Four Repeat Winners At Raceway 7
7 min readConneaut, OH (June 28, 2019): One of the hotter days of the summer thus far, with the temperature hitting 87°, greeted racers and fans as they arrived at Raceway 7 for a regular five-star card of racing. The on-track action was even hotter with defending Evergreen Lake Park Campground RUSH Late Models champion Darrell Bossard strengthening his quest to repeat as champion by winning his second of the season, Mike Potosky gained ground in the points standings by winning his third consecutive Bonnell’s Collision Center feature, Paul Davis got his second consecutive win in the Campbell’s Mini Storage Street Stock finale, Nate Young collected his second-ever feature win in the Bonnell’s Auto Sales Economods, and former Sunnyside Farm Transit Mini Stock champion Jim Haefke edged closer to the points lead by winning his feature.
Feature race action started with the Bonnell’s Auto Sales Economods night capper with J J Bumetzrieder and Gary Murphy leading the way to Mark Osburn’s green flag but caution flew when Casey Harmon slowed in turn two. When the race got underway it was Mitchell Wright leading May 31 winner Nate Young, Brian Huchko, Matt Alexander, and defending class champion Eric Reinwald. At three laps Will Pinckney spun in turn two then the restart was negated when Matt Alexander was deemed to have “jumped” the start. One more lap was in when Kyle Adkins spun in turn one, involving Pinckney and Allen Phillips as well. The next lap saw the next caution, for Derek Connors spun in turn two. At halfway it was Wright still up front with Young second, Reinwald up to third, Huchko, and Alexander. Judson Fell spun at lap nine then on lap ten Reinwald and Alexander were racing side by side for position when Connors and Fell spun on turn two. After green Huchko spun from fourth place on turn two. Mike Harmon was the next caution, on turn four this time. Another side by side battle between Reinwald and Pinckney had them nearly even at the line at twelve laps. At thirteen laps Young relieved Wright of the lead and the yellow flew for the final time for Jarett Young. Pinckney got to fourth at the white flag lap. The final top finishers were Young, Wright, Alexander, Pinckney, and Reinwald. The points race has unofficially become a tie at the top of the standings between Young and Alexander at the midpoint of the season.
Bill Watson took the lead at the start of the Campbell’s Mini Storage Street Stock feature but Darr Diegelman spun from third on turn four, necessitating a complete restart as none of the field had completed the lap. When the race got going it was Watson leading lap one over Jamie Duncan, Mike Miller, Joe Stajnragh, and points leader Pat Fielding. On lap four Watson and Miller raced down the back straight with Miller taking over the lead when they got to turn two on lap four and last week’s winner Paul Davis joining the fight. Miller led Davis, Watson, Stajnragh, and Fielding on lap six while the two leaders were side by side at the line. At turn three on lap seven Davis was the leader, then lengthened his advantage to .656 second at the halfway point with Fielding getting by Stajnragh for fourth. Davis then lengthened his lead to 1.235 seconds a lap later. His lead vanished when Art Edwards spun at eleven laps. At the checkers it was Davis, Miller, Watson, Fielding, and Duncan.
Next up we’re the Bonnell’s Collision Center E-Mods with opening night winner Mike Kinney and Casey Bowers on the front row. Kinney led Bowers, Josh McDonald, points leader Gary Eicher, and Percy McDonald through lap one with McDonald and Eicher side by side for third at the end of two. Eicher had the position on the back straight on lap three. At lap four it was a side by side race for fourth between Josh and Percy McDonald. Percy McDonald had the spot at four complete and a lap later Josh McDonald headed for the infield with another broken driveshaft, the second week in a row. Dan McDonald then came to fifth. On lap nine Eicher and Bowers were side by side up the back straight but Eicher failed to make turn four, heading straight for the front stretch wall, luckily stopping prior to contact. He was able to restart, but was now thirteenth. For the restart it was Kinney, Bowers, Percy McDonald, two-time winner Mike Potosky, and Dan McDonald. On lap ten Potosky got to second on the back straight but fell back to third by the end of the lap. At halfway it was Kinney, Percy McDonald, Potosky, Bowers, and Dan McDonald. Percy McDonald and Bowers were nearly even at the line at with seven to go with McDonald getting the spot. At fifteen complete Potosky was second and then on lap sixteen he swept wide around Kinney through turns three and four, then went on to his third win in a row over Kinney, Percy McDonald, Bowers, and Dan McDonald. The margin of victory was 1.652 seconds.
Chad Sines and defending champion Darrell Bossard brought the Evergreen Lake Park Campground RUSH Late Models to green with Sines taking the immediate lead. The first yellow was when the race was seven laps complete when Jacob Peterson and Ron Boardman spun in turn two and Joe Howell spun in turn four. Sixth starting Bruce Hordusky Jr came to fourth at lap eight then Joe Watson spun in turn four. In turn two at eleven complete Brandon Porter spun in turn two and was hit hard by John Watson but both were able to continue. The next yellow was when Dennis Dellinger stopped at the pit entrance at thirteen. Bossard and former champion Kyle Zimmerman were side by side for second at lap fourteen while Sines was still leading and running an excellent race. With five to go it was Sines, Bossard, Zimmerman, Matt Latta, and Hordusky. Peterson again spun in turn two with three to go then Howell spun on the front straight prior to the green. Bossard mounted a strong challenge, but Sines was still holding the lead through eighteen and nineteen, when he led by .070 second. At the line it was Bossard by .586 second over Zimmerman, who also got by Sines in the waning laps, Latta, and Hordusky. In Victory Lane a very gracious Bossard complimented Sines on his excellent run.
The night capper was the Sunnyside Farms Transit Mini Stock feature with former champion Jim Haefke on the pole and Brandon Huffman to his right. Coming out of turn four Emily Stoyer and Kevin Watson got together with Stoyer, Watson, Zack Eller, and Joe Dewoody eventually all involved. With the track essentially blocked the red flag was shown. When the race got underway again Haefke led with Lane Reinwald and Huffman side by side fighting over second, former champion Joe Campbell fourth, and two time 2019 winner Mark Lawrence fifth. The cars of Joe Romanko, Corey Wick, Lawrence, Dewoody, Watson, and Zoey Gill all got together in turns one and two for the next caution. Gill was the only one able to continue. At halfway the order at the front was Haefke, Lawrence, Huffman, Jessica Harvey, and Reinwald. Joe Campbell came to fifth at lap seven. When the checkers fell it was Haefke for his first win of the year over Lawrence, Huffman, and Campbell, just narrowly getting by Harvey for fourth. With defending champion Dillon Speer not racing this week, the points leader is now Lawrence with Haefke second.
