New Faces Grace Victory Lane At Elkins
5 min read(Kerens, W.V. 5-15-15) Three weeks are now in the books at the Elkins Raceway. Another strong car count are setting the stage for a battle royal for the track Championships.
In the Jenkins Ford Super Late Models, Tim Senic and Cody Hardesty were heat race winners. Senic jumped to the lead with Hardesty, Paul Wilmoth Jr., Charlie George, and Chuck Harper filling in the top five. By lap five, Senic, still in command with Wilmoth now second. The race stayed green as Senic built nearly a full straight away cushion by lap 15. The only stoppage came on lap 23 when Robert Smith looped his car in turn four. On the restart Wilmoth made a last ditch effort but trying the high side coming out of turn two. But, he slipped off the racing surface giving Senic breathing room. Senic in the Roy’s R V Super Center / Shaeffer Racing Oil #S2 sat in victory circle for the first time this year. Wilmoth crossed in second, Hardesty was third. George and Shane Hitt completed the top five.
The Budweiser FASTRAK feature saw outside pole setter Michael Lake out drag Derek Rogers to the first turn for the advantage. By the end of lap one, Lake had Kyle Thomas and Daniel Hill hot on his tail. Lake drove a smooth line circuit after circuit, keeping Thomas behind him. When the checkers fell, the Bobby Lake Motorsports / High Gear Speed Shop #27 of Lake scored his first win of the season. Thomas had to hold off Hill for second. Tyler Stutler and Rogers were fourth and fifth.
Ever got that feeling you’ve been here before? In the Performance Motors Modifieds, Dave Defibaugh grabbed the point just as the previous two weeks. Sixth starting Brent Trimble (who had slipped by Defibaugh on the final lap for two straight weeks.) moved to third on lap one. On lap three, Trimble was second. Setting up the same scenario. On lap 10 Trimble looked under Defibaugh as the yellow waved. Trimble continued to apply heavy pressure looking inside then outside. Each time yellow would void the progress. On the white flag lap, the two were even at the line. Trimble, in the H & R Block / T & C Motorsports Photography #1B, this week used the inside to gain the advantage to capture his third consecutive last lap pass for the win. Defibaugh again would finish second. Randy Bohan, Mike Murphy (driving Bill VanDeVendar’s #9), and James Nelson were the remainder of the top five.
The West Virginia Pools Street Stocks saw opening night feature winner Anthony Arbogast at the front of the pack. John Tallman Jr. chased Arbogast lap after lap. By the half way mark, Tallman pulled even with Arbogast. The A & K Repair Service / C & JJ’s Used Cars #8A of Arbogast notched his second checkerboard of the season. After post race inspection, Tallman was disqualified for illegal parts. Ryan Watson was moved to second. Jamie Keene was third, Brad Harris fourth and Bryan Mitchell fifth.
The final event of the evening was the Miller’s Used Cars Mod Lite feature. Beau Newlon used his outside pole position to out run John Cogar to turn one. Newlon driving the Newlon’s International / Apex Speed Shop #1 added his second checkers to the collection this year. Cogar had to settle for second Mitch Ward, Logan Hitt and Gabe Phillips rounded out the top five.
Just one week after being transported to the hospital after a wreck on the front chute, Abby Watson returned in the B C T Construction Mini Wedges. In the A group feature, Watson, defending track Champion Paije Bragg, and Garrett Jones raged nothing short of a war at the front of the field. All three having time in the lead around the track. When the race ended, Watson was first to cross the stripe. Jones was second, and Bragg was third. Khole Howell and Mitch Thomas were fourth and fifth.
The B group of the B C T Construction Mini Wedges had their third different winner in three weeks. Pressley Wilt captured the win this time ahead of opening night winner Blake Runyon, last week’s winner Abbie Hudler – Pennington, Kelsey Tincher and Madison Taylor.
This week West Virginia Pools present the first special of the season. The Elkins Raceway Street Stocks will battle for $500 to win. Coming in two weeks, Darren’s Pizza Shack present autograph and picture night. Meet your favorite driver. So get your cameras and sharpies ready.
Don’t forget to mark your calendars for June 26. The 5th annual Jim Hitt Memorial for the Jenkins Ford Super Late Models. A $5,000 check awaits the winner. It will also be Breast Cancer Awareness night brought to you by; Hitt’s Garage, Middletown Homes, Mountain Lakes Convention and Visitors Bureau, TKS Construction and High Point Construction. There will be extra money to win in all other classes also. PLUS a gigantic fireworks display!
