Trimble Takes Elkins Mod Special With 5th Win

6 min read

(Kerens, W.V. 06-12-15) Mother Nature couldn’t score the win this week at the Elkins Raceway. As a black cloud slowly approached the track, and caused a 12 minute delay, but she couldn’t take the win. One of the biggest crowds and the biggest car count of the year gave way to exciting racing. With the added attraction of Mountaineer Insurance presenting ‘out of school’ bicycle races for the kids. Including a pair of Cobra 23 mile coverage walkie talkies for first place in all three classes.
Gold ‘N Guns Pawn Shop of Belington presented the Performance Motors Modified special Friday night. Brent Trimble, Jesse Rupe, (in his first ever visit), and Randy Bohan snared the prelims. On the second try at green, Trimble out dragged Rupe to turn one. Bohan, Dave Defibaugh and James Nelson filled in the rest of the top five. On lap three a light drizzle began, as the yellow came out. But it was over quickly. On the restart, Bob Williams slammed the guard rail coming out of turn four. The race returned to green with Rupe trying to close the gap on Trimble, as Defibaugh moved to third by lap six. The last stoppage came on lap nine, as that bunched the field back up. When the green came back out, the “Hillbilly Hustler” was able to fend off Rupe for the $750 first prize. It was the H & R Block / B B & T Auto Crushers ‪#‎1B‬ fifth trip to victory lane this season. Rupe crossed the stripe in second, Defibaugh was third. Phill Jeffries and Bohan were fourth and fifth.
Shane Hitt and Bob Gordon took heat wins in the Jenkins Ford Super Late Models. Hitt jumped to the point quickly with Gordon, Dusty Hamrick, Gary Dalton and Steve Wilmoth in tow. Hamrick motored by Gordon by lap five and set his sites on Hitt. Wilmoth also moved closer to the front by taking third on lap six. Hitt was still in command when a yellow for Shaun Poling fell on lap 12. Hamrick was now on Hitt’s decklid and would not let him get too far. Hamrick turned up the heat the final five circuits, but Hitt turned him away. It was the Jenkins Ford / Odyssey Rehabilitation #5* first ever win in the Super Late Models. Hamrick was a close second, Tim Senic (from seventh) was third, Steve Wilmoth, was fourth, and Cody Hardesty (from eighth) was fifth.
There were new faces at the front of the FASTRAK finale Friday night. As the field roared to green, Kris Southern, Greg Hicks and Troy Frazier grabbed the first three spots. Jamie McCloud, and Daniel Hill filled in the top five. Southern set a torrid pace as the first caution waved on lap five, when Frazier slipped off the racing surface in turn two. The yellow again appeared on lap 11, then again on the restart for a three car pileup. That would take out Kyle Thomas, C J Johnson and A J Spagnuolo. Southern driving the W.V. Fan Zone / UFCW Local 400 ‪#‎K2‬ scored his first win of the season. Hicks would came across in second. Hill was third, Derek Rogers (from eighth) was fourth. And Garrett Paugh (from eleventh) was fifth.
Chad Judy and Bryan Mitchell were putting on a whale of a battle for the lead in the West Virginia Pools Street Stocks. Judy held the slightest of advantage, but Mitchell was within striking distance the entire first half of the race. But, visions of a first career win for Judy vanished on lap 11. Just as Judy went under the flag stand the left rear wheel broke off ending his evening. Mitchell would inherit the lead and would drive on to place his ‪#‎M1‬ Wizard Race Cars / Performance Engineering sponsored ride in victory circle for the second time this season. Second place finisher Scott Bittinger was disqualified due to weight issues. That moved Brad Harris to second. Josh Rovello in his best ever run was third. John Tallman Jr., and Anthony Arbogast were fourth and fifth.
In the Miller’s Used Cars Mod Lites, Mitch Ward in his Ward Welding & Fabrication / E & S Contracting #862 collected his second first place check of the year. Beau Newlon, John Cogar, Ryan Harris and Logan Hitt would complete the top five.
Every week the B C T Construction Mini Wedges put on a great show. Battling two, three and even four wide for the lead. When the checkered flag flew this week, Abby Watson piloting the John Watson Trucking / High Lines Escorting Services #93 added her third first place trophy in 2015. Garrett Jones, Mitch Thomas, Paije Bragg, and Braydon Beachler completed the top five.
In the “B” group, Blake Runyon in his Civil Environmental / TKS Construction #20 collected his fourth trophy as he bested, Pressley Wilt, Abbie Hudler – Pennington, Kelsey Tincher and Madison Taylor.
