Hooks Wins Homak Penn-Ohio ProStocks At Eriez
7 min readHammett, PA (June 30, 2019) — Sunny summer weather greeted fans entering Eriez Speedway Sunday for the $1000 to win special for the Homak Penn Ohio Pro Stock Championship Series for the Curtze Food Service Street Stocks. At the end of the 25-lap feature it was Shaun Hooks taking the win. In other action former champion Jason Genco showed he still knows his way around Eriez Speedway, handily winning the Bonnell’s Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Model feature, Mike Kinney winning his first Waterford Hotel Outlaw E-Mod feature of the season, Kyle Miller picking up his third Johnson’s Car Care and Collision Economod win of the season, and Chris Horton getting his first Eriez win of 2019. The New Motors Super Late Models had the night off.
The $1000 to win Homak Penn Ohio Pro Stock Championship Series special for the Curtze Food Service Street Stocks started with Jason Fosnaught and Chris McGuire, a former Eriez Champion, on the front row. Fosnaught led to the back straight when McGuire took over. McGuire led Fosnaught, Daryl Charlier, Hunter Exley and Anthony Marotto in a tightly packed bunch to the end of lap one. Exley was third at two laps with Paul Davis up to fourth at lap three. Exley and Davis were even at the line at six laps for fourth then Charlier spun from second in turn four and was collected by Davis. McGuire and Fosnaught brought the field back to green with Fosnaught barely leading at lap seven. Yellow flew again at lap nine for the car of Douglas Eck, slow with a flat tire. One lap after green was again shown Exley spun from second in turn two with Rod Laskey managing to stop before colliding and Eck spinning to avoid involvement. Another yellow at lap thirteen was for a wreck among John Boardman, Zachary Gustafson, Eck, Charlier, and Kyle Couchenour, who needed towed form the scene. McGuire again led on the back straight after green. Then, after another caution for a car stopped in the infield, it was three wide for the lead with McGuire emerging out front. After a spin by Gustafson in turn two it was McGuire leading at lap twenty over B-Main 2 winner Bobby Whitling, Shaun Hooks, Jackson Humanic, and Fosnaught. Whitling and McGuire were neck and neck with Whitling slightly ahead at lap 21, then at 22 lap they got together with McGuire jumping over Whitling’s left front wheel, allowing Hooks to take over at the fore. A lap later Whitling got into the turn four wall and Tim Deutsch took a wild ride on the front straight wall. Humanic got to second at lap 23 with Exley third at the white flag. The top five wound up Hooks, Humanic, Exley, McGuire, and Fosnaught.
The Waterford Hotel Outlaw E-Mod feature started with Steve Rex and Mike Kinney leading the way to Mark Matthews’ green and Kinney grabbing the lead, a lead he would never relinquish. At the end of the first ‘go-round’ Kinney led Rex, Randy Hall, Steve Sornberger Jr, and John Boyd. At lap three Gary Eicher and Sornberger were side by side at the line for fourth with Eicher eventually gaining the spot. At seven complete the leaders had caught the rear of the field and began putting the backmarkers a lap down. A caution was shown at lap nine when a problem was discovered, possibly fuel leaking, from Calvin Thompson’s car. The track safety crew quickly remedied the issue and the race was put back in motion with Kinney, Rex, Hall, Boyd, and Eicher the top five. Hall got to second at the halfway point and made a challenge for the lead in turn two with twelve complete but was rebuffed. Casey Bowers was alongside Boyd, trying for fifth, at lap thirteen, securing it at fourteen. After a spin by Brandon Grossman at seventeen laps, just after Eicher got to second, the race went green to the checkers with Kinney picking up his first win of the season over Eicher, Hall, Rex, and Bowers.
The Johnson’s Car Care and Collision Economod feature started with Mike Boyd and Kyle Miller on the front row. Miller led from the start with Jason Brightman, Boyd, Garret Calvert, and Steve Simon giving chase until lap three when Gary Olson and Matt Alexander spun in turn four. A lap later Brightman spun in turn four with Alexander, Calvert, and Steve Simon getting involved. Calvert was the only one able to continue. At halfway it was still Miller leading with Boyd now second, Olson back up to third, Kyle Layton fourth, and Calvert fifth. At twelve complete Olson took over second place but Miller had a quarter lap lead as he cruised to his third win of the season. At the checkers it was Miller, Olson, Boyd, Layton, and Calvert.
Brian Larson and Bruce Hordusky led the Bonnell’s Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Models out of turn four to begin their twenty-lap finale. Hordusky led from the start with former champion Jason Genco, Khole Wanzer, former champion Kyle Zimmerman, and Cory Sines chasing. At five laps Genco had caught Hordusky but a spin by Josh Beckstrom in turn two allowed Hordusky to scoot out to lengthen his lead while Genco and Zimmerman fought over the runner-up spot, even at lap nine. At halfway it was Hordusky, Zimmerman, Genco, Wanzer, and Breyton Santee, up from eleventh on the grid. Santee was fourth at lap twelve when Brandon Porter spun. Genco had second all to himself at lap thirteen but Zimmerman again pulled even at fourteen with Scott Gurdak coming to fifth. Genco tried the inside route for the lead at lap sixteen but Hordusky held on. Then it was a three wide race for the lead among Hordusky, Genco, and Zimmerman with Genco emerging the leader over Zimmerman and Hordusky. At the checkers it was Genco, Zimmerman, Gurdak getting by Hordusky, and Santee.
The final event of the evening was for the L & D Tree Service Challengers with Jessica Harvey and Chris Horton bringing the race to green. Horton led from the start over Lane Reinwald, Brandon Huffman, Harvey, and Zack Eller. By the halfway point Tyler Walters had moved to fourth with Eller fifth. Huffman pulled to the infield from third at lap eight. At the checkers it was Horton for his first-ever win at Eriez over Reinwald, Walters, Eller, and Harvey.
