Ron Compton Memorial Is Next Up for Latrobe Speedway
2 min readLATROBE, PA (July 19, 2022) – Another big race for the K2 Engineering Crate Late Models takes precedent this coming Saturday, July 23, at Latrobe Speedway. The Inaugural Ron Compton Memorial will highlight the evening’s card and it will also be Mid Season Championship night.
Ron was a long time competitor at the track when it was known as Schmucker’s Speedway. His family, along with promoter’s Dennis and Kathy Bates, will run a race to honor one of the top runners at the track. His son Jeff also competed at Latrobe back in the early 2000’s picking up wins in the pure stock class. So, there is a long history of the Compton families involvement at the half mile speedplant.
The family raised a lot of money to add to the purse and the winner of the race will receive a paycheck of $1465. The top eight positions will have additional money added to it by the family. 65 representing Ron’s car number. The heat winners will each get $65, $100 for the hard charger and there is $1420 in lap money. Breakdown for the lap money looks like this, laps 1-3 $65, 4 $70, 5-14 $65, 15-17 $100, 18-19 $65 and lap 20 $75.
Thanks to Tim Etling the Stone & Co Modified 4 Cylinders will also run for some extra cash and will have a guest flagman on the stand for this race. Tim has given the track $350 to spread through the top five. The winner will be getting a hefty pay of $425 for their 12-lap event with second through five looking like this, $275, $210, $175 and $140. Joining Denny Carson on the stand will be former dirt and asphalt driver Bobby Henry. Just like the Compton family, the Henry family has a history of the early years of the speedway. Bobby’s older brother, the late Gary Henry, was a top runner at Schmuckers.
Joining the K2 Engineering Crate Late Models and Stone & Co Modified 4 Cylinders will be the Special T Metals Pro Stocks, Joe’s Body Shop Pure Stocks, Seal Tite Strictly Stock 4 Cylinders and the Vintage Modifieds.
