(Zach Yost Photo) (Middlebourne, WV) Money, money, and more money… that’s what was distributed to those in attendance at this year’s 2nd running of the “Let It Ride 55” for the Renegades of Dirt Modified Tour. Approaching $50,000 in total event purse the event doubled the tours largest purse in history and will easily be the highest paying show in the Eastern United States in 2013. The result of the large loot up for grabs…an absolutely packed pit area including some of the biggest names in open wheel dirt modifieds today from nine different states across the Eastern United States. Race fans who walked the participant work area early Saturday could easily see the weekend would be a premier display of racing action which included a who’s who of dirt modifieds gunning for the $7555 dollar top prize. The race format would see the show split between Saturday and Sunday over the Memorial Weekend.

After a rainy Thursday caused the evening’s schedule practice to be canceled, on track action took Friday off for the huge country concert but was all set for the battle ahead set to began on Saturday evening at the ¼ mile “Bullring” with 2Brothers Motorsports Time Trials. The events fifty-eight car field would be split into three groups, with Travis Dickson showing the fast way around of Group #1, Nick Hoffman would take the point of Group #2 as well as the 2Brothers Motorsports overall quick time $155 bonus, and Jesse Wisecarver would lead the third and final Group #3. Hoffman would then pull a straight up zero for the event’s heat race invert setting the lineups based directly through their qualifying times.
As the evening progressed it would be six preliminary heat races that would set up the Dash, and A-Main lineups ahead. When heat action unfolded it would host intense battles all over the “Bullring” with Kyle Strickler, Rick Aukland, Nick Hoffman, Brent Trimble, Jesse Wisecarver and Don Adams all taking wins over second place heat finishers; Travis Dickson, Corey Conley, Bryan Barber, Gerald Deitch, Jess Hartman, and Kevin Morehouse. Next up on the speedway for the Renegades of Dirt Modified Tour presented by Arizona Sport Shirts was the Genesis Shocks “Dash For Cash”. When the green flag waved it was Trimble who grabbed the early point with Hoffman working his way from fourth to second in the early eight lap event. As the checkered flew it was Morgantown, WV’s #1B of Brent Trimble who would take the $255 bonus and the top spot for Sundays “Let It Ride 55”, rounded out by Hoffman, Adams, Wisecarver, Aukland, and Strickler(DNS).
Blue skies and a much warmer daytime greeted a continued steady stream of fans that made the trek to the Tyler County Speedway to watch the finale of the “Jackpot 100” weekend that included a pair of World of Outlaw Late Model A-Mains. The full house would be treated to a three and sometimes four wide battle right out of the gate when Renegade of Dirt Modified Tour B-Main #1 took to the “Ring”. It was a race in which they all through out a bag of tricks for a chance to get into the prestigious “Let It Ride 55”, lead early by Bird Wilson but not without a stampede of racers right on his bumper. Kenny Johnson, Bud Watson, Mark Dickson, Deana Groves, DJ Cline, Rich Michael, Wilson all at times under a blanket for the two lucrative transfer positions. At the races end it would be the #1J of Mineral Wells, WV’s Kenny Johnson who would take the win with Bird Wilson 2nd both earning the spots directly into the evenings feature event. Ischua, NY’s Rich Michael would take third to grab the point for the ModFury.com Non-Qualifier. B-Main #2 would have a tall task in topping the previous, but it was the “J-Hawk” Jared Hawkins who would steal the show, taking the transfer positions along with Virginia’s Bret Hamilton. B-Main #3 would again wow the crowd much like the first, featuring a remarkable run by the #11H of Matt Holcomb who started the field from the last position but went on to take the win, followed by Jason Brookover and Greg Brown.
When the much anticipated “Let It Ride 55” field hit the track it was a stacked twenty six car unit that would stop on the front stretching for a hair raising driver introduction and four wide salute prior to taking the green on the fifty-five lap main event. At the point it was Brent Trimble taking the early lead but was immediately overtaken by the #2 of Nick Hoffman. As the race developed battles continued to ensue all over the wide and racy “Bullring” including a forward moving Bryce Jewell who finished 3rd from his 13th starting spot and JP Roberts who worked his way from 14th to 4th prior to the races end. Hoffman continued to distance himself to the field until Aukland found the fastest line around the speedway with fifteen to go navigating it to perfection to reel in the race leader. However, when the checkered flag waved it was Mooresville, NC’s Nick Hoffman taking the $7555 dollar Renegade of Dirt Tour win, his first career RoDT win in four attempts. The pilot of his own built Elite Chassis, Eibach Springs, WAR Shocks, KBC Grafix, Basset Wheels, All-Star Performance #2 machine, Hoffman returned to the speedway for his post race interview in grand fashion with a 360′ in turn one and his signature back flip. The young and talented racer continues to claim some of the biggest dirt modified events across the country, but none bigger the this. The $7555 to win, “LET IT RIDE 55” marks a career best victory which already features a Volusia Gator win, a UMP Nationals win, and County Line ‘Race for Kids’ win. Hoffman was followed to the line by Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer and Renegade regular Rick Aukland, Kentucky UMP racer Bryce Jewell, AMRA runner JP Roberts, and Bandit Race Car builder Bryan Barber of Kentucky. Fifth through tenth went to “The High Side Tickler” Kyle Strickler who faded late after controversial contact from Don Adams who finished 9th, current RoDT point leader Kevin Morehouse finished 6th, “The Hitman” Jess Hartman a solid 7th, and an early front running Jesse Wisecarver survived a mid race bobble to finish tenth.
“This car was a bare frame when we made the decision to finish it up for this race on Monday” exclaimed an excited Hoffman. “Thanks to my family, my sponsors, Tyler Nicely, and anyone else who helped get this thing to victory lane tonight” added Hoffman. “It feels great, this is definitely my biggest career win. Hats off to the Renegade Tour and Tyler County Speedway on the track and for what they are doing” continued Nick. “We had a great run and I knew Aukland was going to be there but I knew we had the car to hold him off, anytime you can beat him (Aukland) it means a lot” finished Hoffman.
Although the bulk of the pay was awarded during the main event, there was still plenty to divvy up when the ModFury.com ‘Non-Qualifier’ hit the racing surface for the twenty-five lapper. Rich Michael jumped out to the early point and would separate himself from second running Chris Basich as he maneuvered his way through the events lap traffic. The New York Renegade of Dirt regular, Michael set is #17X on cruise control in his dominating win of the $755 to win event. The 2Brothers Shaw, Tregler Racing Engines, Genesis Shocks, Carlin Pizza Stop, Genesse Paving machine was flawless in capturing the win and followed in the rundown by Basich, Bud Watson, Kevin Miller, and Carlos Jaramillo.
“Wish we could of made the big show, but we will take it (the win)” stated Michael. “The track was a little rough in three and four but we could race around it and the car was really good tonight. Thanks to all my crew, family, and sponsors for their support and help this weekend” concluded Michael.
The Renegades of Dirt Modified Tour will now take a few weeks to ‘catch their breath’ prior to returning to action for FOUR STRAIGHT NIGHTS of racing. The inaugural “Duel on Dirt Speedweek” will feature the wicked open wheel warriors of the Renegade tour nightly running for $1000 to win and $150 to start. The tour will be joined in action each evening by $4,000 to win Super Late Model shows during the 1st running of the “ICON Memorial Tour” Late Model Speedweek. Look for more details to emerge soon on the speedweek for both divisions as the event draws near.
