After rain and cold shot down NAPA Wayne County Speedway’s WoO Late Models and Renegade’s of Dirt opener two weeks ago, everyone was chomping at the bit to see some racing action on the 3/8 mile oval. Since the transponders and scoring system went into place, no laps have been turned as fast as they were in qualifying for the Lias Tire Late Models as Russ King turned two laps in the 16 second bracket with the fastest at 16.737 on the well groomed racing surface.
The opening feature on VP Racing Fuels night would be the Fisher Performance Sprints with West Jefferson’s Kory Crabtree setting on the pole and out hustling Wes McGlumphy into turn one for the lead that would last one lap as fourth starting Lee Jacobs would blast into the lead as last years track champion, Andrew Palker and Danny Mumaw and Beau Stewart had worked their way into the top five at the ten lap mark. With Jacobs expanding his lead a tight battle was shaping up with Crabtree, Palker and Mumaw as Danny Smith now in fifth at the halfway mark. Just as Jacobs started lap 17, a big cloud of smoke erupted out of his #81 as he kept up the pace but as the pack went into turn four, Palker jumped the cushion and hit the wall and flopped onto his side to bring out the red flag ending his night and Jacobs had lost all oil pressure and went pitside also. On the restart, Crabtree and his Crabtree Body Shop, Millhone Motorsports, and Mike’s Trucking #60, dashed out to the lead as Danny Smith powered past Mumaw and Stewart for second but could not track down Crabtree. Fast Qualifier Chris Myers moved past Stewart with five laps to go to claim fourth.
Brad Malcuit and Charlie Duncan brought the Lias Tire Late Model field to the green flag and Charlie Duncan charged into the lead as Malcuit ran second and a dogfight between JR Gentry, last season’s track champ, Shane McLoughlin, Rick Bond, Cory Conley and King was brewing for third. Gentry went highside of in turn three and spun in the cushion to bring out the caution on lap seven. As Bond, King, Malcuit and Conley wheeled and dealed with each other, Duncan opened up another big lead. Bond and King ran tightly together with some contact at the halfway mark with King taking over with a lot of track to make up on Duncan. With four to go, the lapped car of Jerry Aber and King touched with Aber spinning to slow the action. On the restart King was all over Charlie Duncan but could not slip past and on the last lap going into turn three, King and his King Brothers Ready Mix Concrete, All Star Performance and Michael Schimmley Kontracting #56 powerslid into Duncan with contact and rolled out of turn four with the lead and win. Duncan held on to second as Conley, McLoughlin, and Bond rounded out the top five.
The Thrifty Muffler Super Stock feature took the green flag with Kyle Moore and Jeremy LynchStaying side by side for the opening lap but Moore got sideways in turn two on the second circuit and dropped back to sixth place as Lynch cruised to a big lead with Bob Daugherty and Frank Oriti charging for second. Moore who was fast timer had gather himself back together to get back by Brandon Craver and Oriti and took on Daugherty for second . As the laps wound down, Lynch started to fade as Daugherty closed in with Moore in pursuit of the two front runners. Daugherty took over the point with three laps to go with Mansfield’s Moore with his Moore’s Auto Sales, Hall’s Auto Sales #2* using the highside to pass. As the two came out of turn four for the checkered flag, sparks came shooting out of Daugherty’s rear housing and Moore nipped him at the line for the win. Lynch held on to third with Craver, last years track champion in fourth as Oriti claimed fifth.
Bruce Miller led the opening three laps of the NAPA Auto Parts Modified race with Chris Basich in second until he rammed a retaining tire in turn one on the second lap to send himself to the tail of the field, Danville’s Nathan Loney would squeeze by Miller on lap four and never look back aboard the Rich’s Body Shop and The Hangout Bar & Grill #10 for the win, Basich would work his way back through the field and take second from Miller with five to go and Eric Singhaus moved past Miller on the last lap for third with Miller finishing fourth ahead of Jim Nicely.
Team cars of Jordan James and Gary Hensel Jr. went door handle to door handle for the first lap when Hensel Jr. broke a ball joint in turn two to end his night. James would cruise away for the apparent win but was DQ’ed in post race inspection giving the win to Wooster’s Brad Hensel’s Bargain Shed and DJ Directional Services #28. Mike Rose, Mitch Reichard, Lester Berry and Adam Kern trailed Hensel.
Zanesville’s Tanner McLoughlin and his 2 Brothers Motorsports #59 won the Mini Wedge main over Logan Duncan.
Another regular show is set for next Friday, May 3rd at NAPA WCS with first race set to go green at 7:45 pm.
