May 3, 2014- Last night the 55 year old beauty, Beckley Motor Speedway, came back to life for another season with a grand re-opening under the management of Rickey Strattis and his family. The track racing surface was in excellent shape thanks to track coordinator Chuck Maxwell and crew. It made for a very fast night of race in on the track!

Headlining the nights events would be the the Super Late Model class. Five cars signed in in a class we are working hard to rebuild at Beckley Motor Speedway. Rickey had put up an extra $500 to anyone who could beat Wayne Hughes current track record of 12.850. Ricky Williams went out trying hard to do that in qualifying. Ricky soared to a pole time of 13.029 trying to take the $500. He just didn’t quite get there, so the $500 challenge will stand. In the heat race Wayne Hughes took the lead and never looked back. At feature time the cars were on a rail. Flying around the track was Wayne Hughes with Ricky Williams in close pursuit. Things got a little hairy while they were lapping Brad Jarrell. Wayne tried to take him on the high line and got up almost out of the track, but kept in the gas and held on to the lead as Brad was having car problems. Ricky also had a tough time getting around Jarrell on the low side. Brad pulled to a stop on the front stretch bringing out the only caution of the night in the Super Late Model event. On the restart Williams tried to give Hughes a run for his money, but just couldn’t quite get him. Hughes would go on to win with Williams finishing 2nd. Rounding out the top 5 would be Jeff Lilly, Brandon Carter, and Brad Jarrell.

The Open Wheel Modifieds brought out 12 cars last night. In qualifying David Godfrey got his first career pole at Beckley Motor Speedway running a 14.778. In the heat races Keith Bills took heat 1 and Mike Duncan took heat race 2. The feature for the open wheel cars started with an opening lap caution. Keith Bills the pole sitter spun in front of the field in turn 4. Causing several cars to spin and ending Steve Stover’s night. The rest of the race had a few cautions one of which tore the whole door of Michael Moore’s number 2 car off. The big story though was Mike Duncan on a rail leading the entire race. he had several hard charges from Daniel’s Tate Hughes, but he never could get by him. Duncan had his car dialed into the track and put on a great show for the fans. Duncan brought home the opening night win with Hughes close behind in 2nd. The rest of the top 5 were Midway’s Ryan Williams, Michael Moore of Beckley, and Flat Top’s Jason Cochran.

The Crates brought 16 cars to put on a great show for the fans. Rick Williams who set the fast time in the Super Late Models also set fast time in the Crates at a 14.170. The heat races were taken by Ricky Williams and Aaron Barley. Thea feature was action packed and after a couple early cautions ran the rest of the race with only one caution. Rick Williams fell back quick from his pole starting spot to around 4th or 5th and never really made up much ground from there. Aaron Barley was soaring around the track and no one could really touch him in the feature. He took the win by 1.404 seconds over Tyler Cox who brought home second. The rest of the top 5 were Chris Meadows, Ricky Williams, and Eddie Hambrick.

The Outlaw Street class brought four cars out. David Ferreira dominated the heat and the feature. He took the win in each. 2nd went to Kevin Fitzwater in the feature followed by James McCune and Hope Lusher.

The Street Stock’s had the most cars bringing a full field of 20 cars. The green team came out in domination fashion for opening night of 2014. They took two of the three heat races. Heat one was won by 1 1/2 Robert Richardson, heat two by Steve Adkins, and the heat three winner was the only non-team green winner in the street stocks last night the 13G of Gentry Cline. The feature saw the first four laps go without a caution. Then things got a little wild. The race became caution marred and one driver ended up with a disqualification and suspension. Meanwhile up front the green team was still in charge. Robert Richardson took the win followed by Steve Adkins, Bradley Richardson, Greg Pierce, and Robert Modley II.

The Hornet class put on a wild show one time being five wide in their heat race! An early caution in the heat race took out half the field. The heat was won by #206 DJ Critchley. In the feature Critchley took off and never looked back winning it by almost half a track. 2nd went to Brandon Adkins followed by Blake Ellis, Patrick Raynes, and Zachery Lilly.

We would like to thank everyone who came out and supported us and look forward to a great 2014 season! This coming week are planning something special for mother’s, so stayed tuned to find out more details on our May 9th event!
