Atomic Speedway’s Thursday Night Thunder Kicks Off Holiday Weekend
3 min readWhile some slow down to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend, Waverly Ohio’s Atomic Speedway has all systems set on go for a weekend full of racing, which will kick off a rare Thursday night Late Model special paying a cool $3,000 to win! The 2nd annual installment of “Thursday Night Thunder” promises to be an evening full of action, as the event will feature the Impact Race Gear Late Model ‘Throwback 30’ along with a $1,000 to win C&M Racing Equipment Sport Mod special plus an appearance by the Southern Ohio Legends Car division.
The 2018 running of the “Thursday Night Thunder” event saw an all-star caliber field of cars and that is expected to only grow come Thursday night, as track owner Brad McCown doubles down on a special that anticipates a who’s who field of Late Model standouts to be in attendance. With 7 different winners in the 7 different events thus far in 2019, the Late Model at Atomic Speedway has proven to be one of the most competitive in the region on a weekly basis. Now with contenders such as class points leader Tyler Carpenter and past feature winners Freddie Carpenter, Jackie Boggs and any combo of the Conley’s looking to break back into victory lane against an expected stout field of challengers, the Late Model show is billed as a “can’t miss” show!
Not only are Late Models expected to put on a show on the high banks, but the class will also “throwback” with a couple old school wraps. Both Freddie and Tyler Carpenter will invade the facility with 2 throwback cars themed as Mike Balzano and Steve Shaver. While other throwback aspects of the event include a $10 grandstand admission and a throwback t-shirt contest along with a crowd favorite ‘trophy girl’ fans will see nods to years past all throughout the evening!
While Late Models may take center stage, the C&M Racing Equipment Sport Mod division promises to deliver another dose its unique excitement, as the ultra-competitive class looks to keep the action rolling following this past Saturday’s intense shootout between eventual winner Matt Watson and James Dennis. Showcasing very strong car counts, an already intense points battle between Jamey Adams and Gary Griffith and one of their highest top placing prizes of the season, fans will want to keep their eye on Sport Mods Thursday night!
To round out the night, the Ohio Valley Legends Cars will do battle on the high banks of the Atomic Speedway. While not a regular class at Atomic Speedway, the class that is a “throwback” of its own, has put on some excellent races in past appearances and will not disappoint!
Thursday’s show will kick off with Gates Opening at 4:00 and Hot Laps set to begin at 6:30. Grandstand Admission is a “throwback” price of just $10 and fans are encouraged to take part in the ‘Throwback’ contests for the “coolest throwback” and “oldest Atomic Speedway” race shirts and possibly take home
some new swag of their own!
