BOSS First Ever Winged Event Saturday At Atomic
4 min readA new era is set to begin this Saturday, May 12th when BOSS rolls into Atomic Speedway just south of Chillicothe, Ohio. The traveling tour began in 2011 on the same highbanks of what was then known as K-C Raceway. For the last seven seasons, the growth was phenomenal and the most common question was, “when will you do some wing races?”
It has been 7 years in the making, but the Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series is set to debut with what very well may be THE most exciting format in the winged sprint car world. Only select events will happen in 2018, and a full tour is on tap in 2019. We are very proud to make yet another tour debut at Atomic Speedway.
This Saturday will be special, not only or the inaugural winged event, it is also a celebration of the 65th anniversary of the premiere southern Ohio dirt track! Special activities are planned and many race cars will be on display on the midway before the races.
For competing teams, there are NEVER any membership or entry fees with BOSS. We will be enforcing a 1400 pound minimum weight rule with the driver after the race. Top 3 in the main event will report to the scales. Wings must be flat tops with a maximum 2″ wickerbill. Hoosier Tires are the official tire and the right rear only must be the national H series tires. The HR15 is also legal in BOSS. The left rear and front tires are open to any Hoosier brand race tire. We will be using the yellow transponders and if you do not own one, they will be available for rent at the track for $15. Pit gates will open at 3 pm.
Saturday’s payout will have $65 added to the standard BOSS winged purse as the winner will be racing for $3,065 to win. Here is a complete breakdown of the main event payout: 3065, 1500, 1000, 700, 600, 550, 500, 475, 450, 425, 400, 380, 360, 340, 320, 300, 300, 300, 300, 300. As with ALL BOSS events, any car competing in the evening who fails to start the main event will get $100 tow money. As we have done for 7 years, payout for the A-Main will be by Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series checks.
The debut of the newest wing sprint car racing promises to bring what MAY be the most exciting format in the business. Cars will draw into hot lap / heat race groups and will group qualify. Heat races will invert one more car than what will transfer to the main event. This will create a “musical chairs” type situation where the front 5 cars will be battling for 4 transfer spots with the fastest qualifier starting 5th!
Cars that transfer through their heat race will earn their fastest qualifying lap time back for the main event. Non transfer cars will run a B-Main event which lines up based on heat race finishes. In the B-Main, 4 or 5 cars may transfer (depending on number of heats) but the winner ONLY will also get his time back. Balance of the transfers will start from the tail of the A. This will put a great emphasis on WINNING the B-Main and NOT just transferring.
Once the A-Main provisional lineup is set, the night’s fastest qualifier (who transferred through the heats) will pull a pill of 0, 4, 6 or 8 for the A-Main inversion. The only cars eligible for the inversion MUST have transferred out of their heats. The best the B-Main winner can start from (even if he was fast time) is the first car BEHIND the inversion. If the “zero” is pulled and the fastest qualifier of the night WON the B-Main, he will start from the pole position.
Any format questions can be directed to sprinter14@hotmail.com.
For fans, in addition to the BOSS winged sprint car debut, you can also catch the late models, modifieds and sport mods on the same card. Gates will open at 4 pm. A special happy hour will be from 4-6 pm with $1.00 hot dogs and $1.50 Budweiser! It will be a great way to stroll the midway on a forecasted beautiful day!
General admission for this special event is a very modest $15 with seniors and veterans admitted for $12. Kids 12 and under are free. Pit passes are $30 for adults and kids age 6-12 are admitted into the pits for just $20. For this special 65th anniversary, any fans born in 1953 will be admitted for just $10!
Please make plans to join us as history is made and the all new BOSS winged sprint series takes flight! For those unable to attend in person Saturday, watch for an announcement tomorrow night. ISC Sports Network will once again offer a live pay-per-view broadcast of the entire event including the late models, modifieds and sport mods!
