CHILLICOTHE, OHIO-Two repeat winners and two newcomers visited victory circle Saturday night during Food Drive Night at Brad McCown’s Atomic Speedway, where veteran Danny Smith, Chillicothe, Ohio claimed the 410 outlaw sprint main and Dean Boyd, Williamsburg, Ohio claimed the Street Stock feature as second-time winners at Atomic in 2014. “Insane” Duane Chamberlain, Richmond, Indiana was the Gullion Ent. AMRA Late Model winner, setting fast time and taking home the $1,500 win, while another newcomer, Travis Dickson, Gallipolis, Ohio; a third generation driver from the racing Dickson family edged Kenny Johnson to take the Advanced Services AMRA Octane main. Next week May 3 is “Modified Mayhem” weekend featuring $1,500 to win for the Advanced Services Octane Modifieds.
Duane Chamberlain brought out the shop broom and swept the competition in the AMRA Late Model main. Chamberlain set fast time, won the first heat, then after a battle with Rod Conley swept away to the 25-lap feature win. Cars from four states lined up on the starting grid– Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Indiana– with the Hoosier driver bringing home the win.
Hot Rod Conley, Wheelersburg, Ohio led the first seven laps, then after a caution succumbed to a torrid battle with Chamberlain’s Rocket/Darge Engines Powered ‪#‎20C‬. Chamberlain literally rode off into the sunset after a brief bid by Conley to retake the lead.
Great battles throughout the pack kept the fans on edge, namely a race-long battle between Delmas Conley and Jason Montgomery, and a three-way firefight among Mark Frazier, J.T. Conley and Billy Gullion. Gullion ran a solid top five most of the race before yielding late to Frazier and the young J.T.
Meanwhile, Chamberlain flat-footed his missile to victory. Chamberlain slammed his mount hard against the cushion to outdistance two generations of the Conley clan who were running second and third. Rounding out the top ten were Chamberlain, Hot Rod Conley, Delmas Conley, Jason Montgomery, Mark Frazier, J.T. Conley, Billy Gullion, Kevin Wagner, Ralph Withem, and Mick Sansom. the hard-charger of the race was Mick Sansom from 17th to tenth.
“We started out well then had some bad luck in the heat,” said Chamberlain. “We poked a hole in the radiator and had to scramble to patch that up. We like coming here and the car worked really good. It went about everywhere I wanted. I didn’t know just how far ahead I was.”
For Mark Imler, “It was close, but no Cigar.” Imler of Chillicothe, Ohio led the first 17 laps of the Pine Tree Towing 410 Outlaw sprint main, surviving two red flags and four cautions. Imler was good in traffic and at times started to pull away, but Sam Ashworth closed in by lap 7 to challenge for the lead when Bryan Nuckles slammed the turn three wall and flipped. Ashworth, with no place to go, rode the front wheel of Greg Nicholas in evasive action, but was able to restart. His car was never exactly the same after the mishap.
On the restart Imler continued to lead, but Ryan Broughton benefitted and worked his way into the top five. At the same time Cole Duncan charged from the tail and an earlier flip into the top ten. Also on a charge was Kory Crabtree who started rear pack in 22nd and began to pick off the competition, while Josh Davis anchored a strong third and Nate Reeser held a top six most of the race. Davis looked to be fast on the lap 14 restart, but after the lap 17 delay never recouped the zap of the previous circuits.
Imler dominated for the next several laps, but Broughton again had a good restart over Davis. Broughton then picked off Ashworth for second with Smith in tow making it a three car race.
The young talent Broughton took the lead after the final red flag led several laps; pulling away from the top three. Broughton appeared to be well in control and looked to be “off to the races” before his ignition box became disengaged, allowing Smith and Imler back into the mix. Smith’s Maxim/J.D. Engines/Coors light Gang #4 went high and Imler low with the veteran Smith storming on to the victory.
“It was a tricky track tonight and hard to figure out, slick in spots, really slick in other spots, and tacky in others,” said Smith. “I don’t know if I could have caught Broughton or not, but I was gonna give it a try. It worked out and we’re here in victory lane. And that’s good cause we needed the money.”
Behind Smith in the top ten were Mark Imler, Cole Duncan, Josh Davis, Aaron Higgins, Sam Ashworth, Jimmy Stinson, Kory Crabtree, Wes McGlumphy, and Nate Reeser. Ronnie Blair and Adams Strausser took extremely violent flips that trashed their frames, but both emerged only shaken. Other flip victims were Duncan (heat) and Nuckles in the feature. Jesse McCreary suffered minor burns when hot fluids spewed onto him in lap 17 of the feature. Duncan was hard-charger in 22nd to 3rd charge.
The AMRA Modified cars put on one heck of a show from start to finish. On the first lap, youngster Seth Daniels and Dave Jameson got together and into the front stretch wall with Jameson flipping over the top of Daniels and back onto his wheels. Pole sitter Jimmy Lennex, Maysville, Kentucky and last week’s winner led the first 8 laps of the AMRA modified main. Bob Crace, Jr. the third heat winner, and then Kenny Johnson filed into second before Travis Dickson took the runner-up slot. Dickson’s Two Brothers Shaw with Sherman Gerlach power was strong all evening long.
As the race unfolded, a spectacular three-way battle between Lennex, Johnson, and Dickson developed. Dickson took the lead from Lennex and a lap later Johnson ensued. Lennex regained the position, but Johnson came right back, setting a wild six-lap dash to the finish between Johnson and Dickson. During that span Dickson was smooth and fast, but Johnson pulled up alongside numerous times, only to have Dickson prevail.
Dave Pinkerton snuck into the frey for the final three circuits with Greggie Oliver in tow, subbing for Kevin Dulaney. Mark Dickson ran a steady race, while Colt Maxwell battled off the tail after a spin back to sixth.
“I have watched a lot of races here and ran here many times, but this is my first time in victory lane at Atomic Speedway,” said Dickson. “Jimmy Lennex and Kenny Johnson are fast everywhere they go. I always enjoy racing with Kenny Johnson because he battles you hard, but races you clean. I just want to thank everyone that helped me get here tonight. It’s a great, great feeling.”
Rounding out the top ten behind Dickson were Kenny Johnson, Dave Fireball Pinkerton, Greg Oliver, Jimmy Lennex, Mark Dickson, Colt Maxwell, Rob Stambaugh, Mike Conkle, and Donnie Miller. Miller and Pinkerton shared hard-charger honors.
“Rubbin’ is racing” and that’s just what the Street Stock finale came to. Both Tommy Mossbarger and Dean Boyd suffered bad luck in the heat race. But come feature time, they turned their luck around. Adam Jones led the first eight laps, while the field sparred behind him. Dave Landman and Larry Highland fought hard for second before Tommy Mossbarger kicked his mount into high gear and stormed to the front. Boyd and Tim Cutler dueled for position, then Boyd blasted by Jones on the high side.
Mossbarger was his next prey and over the next two laps the duo rubbed doors before making heavy contact coming off turn four on the white flag lap. Both cars headed head-long toward the wall but both drivers were able to regain the handle, somehow averting disaster. Boyd, also the hard charger from 7th to first, carried the momentum and brought home his second win in a row in his Cropper powered Adams Chassis.
“It’s good to be here again,” said Boyd. “I made up my mind I was gonna driver up the wall if I had to. After we made contact, I made up my mind I was going for the win.”
Behind Boyd were Mossbarger, Adam Jones, Tim Cutler, Justin Poling, Dave Landman, Larry Highland, Brian McQuay, and Joseph McClain.
