The Season Of First Time Winners At PPMS
10 min readThe Falconiās Moon Township Automotive 410 Outlaw Winged Sprint Car Series would make its second appearance of the season on Saturday night at Dirtās Monster Half-Mile. With fall-like weather in the air, PPMS would see qualifying, seven heat races, and eight feature events which included two makeup features from May 21. Dan Kuriger (08), from Rochester, would come from his fourth-place starting spot to pass Carl Bowser (11) and take home the win for the 410 Sprints. Michael Norris (N1), from Sarver, would pick up the win for the Rohrich RUSH Dirt Late Models, while Frank Magill (05), from Jefferson Hills, would get the win for the Cheplic Packing Hobby Stocks. Cody Koteles (1K), from Stockdale, would get his first career win for the Penn Ohio Pro Stocks, and AJ Poljak (36), from Baldwin, would win the makeup feature for the Pro Stocks. Bill Tennant (2), from Colliers, West Virginia, would get another win in the Crawford Auto Repair Four-Cylinder feature, and Susie Rudolph (55), from Steubenville, Ohio, would get her first career Crawford Auto Repair Four-Cylinder win when she won the makeup feature. Tyler Hollister (44T), from McDonald, would also get his first career win for the All Ways Safe Flagging and Traffic Control Young Guns.
The last time the Falconiās 410 Outlaw Winged Sprints were at PPMS, George Hobaugh (40), from Chicora, got the win. On Saturday night, he also set the fast time in qualifying with a time of 17.719. Carl Bowser (11), from Freeport, was right behind him with a time of 17.790. Brandon Matus (13), from Wampum, and Sean Rayhall (14), from Bowling Green, Ohio, were the only other 410 Sprint Car drivers with times in the 17-second range. The 410 Sprints were broken into two heat races with the entire first heat redrawing for the feature. Rayhall (14) would get the pole position with Bowser (11) starting to his outside in second. 17-year-old Gray Leadbetter (28), from Morganton, North Carolina, would start third, and Kuriger (08) would start fourth. When the green light turned on for their 20-lap feature, Bowser (11) would take off with the early lead. Lap three had Rayhall (14) in second, Kuriger (08) in third, and Matus (13) in fourth with Bowser (11) leading the charge. Kuriger (08) would move up to second on lap four with Bowser (11) now having a half straightaway lead over the field. By lap nine, lapped traffic would come into play for the front-runners which allowed Kuriger (08) to close the gap on Bowser (11). Kuriger (08) would take over the lead around the 13th frame and with the event going green to checkered in record fashion, he would bring home his first PPMS 410 Winged Sprint Car win of the season. He was followed by Bowser (11) in second, Rayhall (14) in third, Matus (13) fourth, and Hobaugh (40) would complete the top five. The heat race winners were Hobaugh (40) and Weaver (35W).
A 20-lap feature was up next for the Rohrich RUSH Dirt Late Models and Tom Klein (77), from Rochester, would start on the pole. Ben Policz (14B), from Rices Landing, would start to the outside in second place. Mike Reft (9R) from Pittsburgh would start third, and Norris (N1) would complete the second starting row. When the green flag dropped, a three-wide battle for the lead would take place as the field thundered into turn one. Coming out with the early lead was Policz (14B) with Norris (N1) in second, and last weekās winner, Phillip Bubeck (4) in third. By lap five, Policz (14B) had extended his lead over the field to a half straight away. Three laps later, Policz (14B) would enter lapped traffic as did Norris (N1). The lapped traffic would allow Norris (N1) to close the gap on Policz (14B) and then Policz (14B) was able to increase his lead as Norris (N1) got hung up in the lapped cars. It looked like Policz (14B) was on his way to picking up another win, however, the eventās lone caution would come on lap 17. Policz (14B) would take the outside on the restart with Norris (N1) to his inside. When green replaced yellow, Norris (N1) would take over the lead. He would lead the final three laps en route to his first PPMS Rohrich RUSH Dirt Late Model win of the season. āDirt racing is like waves, you ride them up, and you ride them down, hopefully, this is us riding them up,ā said Norris in his post race interview. Policz (14B) finished second, Tim Shaffer (45) third, Bubeck (4) fourth, and Tony Musolino (42) rounded out the top five. The heat race winners were Norris (N1) and Reft (9R).
