Copeman, Ott, Koffler, Kenawell & Kaufman First Time Winners At Dog Hollow
5 min readSTRONGSTOWN, PA (August 11, 2018) – Clate Copeman, of Greensburg, picked up his first Townsend Gas & Oil Super Late Model feature of the season in only his fourth start since returning to the class. Steve Kenawell, Jr. won for the first time in the Laurel Highlands 305 Sprints. In the RUSH Crate Late Models Central City’s Michael Ott won his first-ever at DHS while Mahaffey’s Jon Lee won for the eighth time in the 358 Semi Lates. Amber Mills won her third in the AMSOIL Pure Stocks. West Lisenring’s Paul Koffler, III, Salix’s Brady Miller and Brooks Kaufman, of Fallentimber shared DM Craig Fabrication & Welding 4 Cylinder feature wins on Saturday night. Once again 100 cars packed the pit area for an action packed show.
Jon Lee race to his eighth straight feature win in the 358 Semi Late feature. Lee started on the pole after his redraw and Robert Cossell chased him all 18 laps but had to settle for second. He was followed by Josh Jacoby, Zac Myers, Nick Erskine, Nick Fulmer, Mike Shoemaker, Chad Helman, Joe Malobicky and Caleb Whiteford. Heat winners were Cossell and Lee.
Clate Copeman returned to the Townsend Gas & Oil Super Late Model wars just a month ago. Copeman was able to lead all 25-laps, in an event that had a few early cautions, to put his Battle Chassis in to victory circle for the first time since 2015. Scott Stein was runner up until Jon Lee passed him on lap 12 but could not catch the flying Copeman. Lee held on to second over Stein, Nate Smith, Curtis Teets, John Wayne Weaver, Tom Jobe, Tom Merryman, Shawn Claar and Doug Glessner. Grabbing heat wins were Claar and Stein.
The Laurel Highlands 305 Sprints made their third appearance of the season and it was East Freedom’s Steve Kenawell, Jr. taking his first-ever win at Dog Hollow in the 20-lap event. At the drop of the green it was Tyler Denochick leading the way for the first eight laps with Jonathon Jones in second. Sixth starting Kenawell worked his way past Jones on lap seven and then passed leader Denochick on lap nine. Kenawell led the final 12 laps to take the checker. Jones settled for second followed by Scott Lutz, Ryan Lynn, Ron Aurand, Reed Thompson, Randy Sterling, Dylan Shatzer and Kyle Ganoe. The Qualifying heats were won by Jones and Lutz.
Paul Koffler III makes a few trips a year to the Dog Hollow Speedway and Saturday he won for the first time in the DM Craig Fabrication & Welding 4 Cylinders. Koffler took advantage of his pole starting spot to lead all 12-laps to beat out Brady Miller, Dylan Young, Matt Weltz and Bill Eckenrode. Sixth through tenth were Dannie Mullen, Mike Potter, David Gacka, Larry Weltz and Brad Lemonovich. Miller, Matt Weltz and Brian Noel were heat winners.
The RUSH Crate Late Models saw Michael Ott score his first-ever Dog Hollow victory. Ott led from green to checker with Clate Copeman dogging him in second. Behind Ott and Copeman were Bob Schwartmiller, Joe Moyer and Bryan Benton. Mike Laughard won the lone heat.
Amber Mills led all 15 laps and beat out Brad Benton for her third AMSOIL Pure Stock main event of the season. Greg Blystone was third ahead of Jim Decker and Marc Whetstone, Sr. Completing the top ten were Brandon Doland, Sam McAdams, Makinna Pearce, Bill Mumau and Anthony Montepart. Heats were won by Blystone and Mills.
In the July 21 make up feature for the DM Craig Fabrication & Welding 4 Cylinders, Brady Miller won for the second time this year. The start saw Bill Eckenrode leading the way. Eckenrode looked like he would pick up his first win as he lead the first 11 laps before a caution came out. On the restart Miller was able to make the winning pass and lead the final two laps. Eckenrode came home second over Dannie Mullen, David Needham and Larry Weltz. Rounding out the top ten were Brad Lemonovich, Robert Lydic, Don Inskeep, Mike Potter, Paul Koffler III and Matt Weltz.
The eight lap Rookie 4 Cylinder feature saw Fallentimber’s Brooks Kaufman take his first win. Kaufman beat out Dustin Gibbons, Cory Price, Jacob Botteicher, Destiny Bingaman, Chad Lidwell and Lance Marshall. Kaufman also won the heat.
