night of racing. AMRA drivers are also asked to send in their money and AMRA application to the AMRA in advance of the first race for both Skyline and Midway (for Octane Modifieds and Late Models).
Perine is selling year-long parking spots at either track for $100.00 until March 1st. After that, parking passes are $150.00. 4×8 business signs are on sale now at $400 at Skyline and $300 at Midway. If a business wants a sponsorship sign, those are available. It was also noted that anyone wanting to sponser a class would get all radio, website and flyer coverage, multiplying their exposure to potential customers.
