Shady Bowl Finally Beats Weather
4 min readDeGraff OH: In a season long battle with inclement weather Shady Bowl Speedway finally got in its third race of the season. The rural oval has had seven programs cancelled this season.
It was Neal Sceva Memorial Night as the track honored the many time champion with a tribute race. The Amsoil Street Stocks were selected to run the race, a 51 lapper paying $1551 to win. It turned out to be a great race, with competion at evey turn. It turned out to be a crowd pleaser as the top three cars battled as fast qualifier Josh Sage, Joshua Poore and Rodney Roush traded paint and positions. The lap count showed two laps to go when apparently Poore and Sage made contact as Roush watched. The end result saw Poore crashed and headed for the trailer. Sage powered his Harrod’s Septic Solutions sponsored to the win followed by Roush, Jacob Heckman, Rob Schaeff and Chad Small II. Poore won the heat, with Roush taking the dash.
The Wootens Modified were on hand with Germantown’s Bill Burba leading all the way in his Platinum Express open wheeler. The win was his second in a row. Chris Parker, fast qualifier Logan McPherson, Kyle Purvis and Daniel McPherson filled out the top five slots. Chris Parker won the dash, with Buddy Townsend taking the heat checker.
The Indiana based Thunder Roadsters made their first of two stops at the Bowl. Gregg Cory of Shelbyville IN pushed his NAPA sponsored open wheeler to the feature win trailed across the finish line by Brad Kindle, Phil Jenkins and Bob Lemmon
Hoosier driver Frankie Oakes made the tow over to run in the Heath and Sons Farms Thunder Cars. The Cambridge IN driver dominated the feature taking home the checker for the feature. Scottie Marquis, Joe Carroll, Craig Borland and Patrick Woods trying to run him down.
The Noble Armor Coating Mini Stocks took over the oval for their feature next. The race was marred by several crashes that left battered race cars everywhere. No injuries to drivers but several cars were damaged heavily. When the dust had cleared Jeremy “Worm” Niswonger was in victory lane for the second time this season. Niswonger was really set up, as his The Pines backed ride was the class of the field. Heat winner Jimmie Huffman was second, with Austin Eaton third, Andrea Swink fourth and Matt Kessler fifth. Damien Weigel was a heat winner with David Young winning the dash.
The speedway hosted a 100 lap enduro to raise funds for victims of the tornadoes that swept thru the Dayton and Trotwood areas last month. The action was all over as 16 cars started. Daytons Tyler Mahaffey in his Quick Parts backed ride won the event. Bobby Klien was second as he and Mahaffey were the only ones on the lead lap. Jay Lakins Jr. was third, Isiah Markley fourth and Dwayne Swink fifth. The race raised $725.00 which will be used to buy food and staple items.
This Saturday the track will host Dayton Auto Racing Fan Club members. Members will be admitted for half price. The Dave Nagel Excavating Late Models, The Wooten Automotive Modifieds, The Amsoil Street Stocks and the Noble Armor Coating Mini Stocks will be on hand.
