During the past 15 seasons that the University of Northwestern Ohio has owned and operated Limaland Motorsports Park, the Modified division has consistently been among the most competitive racing at the track. The May 18th twenty lap feature produced another thrilling contest and finish that ranks with the best ever. Jerry Bowersock’s all-out charge through the final four laps gave him an early season comeback win for the ages.

A pair of first-time 2012 campaigners gained the attention at the start of the race with Aaron Orr occupying the pole and second row starter Brian Shaw leading the first lap to the line. A five-car pileup between turns one and two at the start ended the night for the lone two-time winner this season Jake Reufer and Cory Seeling.

When the race resumed, Brian Shaw, Orr, Bowersock, Todd Sherman and Terry Hull all pushed forward at the front of the field. There was three-wide racing coming out of turn four that thrilled the crowd at the high-banked ¼-mile oval.

A rare collision on the backstretch during the ninth lap, involving the track’s two greatest Modified winners, left defending champion Todd Sherman in the infield and Terry Hull still racing, but heavily damaged on the right side door panel.

Another three-wide battle developed with Aaron Orr, Shaw and Bowersock dueling for the lead. Brian Shaw took the top position on lap 13 and it held until a caution period set-up the amazing four-lap dash to finish.

Shaw held the middle of the track with Bowersock chasing from the high side. The two racers went side-by-side with Bowersock working sling shot momentum off the turns hoping to produce a pass before the 20 laps ended.

As the usual big crowd at Limaland Motorsports Park sat on the edge of their seats, Bowersock was finally able to sustain a defining push through the fourth and final turn of the last lap. He edged Shaw at the finish line in classic nose-to-nose racing fashion. “I didn’t think he was going to give me enough room, but he did,” recalled the Wapakoneta driver in the winner’s circle. “I feel pretty good and hope we have come out of our bad luck.” It was Jerry Bowersock’s first win of 2012 and the fifth of his career at the track.

The Elwer Fence Sprints 25-lap finale was as exciting as the Modifieds, although without the dramatic finish. At the line through the first lap, Shawn Dancer topped a hard charging field of sprinters with Randy Hannagan and Jared Horstman on his tail. On lap six, Hannagan was able to pass Dancer, with Horstman still very much in the mix.

The race saw a yellow flag in the air on three occasions through the next four laps resulting in Butch Schroeder and Jarrod Delong being put out of the competition with car troubles.
After a restart on lap 10, Hannagan and Dancer resumed their thrilling battle. Dancer took the point position with an outside pass on lap 12 while Hannagan retook the lead on lap 13. From there, Hannagan masterfully negotiated lapped traffic and held off Dancer and eventual race runner-up Jared Horstman to capture his second feature win of the season and fourth of his career at the track.

“It was a good run,” said the Californian. “The track dried out a lot more than I thought it might, so I had to really get up on the wheel pretty hard. Shawn Dancer did a really good job. He surprised me on the restart when he drove right around me. I knew at that point I had to get in gear, so I got off the bottom a bit, stayed patient and it was all good.”

The Budweiser Thunderstocks 15-lap feature was controlled by Lima’s Jeff Koz as he won the race from the pole and led every lap. The triumph was impressive in that he had to hold off Shawn Valenti, who had won the season’s previous three races and started alongside Koz in the front row.

The race saw four caution periods that helped Koz to solidify his lock on the lead and secure the eventual conquest. “The racetrack was awesome,” he said, marking the third win of his career. “I held my lane on the bottom where it was working tonight. I just tried to keep my nose clean with a good line and everything worked out for me.” Defending track champion Tony Anderson and Valenti followed Koz across the finish line.

Limaland Motorsports Park returns to action on Friday, May 25, for the Memorial Cup as the Engine Pro NRA Sprint Invaders battle with the Sprints on Dirt for $2,000 to win. The K & N UMP Modifieds and Budweiser Thunderstocks will also compete. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. with hot laps beginning at 6:30 p.m. Racing starts promptly at 7:30 p.m.

