Late Race Action Gives Martin, Caskey, Loney, Alexander & Bruce Wayne County Opening Night Checkers
8 min readBy Mike Swanger
The earliest ever opening night at Wayne County Speedway had over 100 cars jammed into the pits on a cool Saturday night but the action was hot with late race action giving the crowd a very good show as the O’Reilly’s Auto Parts’ Race to the Championship’ points started. Tyler Street grabbed the lead at the drop of the green for the Pine Tree Towing & Recovery Sprints and would build up a sizable gap from Broc Martin. As Street got into lap traffic, he rubbed tires with a slower car closing out lap 8 but continued on with the top spot. A lap nine caution for debris would bunch the field back together but Street would pull away again as Martin ran second with Jordan Ryan, Henry Malcuit and Jason Dolick battled for third. Running near perfect laps, Street once again closed in on a couple of slower cars and this time it was costly on lap 18 as the two slower cars got loose and Street made contact in turn three and spun out, costing him the lead and went tail. This would give Martin the lead and the Shreve driver would bring the Orrville Trucking, Chaser’s DriveThru & Santmyer Oil #83m into the Summit Racing victory circle. On the lap 18 restart, Malcuit would power past Ryan for second but could not catch up to Martin to make a challenge for the win. Ryan would hang on to third followed by Dolick and Chris Myers as he and Jamie Myers won the heats. Lee Jacobs was set the fast time of 14. 904 seconds
When Doug Drown starts on the front row of the Malcuit Tavern Super Late Model feature, everyone figures on it to be the race for second and it started out that way again. Drown would jump out to the lead and open up a gap on the field but early cautions would keep the field close. Mitch Caskey began to pressure Drown on the lap six restart with J R Gentry and 16th starting Ryan Markham in hot pursuit. Two laps later, Markham would take third as Caskey was working every line to get past Drown. Gentry’s car would stop running on lap 14 ending his night. With the race back to green, Caskey got past Drown only to have Drown reclaim the lead the next circuit with Caskey returning to the point on the next lap. At that point, Drown started having issues with his car as Markham took over second and kept the pressure on Caskey. Wes Morrison, who was never lower than 7th during the race, moved past Drown for third with five to go. As the checkered flag waved, Caskey and his Orrville based Dan Weaver Trucking, JoyRide Transport and A & K Welding #18 held off Markham’s last challenge for the win. Morrison finished third ahead of Drown and Justin Chance, who was quick timer at 17.071 seconds. Heat wins went to Drown and Caskey.
Colton Shaw and Jason King would bring the CORBON Ammunition Modifieds to the green flag as King would set the pace for the opening four laps before Shaw took over for one circuit as King reclaimed it on the next lap. During those first six laps, 7th starting Kyle Moore and 16th starter Nathon Loney were on the move foward. Moore would take the top spot on lap seven with Loney working his way up. Shaw took second from King on lap eight with Nate Young knocking King back another place on the next lap with Loney into fifth. With Moore leading, Loney moved to third on lap 12 and he and Shaw would go side be side for second until lap 16 when Loney got loose in turn two and Shaw spun to avoid contact with Loney to bring out the caution. Loney would hang on to the runner up spot and when the green flag waved again would put the pressure on Moore. With both cars going into turn three for the final time, Loney was able to get to the inside of Moore and as the hit turn four, Moore slipped up the track and Loney was able to edge past to win bt a car length as the Danville driver parked the Rick’s Body Shop, Buckeye Auto Care and StopTech #10 in the Summit Racing victory circle. Mike Potosky raced his way into third with King and Young following. Potosky and Moore topped the heats.
The only feature of the evening that didn’t have a lead change was the McKenzie Concrete Super Stock as Wooster’s Chase Alexander would top every lap but had no room to spare at anytime. Took Wiles, Don Rutt and Kyle Moore all kept the heat on Alexander all race long. Wiles and Rutt battled Alexander for the lead the opening five laps when Moore got past both for second. The yellow flag would wave on lap nine and during that time, Moore’s right rear tire went flat sending him to the pits for new rubber. On the restart, Tyler Wiles threw his hat into the race as he raced his dad for second, right on Alexander’s bumper as 13th starter Matt Shroyer started to make his move into the top five. After a lap 12 caution, Alexander and his Dana’s Danes, Peter’s Chocolate Shop and Dawson Racing #15 was able to open up some space between the rest of the contenders and collect the win. During the final two laps, Shroyer slipped past Tyler Wiles for third and motored past Took Wiles for second on the last lap. Don Rutt filled out the top five as he and Moore won the heat races.
The wildest race of the night was with the JOYRIDE Transport Mini Stocks as their feature started with Dustin Bedlion using the pole position to set the pace for the first two laps before giving way to Doug Hensel. With the cars packed together and Hensel leading, his car slowed going down the back stretch and everyone swerving to get past, contact was made that sent Hensel flipping at the end of the staraight away and Anthony Collins went tumbling in turn three as both drivers got out okay. When the race going back to green, Bedlion inherited the lead back but Stephen Crowe would take over at the halfway mark with 18th starting Johnny Bruce Sr. into third. With two to go, Bruce Sr. driving the Atwater based Inside Line Raceway, Koran Restoration and Wiz Ink Tattoo’s #311,slipped past Bedlion for second and as the white flag waved overtook Crowe for the lead and go on to collect his first win ever at ‘Orrville’s Historic Oval’. Crowe would finish second as Mitch Reichard, Clayton Evans and Ryan Carder filled out the top five. Hensel and Bedlion collected the heat wins.
Pocketing the Rich;s Tire & Service Center Hard Charger Awards were Lee Jacobs (+5), Ryan Markham (+14), Nathon Loney (+15), Matt Shroyer (+11) and Johnny Bruce Sr. (+17).
