(Mercer, PA March 26, 2017): Ron Boyd, Jr. of Fredonia held off Ryan Boyd in the final stages of the Jack Frost Enduro, which finished under a slight rain at Mercer Raceway Park Sunday afternoon. In the companion Snowflake 20, it was Jason Shaw taking the top honors.
Thirty-two racers entered the 2017 enduro, but only twenty-five of them answered the starting bell.
Former Pennsylvania State Trooper Tim Callahan jumped out at the start, but Ryan Boyd showed that he had a competitive mount. He surged from the fourth starting spot to the lead early in the century grind. Within a handful of laps, though, Ron Boyd, Jr. assumed command.
Nick Brinker broke up the Boyd family dominance, working into second position by lap twenty. He chased Ron Boyd, Jr. for the next twenty laps or more. Brinker was scored as the leader at the halfway mark.
Nick Brinker would lead the next 44 laps. For most of that time, Boyd Jr. ran second. Ryan Boyd, Taylor Shaley, Craig Karns, Matt Brinker, and David Rimer remained within striking distance.
With victory in sight, though, Nick Brinker’s car began to slow dramatically, while Boyd Jr. was able to maintain a steady pace. Just six laps from the finish, Boyd Jr. made the pass for the lead. Ryan Boyd and Taylor Shaley also moved past Brinker, who was fading fast.
At the checkers, it was Ron Boyd, Jr. finishing just secopnds ahead of Ryan Boyd. Taylor Shaley and Nick Brinker were next, just one lap in arears. Dave Rimer, Ron Boyd, and Don Peebles also completed 90 laps or more. There wewre just nine cars still running at the end of the race.
The race was stopped twice for safety reasons, including a spectacular fire around lap 22. No racers were injured, however.
In the Snowflake 20, Terry Feely grabbed the early lead, but Jason Shaw powered past him in turn two three laps into the race. Shaw would continue out front for the remaining laps, with Feely in second. Pat Hanlon ran third the entire distance.
Shaw, Feely, and Hanlon were followed across the line by J.R. Shaner, William Haylett, and Karlee Longwell. Harold Winner was unable to start the race.