STEWART, OHIO-A beautiful spring night and 90 cars in five classes entertained the large crowd at Billy Jarrell’s Skyline Speedway Friday night where rookie Ryan Broughton, Chillicothe, Ohio area driver claimed the tantalizing twenty-five lap Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association (OVSCA) 410 sprint car main. K-C Burdette, Parkersburg, WV became the second straight GM Crate Engine to win a Super Late model win in the Tru-Tech AMRA Late Models, while veteran Doug Henry, Beverly, OH grabbed the Malta Windows AMRA Modified main, Burdette took the Semi Late main, and Cole Mayle won the Mike’s Auto Body mini-wedge main.

Just like last week young Ryan Broughton jumped into the early lead in the OVSCA main. Broughton vaulted into the initial lead over veteran Jimmy Nier of Piketon, OH. On the third lap Jeff Conrad slammed the third turn wall, but was uninjured. Broughton, who led over half the race last week, went green-to-checkered this week for the huge win over a veteran field.
At the ten lap mark, Nathan Skaggs, another up-and-coming driver, put a slide job on Nier for third. That came five laps after Dave Dickson grabbed second from Nier in a drag race into turn one.
Unlike last week when the master Danny Smith played a game of cat-and-mouse with Broughton, the young terror showed much poise in working the traffic and charging on to the win. Dickson won a tight battle for second over Skaggs, while Jimmy Stinson and Aaron Higgins worked their way into the top five .
Up from the mini-sprints, the twenty-year old charger and son of former chauffeur Tony Broughton was elated in victory lane after his first ever 410 win.
“We are learning each time out and we are pretty good on these slick tracks,” said Broughton. “It means so much to get this win, especially for my Dad–he makes this car work. Sometimes we are out to lunch on the tacky tracks, but tonight this was my kind of racing. Thanks to everyone who made this win possible.”
Broughton’s George Fisher GF-1 Chassis/ HG Fisher powered 22 was the class of the field, lapping cars into the top ten and winning by nearly a half track.
Behind Broughton and rounding out the top ten were Dickson, Nathan Skaggs, Aaron Higgins, Jimmy Stinson, Jimmy Nier, Wayne McPeek, Brian Benson, Josh Davis, and Eric Martin.
The hard charger was Wayne McPeek in a 13th to 6th place run.
K-C Burdette led nearly every lap officially in a torrid 6 minute and 59-second flag-to-flag win over defending champion Chris Garnes. Spinning a web of deceit and stealth-like precision, Garnes baited Burdette for a shot at the victory.
Burdette’s Rayburn chassis/GM Crate Engine powered Burdette Construction -Milhone Motorsports KC 44 actually fell to second to Garnes on the turn one entry, but a lap later, Burdette –with sparks flying off the back chute wall– recovered to again reclaim the lead with two laps to go. Garnes made another run but fell short by a car length at the finish.

“We worked on the car all night long to make it better and had it where we wanted by feature time,” said a happy Burdette. “I knew I had a pretty good lead , then Chris (Garnes) closed the gap pretty quick in traffic. I knew when he got up there that I had to tighten it down and run my own race.”
The AMRA Late Model racing at Skyline continues to be a who’s-who of stock car racing. Also, having great runs were former champ Jason Montgomery, Colten Burdette, and the Carpenter boys. Champions from around the area and former Skyline champs flanked the top ten of Burdette, Garnes, Jason Montgomery, Colten Burdette, Chris Carpenter, Tyler Carpenter, Ralph Withem, Nick Dohm, Freddie Carpenter, and Andy Bond. The hard charger was Ronnie Mayle in a 15th to 11th run.

In the drama-filled AMRA Malta Windows Modified main, wheelman Shawn Donahue , the first heat winner, took the initial lead for four laps, then went three wide with Roy Roush and Doug Henry. The three-way battle continued with Roush leading laps five through seven, when Henry took over and charged on to victory.

Late in the race 3-time winner Jeremy Berwanger and Tyler Carpenter charged to the front, then duelled to the finish. Berwanger finally anchored down the position. Henry’s Swartz chassis-Henry powered Chevrolet blasted on to the popular victory. Roush settled for fourth and Donahue fifth as both consistently posted fast lap times.

