A lot of history was set at Wayne County Speedway Saturday night as Richmond Indiana’s Duane Chamberlain led all 40 laps to claim the Buckeye Late Model Dirt Week opener presented by Octane Race Products. The race was the first in the week long series that is being held for the first time as the scheduled opener at Moler Raceway Park was rained out Friday night. Then it was a 25 lap feature for the Super Late Model drivers who had never won a feature before sponsored by Weekley Electric with Dresden’s Vic Hottinger taking the lead from Jeremy Canada near the halfway mark and go on to pocket the $2,000 winners share. Miamisburg’s Brandon Gardner made history for himself as he went flag to flag to win his 100th career win.
Russ King started the evening off be setting fast time of 17.360 seconds and then Corey Conley, Jeremy Berwanger, Steve Casebolt, Rod Conley and Doug Drown won the heats. Tim McCreadie topped the dash to set on the pole of the 40 lap Don Gross Memorial alongside Chamberlain. At the drop of the green, Chamberlain shot the St. Henry Nite Club, Ron’s Service Center and Creekside ‪#‎20c‬ into the lead over T-Mac. Rick Bond, King and Berwanger battled side by side for third with Berwanger grabbing control of third on lap nine as Corey Conley joined Bond and King for fourth. As those three went three wide past the flagstand on lap 16, Bond and King got together with both cars having damage done, neither stopping but cost both many positions. Chamberlain was working his way through the back markers as McCreadie could not make up any ground on the leader. A caution on lap 23 would give the leaders a clear track as McCreadie would stay on the back bumper of Chamberlain but as the laps clicked off, Chamberlain would start to pull away and pull into victory lane, $4,000 richer. Berwanger finished third behind McCreadie as Corey Conley took 4th as 13th starting Matt Westfall passed King with 7 circuits to go to get fifth. Gary Gellner won the C main as Joe Anderzack, Jim Nicely and DJ Miller also advanced into the B with Mike Davis taking the checker flag in the B as Ryan Markham and Chris Keller also transferring into the feature.
With Weekley Electric putting up the $2,000 to win prize money plus sponsorship for the 2016 season for the drivers who had never won a Super Late Model feature in their career, early race nerves by the 18 drivers who started caused three cautions in the first five laps but after that it was caution free as Jeremy Canada, driving Ryan Markham’s second car setting the early pace with Rick Armstrong, Rick Mardis, Vic Hottinger and Jeremy Misel in pursuit. Running fourth, Hottinger and his Coshocton Trucking, Advantage Air Heating and Cooling and Prince Racing Bodies ‪#‎4h‬ went to the high side of turns one and two on lap eight and charged by Mardis for third and two laps later blew by Armstrong for second and then charged by Canada on the next circuit and then never looked back to collect his first Super Late Model win and all the goodies when the checker flag flew. Canada held on to second as Gary Gellner passed Mardis and Armstrong early on the last lap with Mardis slipping past Armstrong in turns three and four on the last lap.
While those 18 drivers were looking for their first win, Brandon Gardner has spent most of his racing career in the Aamco Transmission Super Stock class and has won features all across the state of Ohio along with track championships and tonight used the outside pole starting position and jumped into the lead and stayed out front all 15 laps and parked the Schaeffer Oil, RDL, and Innovative Graphics ‪#‎27g‬ in victory lane for the 100th time. Gary Hensel and Chase Alexander dueled for second in the opening 5 laps when Hensel got loose and dropped back with opening night feature winner Nick Smith moving into third with Tyler Thompson in fourth and Tyler Nicely in fifth. As Gardner kept expanding his lead, Alexander and Smith went wheel to wheel for second with Smith winning that battle on the last lap as the Tyler’s, Thompson and Nicely rounded out the top five. Alexander and Gardner topped the heat races.
Winning never gets old as Wooster’s Doug Hensel, who won the heat race, powered past Brad Hensel on lap three and then held him off the rest of the way to put the Fast Lane Towing, Finishline Autobody and BS Express Motorsports #18 for the third time this season. Michael Workman trailed the Hensel’s with Jeff Edwards and Wes Staley filled out the top five.
The next racing action at Wayne County Speedway will be Monday, June 22 for the UNOH All Star Sprint Speedweek show that will pay $5,000 to win plus the touring Sweeney Rush Late Models will make their first visit ever to WCS with a $1,500 to win feature. Saturday, June 20th will be a show for the Flat Track Carts and the Mini Wedges. For more information on the upcoming schedule, go to www.waynecountyspeedway.com
