Elkins Raceway Prepares For 71ST Anniversary Season
2 min readAfter an off-season filled with track improvements, and a thorough spring-cleaning of other
facilities, the staff and management of Elkins Raceway is ready for the track’s 71st Anniversary of short-
track racing. A successful “Test-N-Tune” night was held Saturday, April 29, in anticipation of this week’s
Opening Night, which readied both race teams and the track’s personnel for another full season of
“Thunder in the Mountains”.
This season’s classes and sponsors include the Budweiser Super Late Models, TKS
Contracting/High Point FASTRAK Crate Late Models, Holbrook on the Hill UMP Modifieds, Cordial
Logistics EDGE Hot Mods, Dirt Street Stocks, and two age-groups of Mini-Wedges.
Defending track champions Shane Hitt (Late Models), Brent Trimble (FASTRAK), Phil Jeffries
(UMP Mods), Josh Simpson (Hot Mods), Kevin Keene (Street Stocks), Brad Currance (Older Mini-
Wedges) and Adley Green (Young Mini-Wedges) are all expected to be on hand to add to their laurels.
Racing is scheduled every Saturday evening through the end of August, with several special events
for each class already planned, including the Skidmore Memorial, and the annual Wall-of-Fame induction,
with other additions possible throughout the season. Also, the Elkins Raceway Kids Club will be active
weekly with prizes and activities for fans age 10-under. Not to be overlooked, the track’s concession
stand will be open throughout each evening, continuing the tradition of the best race-track food available
anywhere.
Pit gates will open at 4 PM Saturday ($30 admission); General Admission gates open at 5 PM ($15
admission); hot-lap/qualifying for all classes will begin at 7:30. Raceday information can be obtained on
the track’s Facebook page or by calling (304)636-3339 after 4 pm. The season’s schedule, along with
results, point standings, and other driver & fan info will be posted on elkinsraceway.com.
All-in-all, it adds up to another exciting season of racing action at one of the area’s longest-
operating racing facilties. Let’s get out and fill the hillside and enjoy the weekly “Thunder in the Mountains!”