The top ten were Henry, Berwanger, Tyler Carpenter, Roush, Shawn Donahue, Jeremy Blake, Dusty Boley, Andy Bond, Ryan Stoops, and Mike McPherson. The hard charger of the race was Blake in a 16th to 6th place run.

“The key to the win was my crew just working their butts off on this car. We changed about everything on this car but the kitchen sink,” laughed Henry. “But tonight it really come to life.”

Delbert Bub Crum took the lead in the steel block semi-late , but quickly was reeled in by Frankie Hall, who held off double-duty KC Burdette and Crum for most of the race. Hall survived a late race caution for hard charging Jason Gillian who slammed the front stretch wall. Then out of the blue KC Burdette hit turbo charge and blasted past hall on the 17th circuit and on to the win.

Behind the winning Burdette were Hall, Bub Crum, T.J. Roush, Brian Daniels, Joe Bowie, Doug Wriston, Chris Parks, Jason Gillian, and Pete Crum. The hard charger was Joe Bowie in a 11th to 6th place run.

Picking up where he left off last year, Cole Mayle picked up the Mike’s Auto Body Mini-Wedge main. The top runners were Cole Mayle, Skylar Zimmerman, Austin Washburn, Madison Martin, Samantha Roush, Martin Gibson, Jr., Coleman Evans, Curstin Giffin, and Tanner Martin.

Skyline will host another big show next Friday, May 25. For more information please visit << www.skylinespeedway.net >> or call 304-539-4410 or the track phone at 740-662-4111.

Conneaut, OH, May 18, 2012: On a beautiful warm spring night Brandon Blackshear extended his winning streak at Raceway 7 to three in a row in the brand new Economod class. Chad Wright, a high school senior, drove into the Evergreen Lake Park Campground Victory Lane for the second week in a row as Joel Watson also got his second consecutive win in the Zimmer Service Center E-Mods. Bud Sergeff got his second win of the season in the Specialty Products Mini Stocks, also winning opening night. Paul Schreckengost won his first Raceway 7 feature of the year in the Street Stock class.

The Street Stocks were first up for feature racing with outside front row starter Paul Schreckengost taking the immediate lead over Art Edwards. Tommy Fox grabbed second at lap five. By halfway Schreckengost had a half straight-a-way lead over Fox with Chris Withers third. Schreckengost went on to the win in the caution-free event over Fox, Withers, Rush Firestone, and Edwards.

Jace Ferringer took off to the early lead in the Economods feature over two-time winner Brandon Blackshear, the pole-sitter. Caution flew at lap four when Jeremy Double got into the turn two wall. After the restart Blackshear took just one lap to get back by Ferringer. At eight laps complete caution was again shown when Amanda Stiffler spun in turn two. After two more cautions for minor spins Blackshear went on to his third victory in a row over Eric Paulus, Ferringer, Jodi Woodworth Sr, and Steve Samuelson.

After picking up his first-ever Raceway 7 feature win last week Chad Wright drew the pole position for the Evergreen Lake Park Campground FASTRAK Late Models with Matt Latta to the outside. Wright sprung to the lead but Latta was back alongside through most of the first lap when Wright established his lead at the flagstand. By the end of four laps third-running Max Blair, defending champion, was beginning to lose some ground to the runner-up. Latta drew alongside the leader at the end of nine with caution coming out as Justin Kreider slid into the wall on turn two. On the restart Blair immediately got by Latta with Bob Craig spinning in turn two for caution two. At this restart, Latta got back to second. Blair experienced mechanical problems at the end of lap eleven and pulled to the infield. With five to go Wright had a comfortable lead over Latta with Billy Henry third, Mike Mitchell fourth and Bill Cunningham fifth. That was the finishing order as Wright, a high school senior, drove to his second consecutive win.

Point’s leader John Boyd Sr started from the pole in the Specialty Products Mini Stock feature with Brad Cole alongside. Cole grabbed the lead in turn one but Boyd had it again down the back straight. However at the end of lap one it was Cole showing the way. At the end of lap two 2010-11 Champion Jonny Boyd and opening night winner Bud Sergeff had joined the battle. After a restart at the end of lap two, Sergeff came to the lead with Jonny Boyd Jr coming to second. Sergeff went on to his second win of the young season with the younger Boyd second, Cole third, Tim Gillette fourth and Mitch Stocks fifth.

