4 min readSTRONGSTOWN, PA (May 11, 2018) – Uniontown’s Michael Lake celebrated his 17th birthday by winning the 25-lap Spring Time Spectacular for the Townsend Gas & Oil Super Late Models at Dog Hollow Speedway Friday night. Also earning wins on opening night were John Redshaw (AMSOIL Pure Stocks), Max Blair (RUSH Crate Late Models), Nate Smith (358 Semi Lates), Levi Spinneweber (Super 6) and Eric Boozel (DM Craig Fabrication & Welding 4 Cylinders).
Michael Lake led the first five laps of the Townsend Gas & Oil Super Late feature. A restart on lap five saw Dave Blazavich out run Lake into turn one to take over the top spot. Blazavich looked like he was on his way to victory as he and Lake opened up some daylight over Dan Angelicchio. Lake stayed with Blazavich and on lap 22 went to the high side in turns three and four to take the lead. The young man, who turned 17 today, led the final three laps for the $1500 win. Blazavich held on for second over Angelicchio, Robbie Black, Max Blair, Joe Petyak, Doug Glessner, Tom Decker, Jr. Scott Stein and Rick Lias. Heats were won by Glessner and Angelicchio.
Joe Moyer led the opening lap of the RUSH Crate Late Models. He was passed on lap two by Bryan Benton. Benton led the next ten laps holding off Titusville’s Max Blair until lap 12. Blair was finally able to get by and went on to take the checkered flag. Benton was second ahead of Troy Shields, John Over and Colin Casale. Sixth through tenth were Andy Spooner, Russell Baird, Clate Copeman, Chris Frank and Brandon Lott. Heat winners were Shields and Copeman.
A 30 car field saw Mt. Union’s Eric Boozel pass Kolton Wagner on lap three and never look back to claim the 20- lap DM Craig Fabrication & Welding 4 Cylinder feature. Boozel and Wagner waged a good battle until Wagner exited the race. Noah Swank came home second followed by Bill Eckenrode, Brad Lemonovich, David Needham, Dave Gacka, Todd Davis, Chris Knight, Dave Smail and Ben LeHane. Taking heat wins were John Costa, Boozel and Brady Miller.
John Redshaw, of Uniontown, made his first visit to Dog Hollow unforgettable as he claimed the win in the 15-lap AMSOIL Pure Stock feature. Redshaw passed his buddy EJ Rozak on lap ten to led the final six laps for the win. Rozak was second over Duke Davidson, Mike Benton, Chris Wolfe and Brandon Doland. Davidson won the lone heat.
Frank McFeaters led the first seven laps of the Super 6 Late Models. A yellow on lap seven saw McFeaters put back two spots for jumping. This handed the lead over to heat winner Levi Spinneeweber who raced home to the win. Curtis Stivason, Mike Spinneweber, McFeaters and Jim Thompson were the top five.
Nate Smith won the 358 Semi Late feature in a wild finish that saw the race rain shortened on lap 15 of the 20 lap event. Smith led the opening lap only to spin out in turn two. Bernie Whiteford took over the lead at this point. Whiteford was out front laps 2 to 14 as he and Robert Cossell dueled for the number one spot. The pair came up on lapped traffic, and as they came down the front shoot, they tangled spinning both out. This handed the lead over to Smith. Under the caution the rain hit halting the action with Smith declared the winner after 14 laps were competed. Luke Barnett was second over Shane Nihart, Nick Fulmer, and Earl French. Completing the top ten were Vern Ward, Gary Stritt, Ryan Caldwell, Josh Whetstone and Garth Fochler. Cossell and Smith were the heat winners.
