McElfresh 55 to Barrett

DeGraff OH 5/22): The temperature and the racing were both hot at Shady Bowl Speedway Saturday night (5/22). Five divisions took to the oval to the delight of a large crowd.
The Harrod Septic Solutions Compacts headlined the program as they competed in the “McElfresh 55”, a 55 feature to honor Bill McElfresh. McElfresh has built countless cars and assisted many drivers thru out his career. Twenty six cars took the green to start the race, with Charlie Hoepker leading lap one. Justin Kemp took over the helm on lap two, as the field battled for spots behind him. Kemp held the lead until less than 25 laps to go when Nick Barrett of Kettering motored by. Barrett set a torrid pace in his Barrett Machine and Tool sponsored Cavalier once he passed Kemp. Ethan Pope soon picked off Kemp for second and set sail for Barrett. He was able to catch Barrett and run with him but could not get by him cleanly and had to settle for second. Kemp was third, with Jason Parsons fourth and Chris Lucas fifth. There were two “B” mains, with Matt Oppy and Michael Litchfield taking checkers. Ryan Tamburro was fast qualifier with a 16.951 lap.
The Dave Nagel Excavating Late Models competed in a 35 lap feature. Indiana driver Jake Hinton surged out front at the drop of the green flag. Fast qualifier (13.870) Ryan Fleming, Matthew Parsons and Don Mahaffey Jr battled for second thru fourth changing running order every lap. Parsons, of Columbus passed Hinton on lap 19, leaving him to battle with Fleming and Mahaffey. The white flag flew with Parsons out front, Hinton second Mahaffey third and Fleming fourth. Coming off two heading to the checker Hinton had a tire going down causing a scramble that saw Fleming finish second, followed by Hinton, Mahaffey and Matt Jackson. The win was the first of the year for Parsons, the defending track champion in his Ohio Pallets sponsored Chevy. The dash checker went to Parsons with Kenny George Jr winning the heat race.
The Adams Automotive Street Stocks were up next for their 25-lap main. Tyler Mahaffey set the pace for the first four counters before giving way to his Uncle Jason Mahaffey. Mahaffey looked to have the field covered until fast qualifier (14.646) Josh Sage ran him down with less than ten laps to go. The two battled for the lead, but like the compact race it was a clean battle and Sage had to settle for second to the Dayton driver in his Quick Parts Monte Carlo. Rodney Roush, Corey Plunkett and Terry Purtee rounded out the top five.
Roush won the dash, with Jason Mahaffey and Buck Purtee winning heat races.
The Bullet Liners of Dayton Thunder Cars pulled out next for their 25-lap main. Curtis Noble put his Ford out front the first 18 laps before a flat tire sent him to the pits. Brad Blue of Union then took over the lead. Blue in his North Star Maintenance, led the final circuits to notch his first official win. Scott Drake, Landen Jones, Corey Wooten and Bob Coppock rounded out the top five. Blue was fast qualifier with a 15.599 lap.
Drake was the dash winner with Jones winning the heat.
The Tuners made their first appearance of the season with a 40-lap feature. Ron Sagers led the early laps before Terry Eaton Jr took over.
The former champion and multiple time feature winner had a monkey on his back all year with bad luck and looked like he had finally shook it off as he built up a big lead. But with seven to go the monkey turned into a gorilla as he was sent to the pits with a flat tire. The lead went to Indiana driver Alex Bube. The final circuits turned into a battled between the Jeffersonville driver and local favorite Gary Eaton Jr.. It also was a very clean race as Eaton could only watch as Bube’s Bradshaw Motorsports four cylinder took the checker. Ron Sagers, Holli Eaton and TJ Gregory rounded out the top five. Gary Eaton was fast qualifier with a 15.298 lap.
This Saturday (5/29) will be race #2 in the Thunder and Lightning Series for the Bullet Liners of Dayton Thunder Cars. The Wooten Automotive and Towing Modifieds, The Noble Crown Vic Minor and Adults and Harrod Septic Solutions Compacts will be in action. Racing at 7.
