2023 Ona Season Starts Saturday With Putnam County Bank Throwback Night
2 min readONA, WV-After rainouts every race so far this spring, the weather forecast finally looks great for racing at Ona Speedway this Saturday, June 3rd for Putnam County Bank Throwback Night. A full seven division racing program of All Season’s Powersports Late Models, Patriot Meat Processing Modifieds, Haunted Majestic Street Stocks, Mays Tire & Service Center INEX Legends Car Pro, Jeffrey Trucking INEX Legends Car Semi-Pro, and Gumbo Stop Cafe Crazy Compacts for a total of 175 laps of feature racing.
Saturday will begin the 60th Anniversary Season for the speedway. Ona Speedway, then called West Virginia International Speedway, hosted the NASCAR Cup Series races in 1963, 1964, 1970, and 1971 with Richard Petty winning three of those races. The track has been a hotbed for weekly short track racing since the mid 1990’s. To celebrate the track’s rich history on Saturday, the speedway is encouraging everyone to wear their throwback gear and the track will also be hosting a Champions Reunion at intermission to honor all previous track champions in attendance.
Saturday’s racing action is sure to be some of the most intense of the season. Drivers have been waiting to hit the speedway for racing at Ona since October of last year. The speedway was set to open in April, but weather has postponed all races up to this point of the season. With the rainouts, it has also decreased the number of points races, making for even more urgency for drivers to have a strong finish on Saturday.
Pit gates will open at 1:00 pm on Saturday with general admission gates opening at 5:00 pm. Racing will start at 6:30 pm. General admission is only $15 for ages 13 and up and free for ages 12 and under. All access pit passes are $35 for ages 13 and up and free for ages 12 and under.
