Blair Wins Twice, Kinney, Miller, McGuire & Speer Also Score Eriez Wins
8 min readHammett, PA (August 4, 2019) — It was Kid’s Night sponsored by Phantom Graphics at Eriez Speedway with fun and games for kids of all ages. Bicycles were given away as well as tee-shirts and lots of games and fun for the little ones. For the older kids (men and women) there was hot racing action under the hot August sun. At the end of the night Victory Lane was host to Max Blair for the eighth time in the New Motors Super Late Model feature and the seventh time in the Bonnell’s Auto Group RUSH Late Models. Mike Kinney collected his second win of the season in the Waterford Hotel E-Mods, Kyle Miller got his fifth Johnson’s Car Care Economod win, Chris McGuire triumphed for the fifth time in the Curtze Food Service Street Stocks, and Dillon Speer picked up his first L & D Tree Service win.
The Super Late Model feature had Bump Hedman and Doug Eck on the front row but on the initial start was called back when it was determined that Hedman “jumped” early and was thusly penalized to the second row for the restart. Eck grabbed the early lead over Matt Urban, Hedman, Max Blair, who started sixth, and Jake Finnerty. Third-starting Bob Dorman and Finnerty both spun heading into turn one on lap two. At lap three Eck slid wide in turn two, falling back to fourth in the order. Urban took over at the front with Blair, Hedman, Eck, and Greg Oakes filling out the top five. At six laps Urban and Blair were side by side for the lead with Urban pulling back to the front a lap later. Then, on lap eight, Blair went by for the lead and Oakes got by Eck for fifth. Wendell Pinckney spun in turn two at lap twelve. On this restart Easton Hedman made hard contact with the front straight wall, ending his night. At halfway it was Blair, Hedman, who got back to second at green, Urban, Eck, and Oakes. Oakes got back by Eck then on the front straight contact was made from Eck to Oakes, sending Oakes sliding through the infield. At fifteen laps the front five were Blair, Urban, Bump Hedman, Eck, and Mike Knight. Eck got to third with five to go. Pinckney spun in turn four at five to go. On the restart it was three-wide for fourth place among Knight, Breyton Santee, and Bump Hedman. At lap 22 several cars got together in turn two. All righted themselves and continued, except Santee, who needed towed with apparent rear-end damage. Then Bob Dorman spun in turn one, also involving Pinckney, Brandon Groters, and Oakes. The fight for third had Eck taking the spot at lap 23 but Knight making a last lap pass to retake it at the finish. The top five were Blair, Urban, Knight, Eck, and Finnerty.
Blair continued his mastery of the Bonnell’s Auto Group RUSH Late Models, leading from the outside front row position and never receiving a serious challenge. Blair led pole-sitter Paul Norman, former champion Kyle Zimmerman, and Scott Gurdak through lap one. Lap two was the first caution when Khole Wanzer, Jacob Peterson, Branden Porter, and John Stockdale spun in turn two. On the restart Wanzer and Peterson made contact and Peterson again spun. On lap three Gurdak took over fourth then Norman spun from second a lap later. Blair, Zimmerman, Bossard, and Genco were the leaders when Alex Haight spun in turn four on lap five. At lap six Gurdak and Genco were side by side at the flag stand, running next to each other without contact through lap eight when Gurdak had the spot. Genco came back to take it back at ten laps, the halfway point. It was now Blair, Zimmerman, Genco, Gurdak, and Darrel Bossard. Zimmerman’s run ended when he came to a halt in turn one and needed towed from the rear of the machine. It was now Blair, Genco, Gurdak, Bossard, and Breyton Santee at the front. Andy Boozel replaced Santee for fifth at lap thirteen. Haight again spun at turn four on lap fourteen then Bossard spun from fourth with five to go but didn’t stop, elevating Boozel and Santee to fourth and fifth. The final order was Blair, Genco, Gurdak, Boozel, and Santee.
