Hawkins Outguns Outlaws, Keeps Diamond Money Home!
(Middlebourne, W.V. 9-4-11) The second annual Black Diamond 125 weekend reaches new luster! Nearly 250 competitors invaded the bullring over the three day Labor Day event. The recently constructed VIP skybox greeted sponsors over the weekend with more work and an expansion being planned over the off season.
Day one; Black Lightning Thursday kicked the activities off with the Bridgeport Equipment & Tool TSMA Modifieds. Jess Hartman, Mike Smith, Brent Trimble and Corey Conley scored the heat victories. Tanner Wilosn took the consey. Hartman blasted the lead followed by Trimble, Travis Dickson, Conley and Joe Hamon. Dickson and Trimble started to battle for the second spot just as Conley began to apply heavy pressure on them. Conley zipped by the duo, and set sail for Hartman. On lap seven Conley made a successful bid for lead and would never relinquish it. Conley parked the Wellsburg Auto City, Jones Oil #14 in victory circle. Jacob Hawkins would climb from sixth to second. Hartman, Trimble and Shaun Davis rounded out the top five.
The Herrrington – Yoak Ford / Pre Owned Auto Mod Lites held the first of a four race STARS Mod Lite sanctioned slate. Tyler County and Deerfield Raceway were offering bonus money for points over the four events. After Matt Hay, Brandon Fluharty, Beau Newlon, and Brian Miller collected prelim honors and James Watson advanced by taking the consey. Watson then started on the tail and methodically worked his way to the front. Watson took over in the closing circuits and drove away for the win. Watson, driving for Steve Weekley had planned on racing his Late Model but mechanical problems left him open for the substitute drive. Mike Hay, Matt Hay, James Hill, and Newlon filled out the top five.
The Sigler Fabrication Hot Mods ran their heat races on Thursday. In his first outing in his new car, Brian Probst won the first heat. Travis Thomas and Todd Chicklo snagged the other two prelims.
Dennis Adkins shot from his outside pole starting slot to the front and drove away and hid for the Wells Inn / Champion Sport Card & Trophies Eco Flyer 4 Cylinders.
Josh Fulks, Bill Doll, David Bunnell, and Zack Jones followed him across the stripe.
The Outlaw Graphic and Automotive Services MWRA Mini Wedges were also on the card. In the first feature Trey Watson vested Logan Hitt, Alec Frazier, Wesley Baker, Brandon Weigle, and Coltan Perine. In the second feature Levi Nolan crossed ahead of Jacob Ice, Caleb Nolan, Hayden Jacobs, and Jackson Jacobs. Trophies were sponsored by Donnie Nething.
Day two; United Rentals Black Gold Friday: The Dodd’s Sporting Goods Late Models made their first racing appearance (they practiced Thursday night) as the UFo Championship series sanctioned the Area 51 for $8,000 to win. Tim Dohm, Jonathon Davenport, Keith Barbara, Tim Senic, Gregg Satterlee, Shane Clanton, Darrell Lanigan and Jared Hawkins collected the heat wins. Tim McCreadie, Dan Stone and Davey Johnson snared the conseys. On the third attempt at green a lap was finally counted with Davenport out front, Tim Dohm, Hawkins, Satterlee and Lanigan in tow. Hawkins began to apply heavy pressure to Davenport by using the high line. On lap six the front duo were side by side. The heat was turned up when Dohm joined in as the now trio were three wide. Dohm secured the spot on lap eleven, only to have Hawkins steal it away on the next go round. The top five after a yellow for debris on lap 13 were Hawkins, Dohm, Lanigan, Davenport and Satterlee. Satterlee moved to fourth on lap 18. With Hawkins showing the way, Dohm, Lanigan, Satterlee, and Senic were now in the top five. Another debris caution stopped action on lap 22. On the restart Lanigan motored to second. Clanton had spun on the second try to start the race charged back to fifth by by lap 24. Hawkins began to check out from the field driving in his own zip code. Satterlee was charged with the next yellow on lap 43 as he and another car made contact resulting in Satterlee setting in turn two. While under yellow davenport called it quits for the night. Hawkins resumed his domination with Lanigan a distant second followed by Dohm, Clanton and Senic. On the restart McCreadie moved into the top five. When the checkers fell Hawkins comfortably drove the Bobby Lake Motorsports / J C Distributing to his
biggest career checkerboard. Lanigan, McCreadie, Clanton and Dohm filled out the top five.
The United Rental Industrial Division FASTRAK’s were also on the lineup as the $3,000 to win 30 lapper was co – sanctioned by the Northeast Touring Series and the Mid Ohio Valley Region. Max Blair, Kyle Thomas, Dan Angelicchio and Kris Southern won the heat races. Jeff Fornash and C J Johnson snagged the conseys. Joe Martin out dragged Doug Horton to turn one for the point. The yellow fell on lap four for Tim Dohm and Southern who collected each other in turns one and two. Martin, Horton, John Volpe, Blair and Mike Pegher were the top five. The caution returned on six for debris then again on lap nine for Fornash and Derek Rogers spin in turn four. It was unfurled again on the restart for Kirk Isner and Lester Huffman’s wreck in turn four. At the half way mark Martin was still in command with Pegher hot on his tail. Horton, K C Burdette and Angelicchio (from twelfth) were now third through fifth. The next stoppage came on the seventeenth circuit as Rogers got loose in turns one and two. On the restart Martin and Pegher began their side by side duel. A final caution waved on lap 28 setting up a shootout. Pegher got the jump and snared the lead. Martin chased him down the back shoot but could not make a bid. Pegher driving the #1 Cochran / Zero Wraps sponsored machine took the checkers. Martin had to settle for second. Blair, Angelicchio and T. Dohm (from fifteenth) completed the top five.
