Optimism Surrounds New Season at West Virginia Motor Speedway, Opener Sat. April 22nd!
4 min read(Mineral Wells, WV) – With just twenty nine days left until the start of the 2023 event season at West Virginia Motor Speedway anticipation is growing for the high speed ovals 2023 return. WVMS which rebooted in 2021 after sitting idle since 2012 continues its courageous efforts to stay open amidst things like a declining economy, Covid struggles and the new era of racing which has ushered in costs that have restricted local race teams.
However, a determined effort will see the gates swing open again in 2023 as fans mark the calendars to see some of the states biggest events. Super Late Models, Sprint Cars, Motorcycles and more will be on display this season as each take their turn in the ‘speed-seeking spotlight’ of the states showplace, West Virginia Motor Speedway.
Last summers noted pause to catch its breath and regroup has brought added anticipation and promise to the ‘Speedplant’ schedule heading into 2023. The season slate will debut some exciting new events and fresh ideas to the prestigious dirt track.
Between new events is the highly anticipated return of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series on June 2nd & 3rd that features the biggest names in Super Late Model visiting for two days of dirt racing including the $50,000 to win Saturday finale! Two time and defending champion Jonathan Davenport will return as he eyes a LOLMDS title run in 2023. Tim McCreadie, Devin Moran, Hudson O’Neal, Ricky Thorton Jr and more will look to dethrone the Blairsville, GA native who’s run roughshod over the Speedplant since reopening.
Joining the Jan Dils Attorneys at Law “Historic 100” Weekend will be the SCDRA Northeast Compact tour set to compete for $12,000 to win with the JWE Remodeling & Roofing ‘Northeast Nationals’! The series richest event of 2023 looks to showcase over 60+ cars from over a dozen states.
Kicking off the 2023 schedule is a new twist on the opener with the McClinton Chevrolet “Fill The Hill” Family Night. It’s the first opener to be held on a Saturday night and for the first time since reopening six divisions will take to the ‘Showplace of Speed’ in hopes to send it to victory lane in front of the lawn chair faithful. Super Late Models, UMP Modifieds, Street Stocks, EDGE Hotmods, Sport Mods & FWD 4Cylinders will each earn elite paydays on Saturday April 22nd as WVMS is asking all area teams and fans to help “Fill The Hill” in support of the Speedplant. On Saturday and Sunday May 6th & 7th the track will play host to as many as 200+ vendors for the first ‘Interstate Trade Days’ event to be held. Admission is FREE for the public to browse the regions finest artisans, crafts, food vendors and more throughout the main pit area.
The FAST on DIRT 410 Sprint Cars make their sole appearance at the speedway on Sunday May 28th competing for $10,000 to win shootout. The always popular winged sprints will once again visit to battle at speeds over 140mph along side the Super Late Model division racing for $12,000 to win as an epic tune-up for the Historic 100. USMPA Sport Mods will also see action seeking a cool five grand to win in the biggest purse in the region for the division. All the action of Sunday’s spectacular is sure to ramp up the anticipation as a prequel to the Lucas Oil Late Model Series, Jan Dils Attorneys at Law Historic 100 later in the week on June 2nd & 3rd!
The countdown will then turn to the highly awaited arrival of the Progressive American Flat Track Motorcycles as they return for a truly daredevil style of side by side activity on Saturday July 1st. The West Virginia Half-Mile is sure to supply plenty of fireworks as the national American Flat Track series rolls into town for the first time in over a decade with a whole new persona featuring the best flat track riders in the world and a booming brand that’s captivating TV’s across the globe.
