Copeman Tops Terry “Mole” Bassaro Memorial For RUSH Crate Late Models At Dog Hollow
5 min readSTRONGSTOWN, PA (August 4, 2018) – A packed pits of 127 race vehicles and big crowd saw Greensburg’s Clate Copeman score his third win of the season in the RUSH Crate Late Models taking home $1200 in the Terry “Mole” Bassaro Memorial. In the RUSH make up feature it was Eric Wilson of Cortland, OH winning for the first time at DHS. Another Cortland driver, Brian Boraweic, Jr., won the 270cc Micro Sprints. Dave Blazavich won the Townsend Gas & Oil Super Late Models for the third time this season while Jon Lee took win #7 in the 358 Semi Lates. Mike Benton was awarded the win in the AMSOIL Pure Stocks with Anthony Varner a first time winner in the DM Craig Fabrication & Welding 4 Cylinders. Mike Krepps, Jr. winning the Rookie 4 Cylinder feature.
Saturday night Dog Hollow honored Terry “Mole” Bassaro in a 30-lap Memorial for the RUSH Crate Late Models. Defending track champion Clate Copeman led all 30-laps to take home the $1200 paycheck. As the green dropped Copeman took off being chased by Tim Snare for the first two thirds of the race. Eighth starting Joe Moyer worked his way in to second after a caution on lap 25. Copeman was able to hold him off the final four laps for the victory. Moyer was second over Rob Marhefka, Tim Snare, John Britsky, Troy Shields, Jared Kane, Colin Casale, Eric Wilson and Mike Ott. Heat races were won by Shields and Copeman.
In the RUSH make up feature from July 21, it was Eric Wilson out front at the end of 20-laps. Wilson held off Copeman the whole race for his first Dog Hollow win. Copeman capped off a good night with a second place. Joe Moyer, Mike Ott and Colin Casale were the top five.
Marion Center’s Dave Blazavich blazed his way to win #3 in the 25-lap Townsend Gas & Oil Super Late Model feature. Blazavich led every lap holding off Shawn Claar the first ten laps. Jon Lee, who started seventh, worked his way in to second on lap 11 and took up chase. Lee would have to settle for second ahead of Matt Lux, Nate Smith, Shawn Claar, Scott Stein, John Wayne Weaver, Ken Schaltenbrand, Derek Stefanick and John Oaks. Clate Copeman and Shawn Claar were the heat winners.
The 358 Semi Late feature found Nick Fulmer taking the lead from his pole starting spot. Fulmer kept his #2 machine in the lead until lap eleven. Mahaffey’s Jon Lee came from his tenth starting spot to lead the final five laps for his fourth straight checkered flag. Fulmer held on for second over Robert Cossell, Ryan Caldwell, Jason Mullen, Josh Whetstone, Caleb Whiteford, Jeff Weakland, Shane Nihart and Gary Stitt. Taking the heat wins were Weakland and Cossell.
Justin Queen led the opening lap of the AMSOIL Pure Stocks. Duke Davidson then powered by and took off. Davidson crossed the line for what appeared to be his seventh win but was DQed for a rear spring violation. This gave the win to Mike Benton, his first of the season. Ron Benton was second over Bill Mumau and Marc Whetstone, Sr. Queen and Davidson won the two heats.
The mighty 270cc Micro Sprints, Brian Borawiec, Jr. drove to his second straight victory, Borawiec held off Todd Reusser, then Ryan Beatty, for this third checkered of the season. Beatty was second ahead of Todd Reusser, Luke Kroboth, Brandon Fredericks, Chase Metheney, Noah Wirginis, Ryan Fredericks, Austin Pasquerella and Lonny McConahy. Qualifying heats were won by Borawiec and Reusser.
Anthony Varner led the first lap of the 12-lap DM Craig Fabrication & Welding 4 Cylinder feature before Chris Andrew passed him. Andrews led Varner across the finish line but was DQed in a post race inspection. This gave the win to Varner in his first appearance at Dog Hollow. Second through tenth were Justin Williams, Matt Weltz, Mike Phillipson, Bill Eckenrode, David Gacka, John Bower, Charlie Stallman, Larry Weltz and Bill Sheehan. Heat winners were Brad Beatty, Chris Andrews and Cody Young.
The Rookie 4 Cylinder class found Mike Krepps, Jr. winning for the first time. He was followed by JT Matney, Lance Marshall, Jerry Mayes, #02 and Dustin Gibbons. Marshall won the lone heat.
Josh Brown won the ATV feature and Bill VanCuren won the UTV.