On the second night of the four night race for STARS Mod Lites, locally sponsored by Herrington – Yoak Ford and Pre Owned Auto, Tom Kline, Josh Baldwin, Brandon Fluharty and Mike Hay notched the prelims. Lynn Knepper took the consey. Hay rocketed to the point and would lead flag to flag for the checkers. Matt hay finished second, Baldwin, James Watson and Brian Stuhldreher filled out the top five slots.
In the Sigler Fabrication Hot Mod feature Travis Thomas would hold Burt Burge and Brian Probst at bay to score his fourth trip to victory circle. Kenny Isner and David Griffin were fourth and fifth.
The Outlaw Graphic and Automotive Services MWRA Mini Wedges started the racing Friday night as Trey Watson added his fourth first place trophy. Alec Frazier, Kaitlyn Frazier, Logan Hitt, and Brandon Weigle were second through fifth in the first feature. In the second feature Levi Nolan won his first ever at the bullring. He crossed before Jacob Ice, Josh Gump, P J Wright, Tiffany Jackson, and Caleb Nolan.
The third day for the Black Diamond weekend as the World of Outlaws sanction the 125. Of the 87 machines that signed in Saturday Mike Marlar tripped the clock with the quickest time of 13.306 The field was split into the odd and even number qualifiers. (1,3, 5..2,4,6 etc) The odd heat winners were Marlar, Tim Dohm, Pat Doar, and Shane Clanton. The even heat victors were Jacob Hawkins, Dan Stone, Josh Richards and Chris Meadows. The odd conseys were won by Clint Smith and Cody Parker. The even conseys had Corey Conley and Ricky Conley getting the checkers.
In the first 40 lap qualifier, Doar lead the field with Davey Johnson, Darrell Lanigan, Ricky Williams and Paul Wilmoth Jr., The race stayed green with Doar fending off Johnson until lap 24, when ‘the Juice’ squirted by Doar. The first yellow waved on lap 30 when Wayne Maffett slowed on the front chute. Johnson, Doar, Lanigan, Butch McGill (from ninth) and Williams were the top five. The first stage stayed green as the Double One Express of Doar pulled even with Johnson on lap 32 while Mike Marlar motored to third on the next circuit. Doar stayed glued to Johnson and made his move with five to go. Doar now was the front runner with Johnson applying pressure. Marlar caught the dueling duo, and made it three wide. The crowd were on it’s feet as they took the white flag. A yellow halted what was setting up a photo finish. White the white and green waving Doar driving the U Motors / Amsoil #11 held off Marlar at the line. Johnson finished third. McGill and Lanigan were fourth and fifth.
The second 40 lapper Steve Shaver emerged from turn two out front. A quick caution on lap four for Mark Banal who slammed the front straight wall. On the restart Jamie Lathroum and Ron Davies got together on the front chute. Shaver, Dan Stone, Josh Richards, Zach Dohm and Jacob Hawkins occupied the top five spots. Jared Hawkins who started thirteenth began to move to the front taking fifth away from his brother and pulled even with Dohm on lap 10 for fourth. On lap 15 Shaver was still at the front of the bus, while Stone and Richards were door to door behind him. Richards got second from Stone on lap 22, then Jared Hawkins passed Stone two circuits later. The race was stopped on lap 29 for Jacob Hawkins’ flat tire. The remaining circuits were clean and green as Shaver fended off Richards and Hawkins to put the G P S sponsored #6 in for the checkers. McCreadie crossed in fourth and Stone was fifth.
The top eight from each qualifier now would redraw for starting spots for the 45 lap $20K to win capper. Z. Dohm (inside) and Chub Frank would draw the front row. The Black Diamond field roared to life with Frank leading Dohm Hawkins, Marlar and Stone in to turn two. Hawkins used the high groove to move to the front in the first 40 lap segment and stayed there as he reeled in Frank and took the spot on lap four. Mike Marlar pulled up to the door of Frank on lap seven. Hawkins once again bulid a big lead as it was half track by lap nine. The green waved while Hawkins sliced through traffic. The caution came out on lap 26 when Johnson stopped in turn four. It erased the cushion Hawkins enjoyed. Hawkins, Marlar, Stone, Richards and McCreadie now were the top five. The crowd began to cross fingers and toes hoping the son of former West Virginia State Champion Mike hawkins can hold the out of towners behind him. On lap 28 Stone passed Marlar for second. With a near clear track ahead of him, Marlar stayed 0.9 to 1.3 seconds behind as the circuits clicked off. With the checkers flying in the air, Hawkins exited turn four besting his career biggest win only 24 hours before. Stone, Marlar, Richards and McCreadie completed the top five.
The Bridgeport Equipment and Tool TSMA Modifieds closed the three days of racing.
Corey Conley, Jess Hartman and Mark Dickson scored then heat victories. On the second try at green Hartman cleared the pack. Conley slipped into second, Jesse Wisecarver third, Dickson and Shaun Davis were fourth and fifth. Wisecarver blasted around Conley and reeled in Hartman quickly. On lap five Wisecarver and Hartman were door handle to door handle. The next go round had Wisecarver as the new leader. A serious of yellows on l;aps six, the restart, and lap nine slowed the 30 lap event. Dickson started to work on Hartman and made a successful attempt for the spot on lap 12. Hartman retook the position on lap 13. The race was again slowed on laps 12 and 15 with cautions. Wisecarver would never be challenged as Hartman slid high in turn four on lap 18 letting Dickson shoot by. But Hartman would be able to get back by. Wisecarver in the Caterpiller #101 took the last checkered flag of the weekend. Hartman, Dickson, Anthony Kincade, and Tanner Wilson were second through fifth.
