New & Familiar Faces Find Victory Lane At Wayne County Speedway
9 min readThey say when life gives you lemons you squeeze them and make Lemonade. If that’s the case then we have ourselves a lemonade superstore. The tracks water pump used to fill the water truck had decided to quit working. A replacement pump was purchased and brought in and that pump would fail. A smaller pump would be used as track promoter Jason Flory was ready to take advantage of a beautiful day that mother nature gave us.
The Pine Tree Towing and Recovery sprint cars would be the first feature of the night. Local legend Lee Jacobs would lead the field with two-time feature winner this season Ricky Peterson to his outside. The first Bucks Auto Sales yellow flag would come out on lap 1 for the 3TN of Tyler Newhart going around. On the restart Lee Jacobs would rocket from the 2 of Peterson. On lap 8 the yellow would fly again as Tanner Tecco would spin collecting the 2 of Joe Adorjan. Tecco would unfortunately be done for the night. At lap 5 seventh place starter Jamie Myers would bring his Pine Tree Towing 1 car to life and make a charge to the 81 of Lee Jacobs. Myers almost had the lead until another spin would bring out a yellow flag at lap 6. At that time Jason Flory would get on the Radio and announce an open red to try and get some water back into turn number 2. WCS officials and drivers alike had shared a concern for the visibility in the turn. After a lengthy red flag Jacobs would lead the field back to the green once more. 12 laps to go Peterson would start reeling in the 81 of Jacobs. Lap traffic would work in Jacobs favor as he was able to put them behind his Dac Vitamins and Minerals 81 car and attempt to give him some open air. The yellow would fly again with 8 laps to go with Chris Myers spinning in turn number 2. At the restart Jacobs would fire first as Ricky Peterson would see some company in the form of the 91 of Tyler Gunn. Gunn and Peterson would throw down for second until one more yellow would fly with 2 to go. On the restart Jacobs hit his marks perfectly. 4 Cars would battle for second the last 2 laps. Lee Jacobs would take home the win and as the dust settled it was Tyler Gunn taking home second and Jamie Myers bringing home a 3rd.
The Malcuits Tavern UMP Late Models would hit the track next. This race would be a part of the Best Western Plus King of The County Points leader Kyler Moore would be on the pole with a very fast Larry Bellman on his outside. A yellow would fly for a car off the pace. We would line them back up for another restart. That restart would end up in a bit of chaos as everyone bumped into everyone. At the end of the mele Clint Coffman ended up on the nose of Dave Hornickel with Jason Henderson slid into the pair. Under the yellow Bellman had to change a tire unfortunately sending him to the tail. This would make the new front row Kyle Moore and JR Gentry. The track would finally see some green flag laps. Moore would burst out to lead as Gentry would follow suit. The battle for third would heat up between legend Ryan Markham and Michigan native Nick Kurtz. Lap 5 would see another Bucks auto sales Yellow with the 22 of Dylan Spears would spin around. 17 Laps to go Markham would clear Kurtz and make a run past Gentry to give Moore a run for his money. Moore would stick to his marks to continue leading the field. At the halfway mark the age-old battle of Markham and Gentry would begin as they would trade slide jobs for the second spot. All while Moore continues a Memorial Day drive. Chace Coffman would spin late in the feature to stack the field back up. That would allow Markham a chance to get past the 1* of Moore. Moore would continue to run his preferred top line to hold onto the lead. With 3 laps to go Gentry would once again charge to try and get passed the 5M of Markham to try and get one more position in the 25-lap feature. As Moore was coming to the white flag Nick Cox would spin in turn 2 to give us a late race restart. At the Restart Moore jumped to the lead once more and would bring the field back to the checkered to win his third WCS feature in a row. Markham second and Gentry third.
The Flynn’s Tire & Service Center UMP Modifieds took to the 3/8 Oval all be with a sprinkling of dust on their cars. New York native Daniel Sanchez would sit on the pole with previous feature winner Nate Young to his Outside. Field would take the green with Young getting an early lead. The first yellow flag would fly as Bradly Blaylock and Richard Grogg would loop their respective cars around. After a second yellow immediately after the first the racing would begin as Nate Young and Nick Sanchez had a great restart. As the field went into turn one 5th place start Mitchell Lam in the 12 car would charge into the party and make it a 3 car battle for the lead. Young would begin to drive away leaving Lam and Sanchez to duke it for second. Lap 3 would see another spin and another yellow. Back underway Lam would find some power and begin to battle with Nate Young up to a lap 4 yellow. The field would refire once more. Lap 7 would see Jimmy Humphrey and Vinnie DiPizzo battle for 5th. The yellow would fly again at lap 8. Lam would start throwing some Slide jobs at the halfway mark before another spin would bring the yellow back out. Lam tried again to get past the 42 of Young but was unsuccessful. Our old friend the Yellow Flag came back out on lap 11. On the restart the field would bump around causing Humphrey and Sanchez to collide keeping the track under yellow flag conditions. After a third straight Bucks Auto Sales yellow flag Officials decided to shorten the race down to a 15 lap race due to time constraints. Once the race got back underway Young would rocket off the start. Casey Buttler would bring his 99 car to life to make a move past the 12 of Lam. At the end of it all Nate Young came home on top. Case Buttler comes home second, and Mitchell Lam 3rd.
Next to do battle would be The Glass House Super Stocks. Kyle Moore would start on the pole in his Street Stock Debut with Previous Feature Winner Brandon Morrow to his outside. As the green flew it quickly became a battle between Moore and Morrow. Moore would run the Bob Daugherty owned 21D on the top side where he prefers it. 2 laps in Morrow would see some company in the form of Jim Nicley in the 72 before getting in the rough stuff on the bottom and spinning around to bring out a Bucks Auto Sales Yellow Flag. Morrow would try and make the bottom work in his C9 car and hang right with the 21D of Moore. Morrow would take the lead on lap 5 before Moore would steal it back 2 laps later. Morrow would try running every line he could to get past the 21D of Moore. His attempts would be unsuccessful as Moore would take the field all the way to the checkered flag with Morrow in second and Charlie Duncan would finish Third.
The time may had been getting late but that didn’t stop the adrenaline in the Joyride Transport Mini Stocks. Current second in points Doug Hensel would lead the field. Henel would be joined on the front row by Zach Hershey looking to extend a weekend of winning after getting the win at Hilltop the evening prior. Hensel would charge to the early lead as Anthony Collins would battle with Hershey for second. Collins would have second over Hershey for a couple of laps until Hershey would get by him on Lap 4. At lap 6, unknowingly to the rest of the field Hensel would experience suspension issues in the Right rear forcing Doug to start taking his 18 Machine a little easy. Harshey would real the 18 in with about 3 laps to go. Hershey took a look to the bottom of Hensel and would cruise by the 18 coming to the white flag. Hensel would stand on the loud pedal to try and get past the 278 even inciting a drag race to the finish but it would be Zach Hershey in Summit Racing Victory Lane. Hensel would come home second, and Cody Musselman would finish 3rd.
Wayne County is back in Action this Saturday as The Race To The Championship presented by O’Reilly’s Auto Parts hit the halfway mark. All 5 classes will race for double points in the mid-season championship. The Joyride Transport Mini Stocks will also have round one of their King Of The County presented by Henthorn Golf Cart Sales and Service.