The Waterford Hotel Outlaw E-Mods were paced by June 30 winner Mike Kinney and John Boyd. Boyd led lap one over Kinney, Mike McGee, Steve Sornberger Jr, and Randy Hall. Points leader Gary Eicher was fifth at two laps and fourth at three laps. On lap four Sornberger and Dan Sasso spun in turns one and two. At seven laps Garrett Calvert and Zach Johnson were the spinners in turn one. Up front it was now Kinney, Boyd, McGee, Eicher, and Steve Rex. Hall slowed in turn four at lap eight with damage to the rear. McGee came to second at lap nine and Sasso came back into the top five. At thirteen Zach Johnson got sideways and stalled the car, not able to restart until the yellow was shown. Sornberger spun again at lap fourteen, this time in turn three. On green Sasso promptly spun in turns one and two. Garrett Calvert headed pitside with a flat right front tire. The race went smoothly from there to the checkers with Kinney winning his second of the year over Boyd, McGee, Eicher, and Greg Johnson.
Douglas Eck and Carl Marcy brought the Curtze Food Service Street Stocks to green with points leader and past champion Chris McGuire starting sixth. Marcy led lap one over Steve Yokum, Eck, McGuire, and defending champion John Boardman. At two laps McGuire was second and Boardman was fourth. Yokum took the lead at lap three over McGuire with Marcy back to third. Chris Fenno spun in turn two at four laps. When green again flew Bill Applebee and Joe Rohrer spun at turn one. The order at the front remained the same until lap five when Eck got back by Boardman for fourth as Rohrer slowed to a stop in turn three with front end damage. Boardman was back to fourth at six and was next to Marcy for third at lap seven. At halfway it was McGuire, Yokum, Boardman, Marcy, and Eck. On lap fourteen Eck got back to fourth. The order of the finish was McGuire for the fifth time this season, Yokum, Boardman, Eck, and Marcy.
Jarrit Young and Kyle Miller brought the Johnson’s Car Care and Collision Economod feature to green with Miller leading from the start over Young, defending champion Matt Alexander, Kyle Layton, and Nate Young. In turns three and four on lap two Alexander spun and was hit twice but kept going. Yellow was thrown with Nate Young having damage on the right rear. At three laps Justin Clark spun in turns one and two. The order for restarting was Miller, Nate Young, Jarrit Young, Kyle Reinwald, and Layton. Layton got to third at four laps. At lap seven Gary Olson spun in turn four. The halfway order was Miller, Nate Young, Layton, Reinwald, and Jarrit Young. Olson spun again at lap nine, then spun on the restart but kept going and headed for the pits. Alexander came back into the top five at lap twelve then, also on twelve, Jarrit Young got into the front straight wall. At the finish it was Miller for the fifth time this season, over Nate Young, Layton, Reinwald, and Alexander.
Chris Horton came from fifth to first on the first lap of the L & D Tree Service Challenger feature with June 9 winner Zack Eller second over Lane Reinwald, Tyler Walters, and Joe Mason. Lane Reinwald and Tyler Walters were side by side for second and fifteenth-starting Dillon Speer was up to fifth at lap three. Reinwald held second at lap four. When five laps were in the books Nick Steiner stopped in turn two. Walters, Reinwald, and Horton were three wide after the green with Walters leading at six laps and the battle for second still Horton and Reinwald, side by side. Horton took over second at lap eight. Joe Richter stopped on the back straight then for another caution. At lap nine Reinwald was gushing steam from the front of his mount and headed for the infield. The final restart saw Walters still leading with Speer now second over Horton, Eller, and Brandon Huffman. Speer took over the lead at the green, leading Walters, Horton, Eller, and Huffman to the checkers.
Next Sunday it will be an all open-wheel night featuring the return of the Patriot Sprint Group, the RUSH Sprints, the Waterford Hotel E-Mods, and the Johnson’s Car Care and Collision Economods.
