With Wayne County Speedway celebrating it’s 50th season, there have been memorable feature finishes, but many that have been around the track for a lot of those years, said last nights Fisher Performance Sprint feature may have been the best ever on Bechtel Services Night. The ‘Wild Child’ Jac Haudenschild would start on the pole with nephew and 3 time winner Brad Haudenschild flanked to his right. The feature would get off to a slow start as Jason Dolick would spin in turn two right after the drop of the green and then Troy Kingan, who had rolled over in the heat race spun out on lap four and then two laps later, Dolick would spin again. this time collecting Nick Patterson and ending Patterson’s night. On the restart, Mitch Harble, who was in the George Prosser #19 machine, would lose the left rear tire but was able to replace it and continue on. In those couple of green flag laps run everyone knew that it was going to be a two car battle between the Haudenschild’s. With the extended green flag action, Jac would build up a sizable lead with Brad in pursuit as Danny Mumaw ran third. A final caution for a spinning Clay Riney with four laps to go would set up a dash to the checkered flag. As the green reappeared, Brad made a move to the inside of the ‘Wild Child’ in turn one but could not wrestle the lead away as the fans went to their feet. The younger Haudenschild would roar down the back stretch and took to the high side of turns three and four and be on Jac’s bumper and this time Jac would take the low line into turn one and opened the highside of turns one and two for Brad and his Kempthorn Auto Mall, Fire & Ice Pub and J&J Racing ‪#‎38k‬ and as they came out of turn two, Brad edged past his Uncle for the lead. Jac would try to do a slide job to regain the lead but came up short on the last lap. It would be Brad’s 4th win of the season and expand his points lead. The two Wooster drivers would park on the front stretch after the race as the crowd gave them a standing ovation. Mumaw would finish third with Shawn Hubler and Jimmy Colvin rounded out the top five. Heat winners were Mumaw and Brad Haudenschild.
Matt Irey and Ryan Markham would lead the field of Lias Tire Super Late Models to the green flag with Irey getting a little too sideways in turn two and before he gathered himself back up, Markham, heat winner Doug Drown and Brad Malcuit motored by. Three caution flags on the next three laps, one each for Ricky Holderbaum, Coy Hornikel and Jerry Aber, would keep the field bunched up. Much Like the Sprint feature, a long run of green flag laps would ensue and this would shape up to be a battle between Markham and Drown as Malcuit and Irey would duel for third. Drown would stay right in Markham’s tire tracks but could never make a strong challenge to swipe the lead away from Markham. Going into turn one on lap 22, Drown would bounce off the guardrail and Malcuit slipped by as Markham now had some breathing room. Drown quickly gathered himself back together to reclaim second on the next circuit. With the white flag waving, Markham, who was loking for his 1st Super Late Model win, would go into turn one where disaster would strike as the right front tie rod broke on Markham’s ‪#‎5m‬, sending him in a half spin and slowing him down which allowed Drown and his Hall’s Auto Sales, Kar Connection and Wooster Glass #240 to power past for his fifth win at WCS and also build his points lead even more. Malcuit would get a season best second place finish while Irey ended up third, his third straight top five finish. Markham finished fourth as Jerry Aber was scored fifth.
The Harriger Towing Rush Late Model main would see Lexington’s Justin Chance start on the pole with Jim Nicely along side but it was Ryan Markham quickly grabbing second and for the 20 laps, Chance and Markham would never be more than a car length apart. It would be the cleanest feature of the night as the only caution would come out on lap four when points leader Charlie Duncan did an uncharacteristic spin. Markham would try every line he could on heat winner Chance but could never take the point. Behind the two race leaders, a four car battle for third between Paul Harriger, Jamie Wrightsman, Nicely and 1st time visitor Wendell Pinckney was in progress as they were changing spots all race long. As they crossed the finish line, Chance and his State Farm Insurance, Accu-Force Shocks and Innovative Graphics #01 had a half car advantage over Markham for his first WCS win. Wrightsman would pass Pinckney with five laps to go for a season best third with Harriger getting his first top five finish.
Caution flags marred the early laps of the Aamco Transmissions Super Stock feature as sixth starting and four time winner Nick Smith blasted into the lead on the opening lap. Tyler Thompson would power his way into second on lap two from his fifth starting spot. After a third caution on lap three, Thompson and his Streetsboro based, Action Auto Body, Fisher Performance and Nella Enterprises ‪#‎t2‬ checked out on the field as he won his 1st feature at WCS by more than a straightaway over Smith. Pole sitter Cliff Staley finished a season best third as Tyler Nicely edged past Gary Hensel Jr. for fourth and his best finish of the season. Paul McVicker and Smith won the heat races.
It took Shreve’s Michael Workman half the race to get to the front of the WQKT Mini Stock feature from his eighth starting spot and then spent the last half of the race keeping Doug Hensel from winning his fifth feature of the season. Aboard the JD Empire Trucking and S M Motorsports ‪#‎41w‬, Workman would post his third win of the season. Trae Shoenauer would take home a third place in his first visit to WCS with Stephen Crowe and Jeff Edwards filling out the top five. Workman and Hensel topped the heats. The red flag came out for Mitch Reichard who barrel rolled in turn three on lap seven but drove away and continued and finished ninth.
Fredricksburg’s Logan Duncan squeezed past points leader Billy Dawson on lap five to park the El Campensino Restaurant, Scanlon Enterprises and Green Leaf Restaurant #015 Mini Wedge in victory circle for the first time this season. Dawson, who won the heat race finished second with Matthew Moore and Jolene Voshel following.
It seems like there is no stopping Scott Delaney in the Flat Track Carts as he won his fifth feature this year driving the third different Cart. Jamie Johnson and Chuck Conway went back and forth for second with Johnson winning that battle. Brett Bee and Colton Shaw rounded out the top five. Conway and Delaney were the heat winners.
Contingency Connection awards totaling near $100,000 for the season were once again up for grabs for the drivers as they are each week at Wayne County Speedway.
Next Saturday night, August 1, will be Kid’s Night with a lot of prizes for the Kid’s along with Lowe’s Kid’s Clinic night, Bounce Houses and Mar’s Trucking $1 Dog Night for everyone. On track action will have all the class’ back in action as the Points Races start to wind down for 2015.
