Deja Vu For Gentry At Hilltop

7 min read

For most of the Holmes Tire Late Model feature, it was a rerun of last weeks event that saw JR Gentry being chased by George Lee and for Gentry, it was the same finish for the second week in a row at Hilltop Speedway in front of a filled grandstand of fans. The difference this week was that the Wooster driver would win the dash to start on the pole with points leader Charlie Duncan beside him. Duncan would hang tough with Gentry for the first four laps when sixth starting George Lee would put himself into contention by getting by Rick Bond for third on lap three and then duel with Duncan for second. With a couple of cautions and a red flag for Matt Robinette’s car getting on top of Keith Tish’s ride, ending both of their nights, the field stayed bunched together and following a Ty Myers caution on lap seven, the pace would pick up with Lee pestering Gentry for the lead with Duncan right behind them. With those three challenging for the lead, a four car battle for fourth was in progress with Bond, Dzugan Fire & Rescue quick timer Ryan Markham, Corey Conley and Brad Malcuit in the mix. As the laps clicked off, both Gentry and Lee would rub the walls in the corners with Lee’s car getting the rear spoiler pulled apart as Gentry and his El Campensino Restarant, Buckeye Container & Sluss Realty #14 was able to pull out to a five car length lead to win for the second week in a row. Duncan would edge past Lee for second as the white flag waved. Conley slipped past Bond for fourth with two laps to finish fourth as Bond held on to fifth. Conley and Myers won the heat races as Hornikel topped the last chance race.

Tanner Wilson of Zanesville set fast time for the Raceday Photo Modifieds and then finished second to Norm Aronhalt in the dash as those two would lead the field to the green flag but it was all Wilson out front of the feature. Aronhalt would give the Buckeye Screen Print and Lucas Oil #17 of Wilson a run early on but four time winner and sixth starting Jesse Wisecarver would take over second on lap nine but could never wrestle the lead away as Wilson would collect his second checkered flag in three week. Seventh starting Nathan Loney and last week’s winner, Jimmy Smith, would catch and join Aronhalt for a three way race for third with Loney taking third on lap 12 to finish there as Smith settled for fifth. Loney and Matt Samples chalked up the heat wins as Jason Graham posted the last chance win.

Kyle Dickinson had been close to winning a Street Stock feature at Hilltop Speedway this year but had always came up short until this week as he went flag to flag aboard the Nashport based, Creno’s Pizza and Jewett Motorsports #101 for the win. John Wilson was also looking for his first win hounded Dickinson for the lead while holding off points leader Ryan Wisecarver for second as the three heat winners would run top three all race long after Wisecarver edged past Brandon Gardner on the opening lap, who would spend the rest of the race trying to get back into the top three. Ninth starting Bob Chilcote worked his way up to fifth place finish.

Wooster’s Gary Hensel Jr. beat fellow heat winner Dustin Daugherty into turn one of the Mini Stock main and then spent all race with Daugherty on his rear bumper but held on to score his first win driving the Thompson’s Garage and DJ Directional Services #28h. Chris Priebe and Jason St. John finished a close third and fourth as last week’s winner, Terry Adkins filled out the top five.

Six time winner Cole Lillibridge and John Large of Warsaw, the two heat winners, battled for lead of the Bugs-R-Gone Truck feature with Large having a pass on Lillibridge negated by a caution flag on lap five. As the two raced for the lead, Lillibridge’s truck lost power on lap ten, giving the top spot to Large, who would finish the race out in front and put the L & L Auto and Advanced Auto Parts #17 into victory lane for the first time this year. Points leader Kevin Potts ran second followed by Jerry Gardner, Tom Garlick and Travis Winterringer.

The Modlites returned for some action at Hilltop Speedway and it was Painesville’s Tyler Frankenberry taking home his first win. Frankenberry and the Johnson Demolition #38 would lead all the way and cruise to the victory as Nick Crider held off two time winner Tracy Fritter for second with Brian Stuhldreher finished fourth in front of Gary Griffith. Heat wins were claimed by Frankenberry and Stuhldreher.

Tanner McLoughlin squeezed past race long leader Taylor Huggins on the last lap to win the A-1 feature for the Mike’s Service Mini Wedges as the Zanesville youngster put the McLoughlin Auto Sales and 2 Brothers Motorsports # 59 into the Hilltop Speedway victory circle for the second time. Phil Bubeck finished third behind Huggins as Destinie Bates and Hannah Rose rounded out the top five. In his first trip to Hilltop from Port Washington PA., Colten McPeek and his Impact Graphics & Design #13 passed Tyler Tennant on lap five to win the A-2 feature. Donovan Dickerson edged past Tennant on the last lap for second with Brayden Renfrew and Anthony Graham filling out the top five. McLoughlin, Chase Settles and Higgins scored the heat wins.

Season Championships will take place next Saturday, August 17th at Hilltop Speedway