The final feature of the night was the Zimmer Service E-Mods with 2011 Champion Joel Watson and Kenny Zimmer on the front row. Watson took off to the early lead looking to repeat his win from last week. After a lap one caution for debris and a lap two caution for a double spin in turn one, Watson continued to lead while Rich Michael and Ken Zimmer battled for second. Zimmer firmly held the runner-up spot at lap seven over Michael with Mike Kinney and Shane Crotty rounding out the top five. After the next restart at lap nine Michael again got to second with Kinney getting by Zimmer at lap twelve. Just a lap later Kinney pulled to the infield with mechanical ails. On the next restart Zimmer got the advantage from the high side but Michael regained second a lap later. Only one more yellow slowed Watson on his way to his second consecutive win at Raceway 7 in 2012. Michael finished second with Crotty getting by Zimmer for third. Brian Douglas wound up fifth.

(Attica, OH)

Dale Blaney went where no one else wanted to go at Attica Raceway Park Friday, living up to his moniker “The Low Rider.” The Hartford , Ohio resident’s bottom line proved to be very beneficial, as he was able to avoid several early race incidents from his 12th starting spot and went on to earn his 16th career victory on Merrill Lynch/All Pro Aluminum Heads Night.

Blaney now has three wins in 2012 at Attica and is fifth on the track’s all-time win list for the O’Reilly Auto Parts 410 Sprints. But, it wasn’t easy, as he avoided the early race pitfalls and then battled Dean Jacobs and Bryan Sebetto the last half of the race before taking the lead with 10 circuits to go.

“I just stayed on the bottom… no one else was racing there so it was wide open and the car was good down there. We have been really fast all season and I’m looking forward to the big shows coming up,” said Blaney beside his Ti22 Performance #2. “The whole trick was to be patient and take what the car and traffic would give you.”

In the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Models, Rusty Schlenk battled with defending track champion Ryan Missler early, and then figured out his high line was not the best place to be and tried the bottom on a restart with 15 laps to go and steadily pulled away for his 13th career Attica win and the second of the season.

“I saw Ryan down there and when that yellow came out I made up my mind I was going to go down there and the car worked perfect. We weren’t that good early in the year, but we have it figured out now,” said Schlenk beside his Lazer Chassis, Micro-Armor Lubricants, Main & Company, Zeller Automotive, Kercher Engines backed machine.

In the Fremont Fence 305 Sprints, Caleb Griffith refused to go to the bottom and would ride the track’s outer rim to lead all 25 laps, holding off a charging D.J. Foos, to score his third career win at Attica Raceway Park .

“The car was very good every where tonight. This one is for my crew chief Vic…he celebrated his birthday this week and he gave me the present of a great car tonight,” said Griffith beside his Tackle Box 2, Young’s Breading and Batter Mix, McDonalds Restaurant, Al Davis Carpet and Laminate, JLH General Contractors backed #40.

FAST 410 Sprints – Dale Blaney #2

In the 410 sprint 30-lap feature, Brian Lay and Dean Jacobs would lead the field to the green, but several cars made contact in turn one, sending Lee Jacobs upside down. On the restart Dean Jacobs would power into the lead over Lay, Bryan Sebetto, Phil Gressman, Byron Reed, Andrew Palker and Brad Bowman. By the second lap, Sebetto and Dean Jacobs were running nose to tail with Gressman staying within striking distance while Lay, Reed, Bowman, Palker, Craig Mintz and Blaney battled hard for fourth. Marty Perovich would get upside down in turn four on lap three to stop the action.

On the restart, Dean Jacobs, Sebetto and Gressman continued to wage a torrid battle for the top spot with Lay, Reed and a very quick Blaney in tow. When Duane Zablocki spun on lap eight, the crowd was now paying attention to Blaney who had climbed to fifth. On the restart, however, now all eyes were on Brandon Martin who had climbed to seventh from his 18th starting spot.

