Deneen Claims Bedford Charlie Walter Memorial
3 min readChuck Clise roared to the 25 lap Late Model win Friday night at Bedford Speedway. The win was Clise’s seventh career victory at the track, worth $2000
While Clise’s win came in the Late Model event, the featured attraction of the night was the Charlie Walter memorial, the longest and most prestigious Pure Stock race of the year. Kyle Deneen emerged from some mid race drama to claim that 42 lap event. Mike Altobelli Jr easily took the Emod race before James Fairall returned to win another 4 Cylinder finale.
Front row starters Nathan Lasalle and Travis Stickley brought the Late Model field to the green with Lasalle grabbing the early lead. Stickley was all over Lasalle for the first few laps as Chuck Clise rolled in. Clise took Stickley on lap 6 and squeezed by Lasalle a lap later, then never looked back as the race went all green.
Stickley continued to battle Lasalle, now for second, until joined by Jeff Rine. In a wild three wide move on lap 10, Rine took them both and set out after Clise. A lap later, Jim Bernheisel took to the outside to sweep by the pair and set out after Rine.
But this time Stickley finally got by Lasalle and engaged in a race long battle with Bernheisel. Over the last ten laps, Rine could not close on Clise who took the win without pressure. Bernheisel fought off Stickley. Lasalle took fifth. Lasalle and Clinton Hersh won the heats.
Mike Altobelli went from sixth to first on the first EMod lap and then ran off from the field, Dan Cornman and Beau Aikey waged a race long battle for second with Aikey taking the spot on lap 10.
But nobody challenged Altobelli who raced to the easy win. Aikey, Jonathan Taylor, Cornman and David Green were the top 5.
Barry Clark was the early leader in the Pure Stock 42 lapper. He held on through several early caution periods, but with each passing break the crowd at the front grew. The stage was set when Kyle Deneen made it up to second position on lap 12.
Five laps later, Clark, Deneen and third place runner Derek Hinish all got together in turn three, a move which scattered the close running field. Clark went around and Deneen suffered a good bit of damage but did not stop, while several others dropped out of the event.
From that point on, Deneen held off constant challenges from Hinish. Dalton Weyant maneuvered into third late but finished there ahead of Charlie Clise and Corey Weaver. Dakota Foor and Deneen won the heats.
James Fairall returned after a lengthy absence and picked up where he left off with anothre 4 Cylinder win. He went from sixth to first on the first lap and never looker back. Dalton Long chased Fairall for the distance before finishing second ahead of Dustin Kinser, Jay Talley and Todd Price. Fairall and Ernie Hewitt won the heats.
