Carpenter, Burdette, Garrett & Wise Claim Skyline Features
3 min readGUYSVILLE – With rain showers popping up all around them, Mother Nature spared the Skyline Speedway Saturday night as they were able to complete a full show with nearly 70 cars in the pits. A rainbow even appeared in the pit area at one time but the weather would not prove to be a factor as it was a beautiful evening with temperatures around 70 for the second race of the season on the 3/10th mile oval. On the track the competition was stout as there were four different winners from the week before.
Tyler Carpenter claimed the 25-lap late model feature but it was anything but a cake walk for the Parkersburg fan favorite who just one week ago was racing a Nascar Craftsman Series truck on the dirt at Bristol Motor Speedway. Carpenter started the feature in fifth and quickly moved into second place after a battle between fast qualifier Michael Lake and his father Freddy Carpenter resulted in contact between the two allowing Tyler to gain a pair of positions. From there he set his sights on race leader Tyler Evans, who had led from the opening lap. With Evans approaching the back of the field Carpenter made a great move to the outside to use the car of George Klintworth as a pick to grab the lead away from Evans.
Once in front Carpenter never looked back as he pulled away from the field to capture his first feature win of the season at Skyline. Evans held on for second with Freddy Carpenter, Lake and Logan Hitt rounding out the top five. It was the second win in two weeks for the Carpenter clan at Skyline after Freddy took the win last week in the season opener.
The modified feature took on a similar theme as a favorite had to come from behind to take the win.
K.C. Burdette started in the same fifth place position as Carpenter did and also quickly made his way to the front. By lap number 10 Burdette had worked his way into the runner-up spot behind Coleman Evans.
On a restart Burdette went to the high side of Evans to take the lead but the caution flagged waved again negating his pass for the lead. On the very next restart Burdette made the same exact move and this time it worked as the Parkersburg native went high to take he lead and was never seriously challenged the rest of the way. Veteran racer Mark Dickson worked his way up to second from his seventh-place starting spot but could not make a run at Burdette before settling for a strong second. Evans who was involved in a caution after being passed by Burdette rallied all the way from the back of the field to finish third while last week’s winner Kyle Bond and Jeremy Blake rounded out the top five.
In the sport mod class it was the veteran Pat Garrett claiming the win as the Newport native led wire to wire in his familiar No. 3 machine to claim his first win of the season. Garrett celebrated the birth of his sixth grandchild earlier in the week with the win with last week’s winner Reed Bishop finishing second followed by Joey Chambers, Jeff Gilman and front row starter Blake Sheets.
In the four-cylinder feature it would be Chris Wise taking the win over last week’s feature winner and fast qualifier Chris Dyer with Eric Kidder, Randy Wise and Zach Kidder rounding out the top five.
Skyline will be off this week but will return with a full schedule of racing on Saturday, April 29t