Jacobs and Sebetto would continue to run nose to tail, pulling away from Gressman who had his hands full with Blaney and Reed. Blaney would drive under Gressman for third on lap 13 and quickly closed on the front duo. At the half way point, Dean Jacobs still led over Sebetto, Blaney, Gressman, Reed, Mintz, Lay, 14th starter Danny Smith and Bowman. Blaney would drive under Sebetto and beside Dean Jacobs on lap 19 and would take the lead a circuit later.

Blaney would then hit lapped traffic and would pull away as no one else seemed to want to run the bottom groove. Meanwhile Dean Jacobs and Sebetto raced hard for second with Reed, Gressman, Mintz and Smith in tow. With five laps to go, Sebetto would race inside of Dean Jacobs for second and take the runner-up spot with four laps to go. However, no one was going to catch Blaney as he drove to the win over Sebetto, Dean Jacobs, Reed and Mintz.

With is second place run, Sebetto would maintain his lead in the Kistler Racing Products Fremont Attica Sprint Title (FAST) Championship Series, which he took the title in last season.

Summit UMP Late Models – Rusty Schlenk #91

John Bores and Justin Chance would bring the UMP late models to the green to start the 25 laps feature, but a caution on the start for a Cody Scott spin would necessitate a complete restart. When the green came out, Chance would rocket into the lead over third starter Schlenk with Ryan Missler, John Bores, Mike Bores and John Mayes Jr. in tow. Schlenk would driver around Chance for the lead on lap two as Chance spun in turn four, collecting Mike Bores. Schlenk would bang up against the outside cushion on the restart as Missler raced to his inside. That tandem would battle side by side over the next few laps until Missler grabbed the lead on lap 8, with Schlenk regaining the top spot a lap later as they continued to race side by side.

Meanwhile there was a tremendous battle for third involving John Bores, Larry Kingseed, Mayes, Casey Noonan, Jeff Babcock, John Henry and Troy Catterene. Catterene would spin on lap 10, collecting Henry. This time on the restart Schlenk decided on the bottom groove and it worked to perfection as he steadily pulled away. Missler would then battle with Babcock the remainder of the race. Schlenk wouldn’t catch the back of the field until he took the white flag, but he was able to maintain his lead and the win over Missler, Babcock, Kingseed and John Bores.

FAST 305 Sprints – Caleb Griffith #40

Jason Keckler and Griffith would pace the field at the start of the 305 sprint main with Griffith using the high line to immediately take the lead. Griffith built a sizeable lead with all eyes on the battle for second between Keckler, Dustin Stroup, D.J. Foos, John Ivy, Steve Rando, Paige Polyak and Nate Dussel. Foos would grab third on lap eight and second by lap 10 and began closing on Griffith .

A spat of cautions on laps 12 and 13 slowed the race pace, with first Dustin Dinan spinning, then a Steve Rando tip-over on the ensuing restart, followed a lap later by a Dustin Stroup spin after contact with Polyak. When the green came back out, Dussel would grab third from Keckler as Griffith pulled away from Foos. Keckler would rebound to regain the third spot on lap 15 with Polyak taking fourth a lap later.

Griffith hit lapped traffic with about five laps to go, allowing Foos to close ever so slightly. But, it was too little too late as Griffith drove to the checkers. Foos, Paul Weaver (from 14th), Keckler and Dussel would round out the top five.

It was also the first race of the FAST Championship Series for the 305 sprints.

Attica Raceway Park will be silent next week in preparation for the June 1st appearance of the World of Outlaw Sprint cars. For reserve seat information and more go to www.atticaracewaypark.com

It was Fan Appreciation Night at the ¼ mile bullring of McCown’s Jackson County Speedway, with one of the largest attendance records to date since owner Brad McCown revived the speedway last year. Jamey Adams won the 4th Annual Dan Reno Memorial for Street Stocks, Kenny Johnson won the time limit shortened Modified division, Gary Griffith remains perfect in the Mod Lite division, Todd Ervin picked up another win in the Outlaw 4 division and Sammie Moore picked up her first ever feature win in the Mini Wedge division.

