McGill Wins Fall Festival 52 At Elkins
After a 2 week delay because of rain, Elkins Raceway finished off its 2011 season with its first Fall Festival 52 sponsored by Budweiser for the Woodford Oil Late Models, and extra-purse racing in all other classes. Eleven preliminary events were held to set the line-ups for all the features.
Daniel Hill—in his first Super Late Model event at Elkins—and Bob Gordon led the field to the green; Gordon took the lead through the first caution at lap 10, with Rick Williams and Butch McGill following. Both Williams and McGill got around Gordon on lap 21; Gordon exited the event the next lap, with Williams inheriting the lead. Williams encountered a problem ten laps later, and pulled out, leaving the lead and eventual win to McGill. Side-by-side racing farther back in the pack involving Steve Wilmoth, Travis Brookover, Duane Moreland, and Kenny Newhouse entertained the crowd as McGill went unchallenged for his seventh win at Elkins Raceway on the season. New track champion Tim Senic threaded his way through the traffic from his 9th starting position to finish second; Hill ran a steady race to finish 3rd; Wilmoth and Brookover rounded out the top 5. Moreland finished 6th in the Tommy Pennington –owned #37, followed by Newhouse, Richard Frazier, Skip Hare, and Len Dobrieselski. Hill, Gordon, and Frazier won the heats.
A season-high 22 Valley Supply FASTRAKs filled the pits for their final W. Va. event of the season. Shawn Jett, Kyle Thomas, and Jeff Fornash won the heats, and paced the field to the start of their 25-lap main. Thomas took off and led every lap for his first Elkins Raceway feature win and the $1000 top prize, over Jett, Derek Rogers, Louie Krushansky, and Cory Matheny. For Matheny, it was his best ever finish. Krushansky, the 2011 Elkins modified champ, was competing in the Pro-late class for the first time. Fornash, Shane Hitt, Chad Green, new champ Kris Southern, and Jeff Lilly finished in the top 10.
A nice field of 13 Miller’s Used Cars AMRA E-Mods took the green for a 20-lap main paying $1000; Coolville OH invader Darin Roush and 4-time track champ Dave Defibaugh won the heats, and Defibaugh led the distance for his 4th win in 6 tries at Elkins. Brent Trimble finished 2nd, and was closing in on the leader before running out of laps. Mike Murphy started last in the feature and came to 3rd, with Ohio Valley Speedway champ Jeremy Blake and Roush rounding out the top 5.
Another season-high count, 19 Street Stocks, ventured out on the windy evening for a 15-lap/$600 to win season final. Ricky Vest, Todd Dennis, and Dusty Swecker each won a prelim to earn front starting spots. Dennis took the lead at the green, followed by Vest and Jim Byers. The event was slowed several times for minor mishaps; Dennis led until coming out of turn 4 for the checker when Ryan Newman got underneath the leader and beat Dennis to the flag for his first-ever Elkins win. Jim Byers, Dustin Isner, and C. J. McLean were the rest of the top 5. Three-time MWRA champ—including 2011–James Nelson made his debut in the “Big Kid’s” class, and finished 14th after overheating problems. Four drivers—Dusty Swecker, Tom Newman, Kenny Vest, and Car 86 were unable to start the feature.
The annual Awards Dinner will be held Saturday, October 29, at the Beverly Fire Hall; the deadline for ticket reservations is October 22. Also, it was announced that the current raceway management will be in place for the 2012 season; track maintenance and upgrades have already began and will be completed within a few weeks. Stay tuned too our current website at www.elkinsraceway.net for announcements and schedule updates.
