Irvin Brown Race Team Benefit/Open Practice Planned At Tyler County
4 min read(Middlebourne, WV) Sometimes fate’s cruelty is exhibited in ways that racers never can account for. In the early morning hours of April 23rd, a devastating garage fire consumed everything that the Irvin-Brown Racing Team owned. What had taken decades of hard work to accumulate was gone by the time the sun rose that otherwise peaceful Sunday morning in Jacksonburg, WV. Thankfully no one was injured, and despite heroic attempts by local firefighters, all was lost at the garage home of Irvin-Brown racing.
Sam Irvin, the patriarch of the Irvin and Brown teams, has ties that go back 43 years with the Tyler County Speedway. Literally one of the ‘founding fathers’ as a driver at the track, Sam has been a literal fixture at the ‘Bullring’ since its inception. His easy demeanor and ready smile masked a bonafide lead foot who muscled the early years car with the best of them at the high banked quarter mile. Sam’s love for racing was passed on to following generations, and like a good tree that bears excellent fruit so went the Irvin racing lineage.
In a show of appreciation for Sam Irvin, son Scott and grandson Travis Brown the Hometown Racing Association invites racers and fans alike to a midweek practice to benefit the Irvin Brown Racing Team. John Watson, promoter at the Tyler County Speedway said “We’re heartsick for Sam, Scott, Travis and all involved. We want to do something more than just pass the helmet through the stands, and know that race teams want to do something as well. We’ve decided to have a midweek practice night where 100% of the proceeds taken in that evening will go to the Irvin Brown Racing Team to try and help them get back on their feet. Sam Irvin has been a big part of the Tyler County Speedway from the very start, and maybe this token of our esteem along with the support from fans, racers, friends and neighbors will help them out.”
The Irvin Brown Racing Benefit practice night date has been set for Wednesday, May 17th. Gates will open at 4pm in the afternoon, with pit admission being $15.00 and general admission $5.00. Full concessions will be available, a 50/50 will be conducted and kids games will be a part of the evening’s festivities. “We always try to do our best to accommodate worthy causes in our community, but it’s not often you have an opportunity to extend a helping hand to those who you normally greet in your pit area every weekend.”
“Everything from concessions, ticket sales, the 50/50, all proceeds from any sales that night will go 100% to the Irvin Brown team” said Watson. “The track staff will be donating their time and efforts. The racers will have a chance to do some valuable testing in advance of the big Memorial weekend two night show we have coming up. The mid-week date allows folks who normally may race elsewhere to participate and all divisions are welcome, show their support and enjoy the benefits of a non-competition test atmosphere. Knowing how supportive and generous racers and fans alike are regarding the sport we all love, we hope to have a large field of cars and genuinely hope we pack the place.”