In the first visit to McCown’s Jackson County Speedway, the 4th Annual Dan Reno Memorial saw 20 entries vie for the cool $1,022 winner’s share of the purse. Jamey Adams and Ed Leasure would pace the field of the 22 lap A Main. Adams would quickly jump out to the lead with Leasure in tow. Lap after lap, Leasure would hound Adams for the lead, constantly applying pressure waiting to take advantage of the slightest Adams mistake. While the leaders were going at it like a heavy weight boxing match, Brandon Thompson would begin to pick cars off, climbing his way through the field. Thompson would be 8th from his 15th starting spot by lap 10, at which point he would hit the cream of crop in Ohio Valley street stock racing. Adams would put his veteran experience to use, driving a perfect race in route to yet another Dan Reno Memorial victory. Thompson would earn hard charger award advancing 8 positions to 7th. Rounding out the field behind Adams would be Ed Leasure, Jim Helterbran, John Powell Jr, Davey Akers, Bruce Gray Jr, Brandon Thompson, Brandon Mather, Rob Foraker, Mike Brust, Lee Neil, Kurtis Dunaway, Dave Landman, Bob Daugherty, Jeremy Hudnall, Matt Yates, Glen Underwood, Brandon Allen and Steve Noble.

The Coyote Race Cars AMRA modifieds had 22 cars sign in for the last tune up before the 2nd Annual Modified Mayhem 40 paying $3,000 to the winner. Kenny Johnson and Brian Whiteman brought the field to the green flag. The first of many cautions flew on the initial lap as long time veteran driver Jim Wilson got crossed up, collecting several drivers. All drivers would be able to continue. After a few more cautions, a red flag would be thrown on lap 7 as a chain reaction restart would collect several drivers and end the event for 6 drivers. After the red flag lifted, the time limit had been severely exceeded but track officials were hoping for some green flag laps and decided on a 5 lap race to the finish. That race to the finish lasted 2.5 laps as a car would spin in turn 2 ending the race. The shortened race was won by Kenny Johnson. By virtue of attrition, 21st starting Brad Dickson, the only Hot Mod to show up for their scheduled race, would earn the hard charger award by advancing 14 positions to 7th. Rounding out the top ten behind Johnson was Brian Whiteman, Bob Crace Jr, Donnie Stewart, Kurt Stacy, Jason Cottrill, Brad Dickson, JP Roberts Jr, Glen Keaton Jr and Allen Dunaway.

In the Reno & Son Lawncare Mod Lite division it was all Gary Griffith all the time, as Griffith would lead flag to flag. Griffith would have a minor challenge towards the end of the race as hard charger award winner Jeff Surber would come on late in the race. Surber would advance from his 6th starting position to 2nd to earn hard charger honors. Griffith would earn his third consecutive race. Rounding out the field behind Griffith was Jeff Surber, Dylan Rittenhouse, Joe Rogers Jr, Troy Lightner, Jason Koenig, Bill Thorla and Rodney Cossin.

In the AdverTax Outlaw 4 feature, Todd Ervin would take the early lead as the Pole Sitter Steve Cruse would cause the first caution of the race on lap 1. Cruse would begin to make his way back up to the front and would be second by lap 4. A lap six caution would bunch the field together and would begin another great battle between Ervin and Cruse. On this night Todd Ervin would best Cruse winning yet another feature in the Outlaw 4 division. Jamie Baker would earn hard charger honors advancing from his 4th position from his 6th starting spot. Rounding out the field behind Ervin would be Steve Cruse, Randy Baker, Jamie Baker, Joey Johnson, Eddy Gomer, Keith Elliott, Katie Thornsberry, Charles Mullins, Stevie Thornsberry and Virgil Francis Jr.

McCown’s Jackson County Speedway returns to action next Friday May 25th with the 2nd Annual Modified Mayhem 40 paying $3,000 to the winner. Also on the card will be Steel Block Late Models, Street Stocks and Outlaw 4’s. For more information regarding the speedway point your browsers to www.jacksoncospeedway.com. Also, due to a matter beyond the control of owner Brad McCown, the race scheduled for June 15th has been canceled.
