Despite morning showers and threatening skies most of the afternoon, the staff at Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Motor Speedway persevered to present race fans the second annual Pot of Gold event. The threat of rain and the high winds clearly hurt the attendance on both sides of the gate. However, a full field of 20 Honest Abe Roofing FAST On Dirt sprint cars drew in for competition.
Ti22 Performance time trials saw 2019 tour champion, Cole Duncan, fastest overall with a 15.021 second lap (an average of 149.790 mph) to pick up a $200 bonus from Knox Bakery. Dan Kuriger and Brandon Spithaler also quick timed their respective heat race groups. Ricky Peterson would win Patriot Capital Financial heat race number one. Victory Fuel heat race number 2 was won by A.J. Flick and New York’s Matt Farnham claimed JLT Enterprises heat 3.
Spithaler would draw the pole position for the 20-lap main event sprint during the Tub O’ Towels redraw. Dan Kuriger would start outside the front row. Flick and Peterson would roll off from row 2 with Farnham and Michael Bauer in row 3. At the drop of the green, Spithaler wasted no time shooting to the lead and would lead the first half of the race. Flick would get by on lap eleven and appeared to be headed for an easy win.
Spithaler, in the Barris Supply 32 got up on the wheel and chased Flick down and the duo would battle for the lead through traffic. On lap 18, Spithaler threw a monster slider in turn 1 as the pair split a lapped car, clearing Flick for the lead, but the momentum killing move allowed Flick to drive back past. He would go on to the win, driving his own number 2 car sponsored by Freguson Heating & Air, Fence By Maintenance Service, Worthington Steel, Moon Ford, MAHLE, and J&J Contracting.
Following Flick and Spithaler at the finish were Matt Farnham, Ricky Peterson and Derek Hauck. The rest of the top 10 included Michael Bauer, Tyler Gunn, Bob Felmlee, Cody Bova, and Brandon Matus. Cars losing transponders led to an incorrect finish at payoff, however, things were corrected and the effected drivers were correctly compensated. The next race for the Honest Abe Roofing FAST On Dirt tour is Sunday, April 13 at Millstream Speedway in Findlay, Ohio in a combined show with the MPD RacingBuckeye Outlaw Sprint Series.