In the Cheplic Packing Hobby Stock feature, Frank Magill (05) would start on the pole. His brother Tony (5) would start next to him in second place. Gary Koteles (65K), from Stockdale, would start third, and Danny Rich (221K), from Imperial, would start fourth. At the start, G. Koteles (65K), F. Magill (05), and T. Magill (5) would go three-wide through turns one and two with F. Magill (05) coming out with the lead. The first caution would come on lap six when the 39F of Tyler Fox spun out in turn four. F. Magill (05) would take the outside on the restart and he had G. Koteles (65K) to his inside. F. Magill (05) was able to keep his lead over the field and they would complete four laps before the next caution. F. Magill (05) and G. Koteles (65K) would again lead the restart and they would stay one and two. The next caution would come on lap 11 and under that caution, G. Koteles (65K) would enter the pits with car trouble which allowed Matt Benard (15) to move up to second. F. Magill (05) would again keep his lead over the field, and despite one last late-race caution, he was able to hold on to pick up the win. He was followed to the line by Benard (15) in second, Logan Koteles (64K) in third, Fox (39F) in fourth, and T. Magill (5) in fifth. The heat race winners were G. Koteles (65K) and Benard (15).
The Penn Ohio Pro Stocks would have two feature events with the first one being a makeup feature from May 21. In the 12-lap makeup feature, Cody Koteles (1K) would start on the pole with AJ Poljak (36) starting in second. When the green flag waved, C Koteles (1K) would keep the early lead. Lap five had C. Koteles (1K), Poljak (36), and Brian Huchko (60H) running one, two, and three. The eventās lone caution would come on lap six and on the restart, Poljak (36) and C. Koteles (1K) would battle for the lead. Poljak (36) would take over the lead on lap eight and he would lead the remaining four laps picking up his first PPMS Penn Ohio Pro Stock win of the season. He was followed by Huchko (60H) in second, C. Koteles (1K) in third, Heath Close (77H) in fourth, and F. Magill (05) in fifth.
In the Penn Ohio Pro Stock 15-lap regular feature, Huchko (60H) and F. Magill (05) would make up the front starting row while C. Koteles (1K) and Poljak (36) made up the second row. When their green flag dropped, it appeared Huchko (60H) was going to come away with the early lead, but C. Koteles (1K) had the lead at the line on lap one. Lap three had C. Koteles (1K) leading, Huchko (60H) in second, and Poljak (36) in third. Poljak (36) would pass Huchko (60H) for second by lap six and the eventās only caution would come on lap 10. C. Koteles (1K) would choose the inside on the restart and he would retain his lead over the field. He would lead all laps of the race en route to his first career Penn Ohio Pro Stock win. He was followed by Poljak (36) in second, Huchko (60H) in third, Close (77H) in fourth, and F. Magill (05) in fifth. The heat race winner was C. Koteles (1K).
The Crawford Auto Repair Four-Cylinders would also run a regular feature and a makeup feature. In the makeup feature, Craig Rudolph (5R) would start on the pole with his daughter Susie (55) starting to the outside. At the start, Susie (55) would take off with the lead. She would lead all four laps of the event beating her dad and also picking up her first career Crawford Auto Repair Four-Cylinder win.
In the regular eight-lap feature for the Crawford Auto Repair Four-Cylinders, April Tennant (2A) would start on the pole. Travis Corbin (2R) would start in second, while Susie Rudolph (55) would start in third, Bill Tennant (2) would start in fourth, and Craig Rudolph (5R) would complete the five-car field. The field would complete one lap before the first caution was out and on the restart, A. Tennant (2A) would keep her lead. B. Tenant (2) would move up to second on lap two and another caution would come on lap three. The husband and wife team of the 2 and 2A would lead the restart with husband Bill taking over the lead when the field came back under green. He would lead the remaining laps of the event to pick up another win. Corbin (2R) finished second, A. Tennant (2A) third, S. Rudolph (55) fourth, and C. Rudolph (5R) fifth. The Four-Cylinders did not run a heat race.
The All Ways Safe Flagging and Traffic Control Young Guns eight-lap feature had Zoey Knight (78Z) starting on the pole while Gavin Kokolis (91) would start in second. Sumara Weaver (11W) would start third, Travis Hollister (44T) would start fourth, and Emmerson Laboon (114) would start in fifth. When the green light turned on, Knight (78Z) would keep the early lead and she would lead the first few laps. However, Hollister (44T) would take over the lead on lap three. Hollister (44T) would lead the remaining five laps of the event which ran green to checkered. Hollister (44T) would pick up his first career All Ways Safe Young Guns win. He was followed to the line by Knight (78Z) in second, Weaver (112W) in third, Kokolis (91) in fourth, and Laboon (114) in fifth. The Young Guns did not run a heat race.
