Hilltop Mid-Season Championship Results

After a week off because of rain and Mid Season Championships on the line, the pits and stands were full at Hilltop Speedway for some action packed racing. Dash winner Ty Myers and Dzugan Fire and Rescue fast qualifier George Lee sat on the front row of the Holmes Tire Late Model feature but that was short lived as Lee smacked the wall in turn one on the start, ending his night quickly. That would move Ashland’s Ryan Markham up to the outside front row and he and Myers would go side by side until Myers would spin out on lap seven. JR Gentry, Tyler Carpenter and Rick Bond were locked up in the battle for third up to that point in the race and when the race went back to green, Gentry started to hound Markham for the lead as Carpenter and Bond went back and forth for third with Charlie Duncan, Wayne Maffett Jr. and Brad Malcuit dueling for fifth. With Markham using the high groove and Gentry driving the low line, they pulled away from the rest of the contenders and as they came up on the back of the field, Markham and his Malcuit Engines and Rocket Chassis #5m would slice his way through the slower cars and pull away from Gentry to post his first win of the year at Hilltop. Carpenter won the battle for third over Bond as Maffett Jr. took fifth as Myers worked his way back up to sixth. Carpenter and Bond scored the heat wins.
Jess Hartman beat dash winner Kevin Morehouse into turn one and set the pace for the Raceday Photos Modified feature with fast qualifier Jesse Wisecarver, Jimmy Smith, Nathan Loney and Robin Duston hooked up for third. Hartman started to get slowed up by a pack of cars that were racing for position theirselves late in the race which allowed Morehouse to close in. On the white flag lap, Hartman made contact with end of the lead lap car of Gary Clark as Hartman was coming out of turn four for the checkered flag. Clark’s car collected Matt Samples vehicle and because of that wreck, Hartman was charged with starting the melee and was placed to the end of the lead lap cars which was 11th as Morehouse and his Morehouse Logging and Sam’s Used Cars #28 collected the checkered flag. Wisecarver finished second as Jimmy Smith held off Nathan Loney for third with Robin Duston pocketing fifth. Heat winners were David Bodkins and Bruce Miller as Samples won the last chance race.
Steve Wolford led the opening two laps of the Street Stock main from his starting pole position but it was Miamisburg’s Brandon Gardner propelling into the lead on lap three and take the Schaeffer Oil and Rowtec #g27 into victory lane for the fourth time this year. Bob Daugherty slipped past Wolford with three laps to go for second as Ryan West recovered from an early spin to finish fourth as Tony Cline filled out the top five. Wolford, Bob Chilcote and Gardner collected the heat wins with Gary Hensel Sr. topping the last chance race.
Wooster’s Brad Hensel and his Sportsman’s Bar and DJ Directional Services #28 was challenged all race long by Jordan James and held on for his third Thompson’s Garage Mini Stock feature victory. As the two heat winners battled for the lead, Jason St. John was in the mix in case they slipped up but settled for third with Blaine Markey and James Priebe rounding out the top five.
Rolly Heyder and Jim Large won the Bugs-R-Gone Truck heat races but their night would end completely different. Galena’s Heyder would go flag to flag aboard the Jack Maxton Chevrolet and Nichels Towing #10 for his first victory of the season while Large, who is in his 80’s and doubles as the track chaplain, rolled and bounced off the catch fencing in turn two on the last lap. He was ok after the crash. Cole Lillibridge ran second as Kevin Potts, John Large and Jerry Gardner rounded out the top five.
Braxton Wilson led the way for the opening three laps of the Mike’s Service Mini Wedge first feature but spun out on lap four as Zanesville’s Blake Morris inherited the lead and then take the Morris Trucking #1 to victory circle for the fourth time. Phil Bubeck, Tristen Brown, Aiden Fritter and Logan Duncan filled out the top five. Warsaw’s Nick Large made a last lap pass on Hannah Rose for the second feature win as Dan Selway, Karyssa Beagle and Tyler Tennant trailed. Duncan, Wilson and Morris claimed the heat wins.
Next Saturday night will be the Street Stock Invite as they will run for $1,000 to win as all other class’ will be in regular action at Hilltop Speedway with race time set for 7:30 pm.
